    3. Anything is possible. Both HUGH and PARKS are probably very old Scottish names, and may have been used by millions. Whether my line is related to yours, I don't know. If your line is in New Brunswick, which is on the Eastern Coast of Canada, I would imagine they came there via ship at sometime in history. It appears my Parks line was in NC prior to the Revolutionary War, and may have been in VA prior, Ireland prior, and ultimately we should find some Scottish roots, if I get that far back. It appears there is a very large distance geographically between our families, but they may have originated in Ireland or Scotland together in history. 3. My Aunt has confirmed meeting Hugh Preston Parks, who was the Assistant District Attorney of Fayette Co. TN. He was also an avid genealogist. He was also related to my Aunt's Parks family. My Aunt's Parks family descends from the SOMERVILLE, TN Parks family. Their oldest known ancestor is Moses Parks, who is shown in the 1880 census in Fayette Co., TN. I am now trying to connect Moses Parks back to his ancestors in North Carolina. I believe that Moses Parks is a grandson of Hugh Parks, Jr. of Mecklenburg Co NC, who was a Revolutionary War Veteran. I have the confirmation on both his War service, and that he recieved a Federal Land Grant for his services, and that land grant was given to him, was land which is now in Fayette Co TN. I have a copy of the orignal handwritten will of Capt Hugh Parks, Jr. (Thanks to a wonderful, generous researcher) I wish to correspond with any Parks researcher who is related, and especially who can assist me in making this connection back to NC roots. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin

    3. Capt Hugh Parks, Jr. was a Rev. War Vet who lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC. He recieved a land grant from the federal government for services in the War. According to: MARY PARKS MCINTOSH, IN 1907, THE LAND FROM THE WAR GRANT TO HUGH PARKS, Jr. WAS LOCATED IN FAYETTE CO., LOCATED IN WESTERN TENNESSEE. (this is from another researcher) I have just read the excerpt from a book which deals soley with Land Grants from the Revolutionary War, and it says that the land granted to North Carolina soldiers was not located within the PRESENT day NC borders. So this makes sense. The land given to NC soldiers was located OUT of present NC bounderies My oldest KNOWN Parks man of this line is: MOSES PARKS b. 1821 NC, both parents born NC, married Mary A. Culp. Died 1888 in Fayette Co., TN He and his family are shown on the 1880 census at District 14, Fayette Co. TN This is the Sommerville, TN location. This Parks family founded the PARKS CHURCH and SCHOOL and CEMETERY there and are well documented at Sommerville, TN. I DO NOT know the parents of Moses Parks, but I believe that Moses Parks is most likely the grandson of Hugh Parks, the above described Revolutionary War Veteran. According to research posted at World Connect Project at www.rootsweb.com Hugh Parks, Jr. had the following sons: Lycan John Andrew William N. Moses Parks chose to name his own sons: Peter John Thomas If anyone can help me to connect these families or has advice, etc. please write back, Lillian Kathleen Martin

    3. Lillian, does it strike you as interesting that Craige Parks from the Parks linage hook up with the Carolina Davis not original wife. One of Hugh Parks' slave is probably my great grandfather's father (Craige Parks) and Carolina Davis is probably associate with the Davis group from Mary Davis Parks linage. This is just to many interesting name and people not to be interconnected. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lilly" <malik@scs-net.org> To: <PARKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2003 9:11 AM Subject: [PARKS] Capt. 3. Hi! If my guess that Jonas is a misreading of the name Jonathan in the Pomfret records, then there may be another solution. Please look at Jonathan, the son of Richard, who was married to Mary Whiting. This is the family out of the Parke of Massachusetts. And, it is believed that Jonathan and Mary were in CT before going to NY. So if your Jonas was in NY, you might want to look at this family. Here is the link: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/surnames/parks/page42.htm Good Luck!

    3. Cheryl I am to looking but as far as I can go back is to great grand father Craige Parks, North Carolina. I am looking his mother and father which would be early to middle 1800s. If you run accross any information on this person in the 1870 census. I found him and wife and two children in the 1880 census. By 1903 he and remarried to a Carolina Davis. Legend has it that he ran off with Carolina to Mississippi with the three children and left the first wife behind in No. Carolina. Again if you come across any info about Craige Parks please let me know. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl Morris" <camorris@mars.ark.com> To: <PARKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 20, 2003 11:36 PM Subject: [PARKS] Park/e/s Connecticut abt 1740-70 > Hi, > > After an absence, I am back on the list and still looking for the parents > of Aaron Parks [born in October 1764 in either Norwich or Preston per his > Rev War records] -- and there are no matches anywhere for him. > > I've taken the extreme step of putting all the Park/e/s born in CT (that I > can find) between 1700 and 1775 into a database.and still have a lot of > missing people. 3. Hi, After an absence, I am back on the list and still looking for the parents of Aaron Parks [born in October 1764 in either Norwich or Preston per his Rev War records] -- and there are no matches anywhere for him. I've taken the extreme step of putting all the Park/e/s born in CT (that I can find) between 1700 and 1775 into a database.and still have a lot of missing people. Right now, I am adding people who served in French/Indian war and the Revolutionary War to my db. If anyone has any information on Parks deeds or wills in Ashford [Windham County, CT] or Preston/Norwich for the period of about 1765 to 1790, I would like to hear from you. I have good reason to believe that Aaron was descended from the Park/e/s family of Stonington. However, lack of any apparent brothers or sisters makes me wonder if he was an only child. Cheryl

This info from a book named PIONEER TIMES/July 1966 Vol. 10., NO 3 THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL DENT 1755-1834 Samuel Dent, according to census records, was born circa 1755, although his birthplace and his family ties have not been determined. Many Dent families settled originally in Maryland during the late 1600s and early 1700s. Some of these Dents are said to have emigrated from Yorkshire, England. Records in the Maryland Archives list a Revolutionary War service record of one Samuel Dent, of Capt. Clarkson's Company in the Charles Co., MD militia. Many of the Maryland Dents moved westward into neighboring Virginia. Courthouse records list a Samuel Dent in Henry and Franklin (formed 1786 from portions of Henry and Bedford) Counties, from about 1782, as the name appeared on a petition of inhabitants requesting that the county be divided and again on a land record in 1787. Oaths of Allegiance were recorded for Peter Dent and John Dent in 1777 in Bedford Co., Va. Samuel Dent married MARTHA (PATSY) HARRIS, daughter of Revolutionary War Soldier, HENRY HARRIS and ANNIE BIRD/BYRD of that! same area, although the Harrises had lived in pre-revolutionary war days in Orange Co. and possibly in Albermarle Co. Patsy Harris Dent was born 23 May 1770. Samuel Dent sold his 150 acres on reedy Creek in 1795 to John Dent, and by 1796, both Samuel Dent and Henry Harris were living in Madison Co., KY., and were listed on the annual tax list. In 1817, Samuel and Patsy Dent decided to head west and once again sold land, this time, 188 acres on Drowning Creek in Madison Co., KY. (Book M, page 212) A year later, the Dents were over in Franklin Co., MO. Many of the other settlers of Franklin Co., MO were familiar names from KY. About twelve years later, in 1830, Henry Harris, Samuel's father-in-law, being old and infirm, divided and deeded all his Madison Co., KY property to his children and grandchildren. Samuel Dent died in 1834 in Franklin Co., MO. The inventory of his estate was witnessed by John Goode, William Truesdell and C. B. Hinton. Alexander Chambers was executor of the will. The inventory contained notes on H. Fackler, A. Chambers, Samuel Beatty, Dyson Johnson, William Parks, John Harris, Prior Brauly and L. D. Walls. Securities of the estate were William Truesdell and Sion Pritchett. (Note: Anthony S. Garrett died in 1855 in Monroe Co., MO. Bailey Dent was a witness. Garrett (1850 census) lived with his grandson, John Truesdell. Perhaps the William Truesdell, mentioned above, was related to him). WILL OF SAMUEL DENT IN FRANKLIN CO., MO. In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Dent of the county of Franklin in the state of Missouri being now old and infirm in body but of sound mind and disposing memory knowing as I do that I must shortly die, do make constitute and ordain this my last will and testament and do hereby revoke all other wills by me made. The said Negro woman Milley is to be free at the death of my wife. Third, I give to my wife, Patsy, all my household and kitchen furniture. Fourth, I give to my son, Baley Dent, my negro boy, Bob. Eighth, I give to my daughter, Ann Parks, my Negro girl, Eddy, for her and her children forever. Ninth, I give to my daughter, Malinda Johnson (wife of Dyson Johnson) and to her children, my negro Fanny and her issue forever. Tenth, after the death of my wife Patsy, I give to my daughter, Olly, the Negro woman Raney, if she be then living and in case that said negro woman should be dead, then it is my will that Olly shall have out of the estate that may be left at my wife's death, the worth of said Negro woman, Raney. Twelfth, After paying my debts, it is my will that all the money I am now in possession of and that may be collected shall be kept and used by my wife as she thinks proper except so much as may be necessary to make the negroes before mentioned of equal value to each child. Thirteenth, It is my will that my executor cause the negroes to be appraised by disinterested persons and that a sum of money be given to each one to make them all of one value, the money to be taken from that which I have now on hand or may be collected. Fourteenth, I do hereby appoint Alexander Chambers executor of this my last will and testament and hope he will undertake the business and execute it strictly. 3. Nichole here are some notes I copied on John Parks found on rootsweb submision by Shirley Haskell < Iruby@hotmail.com > John Parks, our ancestor, the son of Thomas Parks, was born May 18, 1706 at Essex County, Virginia. He married Mary Sharp August 20, 1715 at King George County, Virginia. The daughter of Elisha Sharp and Margaret Proctor. In the diary of The Rev. Robert Rose he states: "John Parks came to Orange County in 1736 and he was a shoemaker. Parks had two sons, William and John Parks, Jr. and leased 100 acres of Parson Rose's land on Piney River in present Amherst County.---In the lease agreement, Parks was to pay Rose 436 pounds of tobacco annually, on December 26, either at Richmond or Warwick warehouses, and to plant a minimum of 100 apple trees with fence." John Parks was in Albemarle County, Virginia by 1749; he might have been there slightly before that date. From this date until the movement to North Caroline about 1767 he and other Parks had land in that section of the state that in 1761 became Amherst County. Another source of our information on John Parks family comes from the diary of E.M. Parks, which was sent to the Parks Society, stating: "This book was wet and damagaed spring 1853 when returning from Texas trying to swim on horseback one of bayou's in the north of Louisiana and also had myself and all my belongings wet and damaged. In this book he states who John married names their children and date of birth and what happened to them. Also stating that John's father was Thomas Parks. John and Mary Parks settled in Wilkes County, North Carolina and in 1778 John Parks helped to found the capital city of Wilkesboro in Wilkes County, North Carolina. There he made his will February 7, 1787. Mary had died in 1779. The will reads: I John Parks, Sr. of State of North Carolina, County of Wilkes being in perfect sences and memory calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing it is appointed for all men to die I make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following I leave my soul to almity God that give it to me hoping through the merits of my blessed saviour to inherit eternal life and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned and to all my worldly goods it hath pleased God to bless me with I bequeath in manner and form following. Item: my will and desire is that all my just debts be paid fully and satisfied. Item my will and desire is that my son John Parks be paid eight pounds Virginia money out of my estate for one hogshead of tobacco I borrowed of him. Item: I give unto my daughter Sary Sailes five shilling sterling for her full part of my estate. Item: I give unto my son Samuel Parks the land and plantation where I now live also my wagin for his full part of my estate to be delivered to them by my exercutors. Before the day of sale-of my estate. Item: my will and desire is that my son Samuel Parks should have the care and management of my daughter Milly Parks and her part of my estate. Item: my will and desire is that my negros be sold at the highest bidder amongst my children as it's my desire that they be kept among my children. Item: my will and desire is that all the rest of my estate be sold at Publick sail after my death and all the money arising from my hole estate be equally divided amoung the rest of my children and constitute and appoint my son Benjamin Parks, Will Carrel and Samuel Parks executors of this my last will and testament revolking and disannulling all other wills by me heretofore made allowing this to be my last will and testament. Witnesses: on 7 February 1787 William Carrell, George Parks, Benjamin Thruston My will and desire is that some of my estate should be sold to pay my dets before the division of my estate. (There was not much punctation and many mis-spelled words.) The original will is in the North Carolina Archives, cross reference to page 357, Will Bk 1: Wilkes County, North Carolina. (Will, Bk 1, pg 257: Wilkes Co., NC; pages from E.M. Parks diary; Land Records of Albemarle and Amherst County, Virginia and genealogy papers of Rose Parks, website of Bokay family.") 3. Good luck, but keep in mind that just about every lineage going back anywhere near Charlemagne or Brian Boru is made up lies. 11th century nobleman really wanted to be descended from prestigious lines so they often fabricated thier ancestry to make themselves look good. Don't believe anything you are told, see for yourself. By the way the only documents even worth looking at are monastic records ALL the rest are fakes. Kelly A.
