Patrick, I have no idea if any of this will help, but here goes :-) First is the information I discovered on John Parr whose family is buried at Trinity Cathedral Cemetery in Columbia, SC. Please understand that what follows is 'notes' I made and entered into my FTM; I'll try to filter out the 'personal' stuff for you. ======================================== John Parr -----Columbia, Richland Co., SC 5-6-2001: Columbia, SC. Ray and I went to Trinity Episcapal Church Cemetery . The cemetery is located at 1100 Sumter Street on the corner of Gerveis and Sumter Street across from the Capitol building. In the back of the cemetery is a very large mozelium with a front entrance and what appears to be 4 openings where caskets could be placed inside. Although there were 4 'openings' in the vault, it was large enough to house possibly 6 caskets. On the front entrance door was PARR 1847, but no names on the crypt. A few days later Ray and I went on a tour of the Cathedral and I asked our guide about the Parr vault. She said that "when the last Parr died in 1847, as ordered by the vault owner, the keys were thrown away". I later discovered that two of the occupants of this Parr vault are John Parr and his wife Mary Saylor Parr. This John Parr died in 1847* and his wife Mary died in 1848 (so the date our tour guide told us of 1847* is incorrect). *1847 is a date etched on the Parr vault in the cemetery. I have no way of knowing for sure if John Parr died in 1847 but do know that he died prior to his wife Mary's death in 1848, as she is listed as 'widow' of John Parr in the two obituaries I found for her. On our tour of Trinity Cathedral, I picked up a brochure on the cemetery. Parr Vault is shown on a map (on the brochure) as # 17 and the description states : "Parr Vault. This vault was closed after the death of the last Parr in 1847 and as requested the key was thrown away". According to our tour guide, during the Civil War, Union soldiers tried to vandalize the vault but its multi-layers and iron door prevented their succeeding. The 'iron gate' described in above brochure has apparently been removed because all the 'doors' of the vault have been concreted in and sealed. All that is etched anywhere on the vault is...Parr 1847. 6-15-2001: Ray and I went to Chesterfield, SC. During our research at the local library, we found several items relating to this John Parr and wife Mary Saylor. It is as follows: 1) "Marriages & Death Notices from Columbia, SC Newspapers 1792-1839" by Brent H Holcomb, 1982..... a)From the Telescope Newspaper.....page 31... If the info isn't useful to you, it may be to someone else :-) I'll find the other SC information and submit it tomorrow. Do let me know if any of this ties in to your family or if anyone else on the list makes a connection, do let me know. Regards, Nancy Parr
