    2. Judith Damewood
    3. I am searching for information on parents/siblings of Robert Henry Parks, who, according to his obituary, was born 17 Sep 1871 in Little Rock, Arkansas. I believe his father was B. (Benjamin?) F. Parks, who appears at age 43 in Mill Twp, Garland County, Arkansas in 1880 with wife Verzena J., 24; Antonio, age 10; Robert H., age 8; Evelyn, 8 mos, a stepdaughter. Robert died in Pocatello, Idaho 26 Jul 1951, and had a surviving brother, A.T. of Fort Worth, Texas. Robert was known to have had relatives in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas, and we have located a cemetery record for A.T. "Tony" Parks, who died 22 Nov 166, in Oakland Cemetery, Parker County, Texas. V. Jane Parks is buried in the same cemetery, and must be Verzena J. from the 1880 census. We also located (online) Benjamin F. Parks in Strouds Creek Cemetery, Hood County, Texas, with no dates recorded, but with Co. K-12 Kansas Inf. on the stone. The Civil War database shows Benjamin F. Parks, residence Mound City, Kansas, enlisting in Co. K, 12th Infantry Regiment Kansas on 30 Sep 1862 and mustering out 30 Jun 1865. The pension card file shows Benjamin filing for an invalid pension in 1891 and widow Verzena J. applying in 1917. Presumably Verzena was Benjamin's second wife. We will get the pension file at the earliest opportunity, but would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of this family. Judy Damewood

    1. [PARKS] JOHN & THOMAS PARKS
    2. Does anyone's data base have anything on John Parks who was b. 18 May 1706 in Essex Co., VA, and d. ca 1792 in Wilkes Co., NC ?? I specifically seek proof of the parentage (or some idea on it) of his mother, Sarah Miller, wife of Thomas Parks, they apparently wed ca 1705 in Albemarle Co., VA. Thomas Parks was b. 1670/1675 in Old Rappahannock, VA. I suspicion that Sarah Miller was connected to Capt. Simon Miller, but I've no proof. Any help in your data? John, son of Thomas, wed Mary Sharpe and d. ca 1792 in Wilkes Co., NC. Their daughter wed Cornelius Sale, and THEIR dtr. Mary wed Theophilus Simonton in Wilkes Co. in 1793; the latter two being my 3XGgrandparents. Thank you. Dave Ross David and Carol Ross 2771 S. 3. There are a lot of companies doing DNA testing now. And from what I have seen on the DNA-L list, there can be a lot of confusion trying to match the database from one lab to another. For example, I had my mtDNA tested in Europe and they start the base sequence at 16001 [I think, might be 16000] and put out an output of 400 characters and show where your mtDNA differs from the hub group [if it does]. Another lab [here in the states] begins the same sequence with 16100 [or 16101]. It seems to get more complex with guys [maybe] -- or at least interpreting the result does; and it seems to be more important to have a longer sequence tested. Thus, although there are a lot of labs in the business, it seemed more important to get together with a group of the same surname who were being tested. There is a Parke family being tested but I do not yet have details on where they believe their immigrant ancestor to have settled. The whole process is really rather exciting. While I fit into the Helena group of Europe, I am "off the hub" [be nice now!] and my particular derivation has been found in Syria, Azira, the Caucusus, Bulgaria, Karelia and -- well, east of the Alps [with the exception of one Swiss]. 3. I know that the Wells Family Association is doing this for some 24 lines. See: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wellsfam/dnaproje/dnaproj1.html I think they started as a test case for the BYU Molecular Genealogy Project, but now are using Relative Genetics: http://www.relativegenetics.com I haven't paid a great deal of attention to this, since my nearest male Wells ancestor died in 1761, so I was not eligible... The tests have been very helpful. They work only for males with the Cone surname. Cost has been around $140 per test, I think, using swabs of DNA from one's inner cheek. So far about two dozen Cone males have participated. Bob in Atlanta Robert S. 3. There is a DNA test available through Ancestry.com You have the choice of doing males, which proves association and one for the females but that only proves mother to mother to mother. The website (for review) is pasted below. It explains everything. http://www.ancestry.com/dna/mygg.asp Vivian

    3. I'm not a genetics expert but it is my understanding that the DNA could prove useful even if the surname is not Park/e/s. But, you would need to ask that of a testing facility. The tests are expensive, especially if you request to be tested for more sites; but with that expense comes more accuracy. There are at least 12 immigrant Park/e/s ancestors who emigrated from England and Ireland in the 1600/1700. From the FS Parks books, it seems that there is uncertainty how many of these immigrant ancestors might be related to each other - some are suspected to be. It is my understanding that if a man believes that he is descended from one of these lines, a y DNA test will help confirm that. Of course, there are cases where there might be illegitimacy or adoption (previously unknown) that would/should result in a negative finding.
