My own family includes Guenther, Schubel, Hornshuch. They were in Schuykill Co. until sometime in the 1870s, when the whole lot moved to Oregon and set up shop in Clackamas County. Other than what's easily found on Ancestry, I haven't chased much detail in Schuykill. I too am interested in what resources are available. The John and Johanna Hurley family is from Shenandoah and their children were born between 1840 and 1860. The father John Hurley died in 1897. There were two sons, James and Timothy. James settled in Glasco Kansas in the 1870 and died there in 1929. Timothy(Ted) married and moved to Philadelphia before 1894. He died in 1937. I don't think that I can connect this Hurley family with Joe Burns. However there are several other Hurley families in Schulykill county listed in the 1860 and 1900 censuses. In Shenandoah there is the Patrick Hurley family with several sons. There are also Hurley families in Pottsville and Blythe township. You might contact the county for a birth record of Joe Burns. I have had success getting a marriage record from this year. This sounds like a tough one, but good luck. Sometimes longs shots pay off! My Great Aunt Lydia "Sue" Baum married Robert Schucker. They lived in Hegins. He was a miner. Any possible connections? I have a picture of his draft card. I don't know much, but it could be a start. I just started researching the Baums, also. ________________________________________ From: [email protected] [[email protected]] On Behalf Of Peggy [[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2011 12:14 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PASCHUYL] Schucker family Have done some that is connected to the Wolfgang website. Hi, I am seeking information on the families of Captain Crawford Fullarton GLOVER and his brother Robert Alexander GLOVER who went from Ayrshire in Scotland to Pottsville and Shenandoah about 1858. Captain GLOVER married an Elizabeth LENHART in 1861, they had two children, Stuart M F GLOVER and Emly GLOVER. Captain GLOVER was a tobacco merchant and cigar maker in Pottsville, he died in 1893. Stuart married and had three daughters, Margaret who married John FURMAN, Miriam who married Lorenz MILLS and Irma who at the time of Stuart's death in 1930 was unmarried Stuart's sister Emly appears to have never married she was a school teacher and at the time of Stuart's death was a teacher in charge of the girls grammar school at the Garfield Building. The Captain's brother Robert is recorded in the 1880 census as living in Shenandoah, with his wife Cathrine and 10 children ranging from 4 months to 25 years. Both Robert and the eldest child are recorded as a "Travelling Agent" A brother of the Captain and Robert was my GG grandfather, he came to Australia in the gold rush and then went to the gold fields in New Zealand. They had one further brother, David, who so far as I can find in Australian and New Zealand BDM's did not marry or die here. It may be possible that he also went to Pennsylvania with or to join his brothers; it was a lot closer than Australia. Does anyone know anything of these families please? Cheers Peter Melbourne Australia
Hi, I have found a relative living in Shenandoah in the 1880 census who is recorded as a "Travelling Agent" Would this be a travelling salesman or some other job description. Cheers Peter Melbourne Australia
Hello Fellow Listers: Have you ever heard the term "Pow-Wow" or the practice of "Pow-Wowing"? Do you know what a "Pow-Wow doctor" does? Or what is done during a "Pow-Wow"? If you'd like to find out the answers to these questions or more about this practice, come to The Harry Lenig Library, home of The Perry Historians on Sunday, February 27th, 2011. 3rd Annual "On the Trail of Perry County History" hosted by The Perry Historians on Saturday, March 26, 2011. There was such a great interest shown by our "tour-goers" last year, as we toured the path of the Newport and Shermans Valley Railroad, that fellow members Harry Focht and Steve Metzger agreed to do research on and map out the route of the Perry County Railroad... which, during the same time, was in great competition with the Newport and Shermans Valley Railroad to cross Perry County. Our newest On the Trail of Perry County History Tour will follow the Perry County Railroad route from its beginning in Duncannon to its end in Landisburg. We will also be investigating several other places of historic interest, including the Millerstown area in conjunction with our African American History project which fellow member and volunteer, Janet Taylor is diligently working on. We'll be gathering at the East Parking Lot at Little Buffalo State Park (near Shoaff's Mill and the dam area) by no later than 7:45 a.m.. Bus pulls out at 8:00 a.m. sharp! All persons must be aboard a bus - NO Cars! Lunch will be served by the New Bloomfield Lutheran Church and will consist of baked chicken breast and scalloped potatoes, dessert and beverage. Deadline for reservations in March 3, 2011. Seating is limited to 47 persons and will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Wear comfortable shoes - as there may be some walking. Cost for the trip - which includes the meal is $30.00 per person. Payment must be made in the form of a check. For more information or a reservation form, please e-mail me at [email protected] The Perry Historians is a genealogical library located at 763 Dix Hill Rd., New Bloomfield, PA. 17068 - just north of New Bloomfield, Perry Co., PA. on Rt. 34. However, according to my research he had been living there since 1880. I have found a lot of information including US/England Census Records along with immigration records from the 1800's. Most of my information ties out but I am currently looking for someone to collaborate with to try to confirm my research. I know Thomas Hughes is a common name however, the location makes me think this is a possible match. My great great gandfather Thomas Hughes was born around 1859 in England. He also had a son named Thomas Hughes that was born around 1893. Do this match your research? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
