    3. Hi Lorri, It can be so difficult searching for a name like this... a couple of hints. Do you know her birth year? If so you could actually go on to a search site like ancestry and enter first name Ellen, birth year (you should do the 3-5 year range if that is an option) and birthplace... Ireland. Everyone in Philly on that census with the name Ellen, born in Ireland and the birth year you enter will come up.... yes it's a long shot and could be hundreds but you can browse through and hopefully find her. The other thought is if you know any children or relatives she may have lived with look for them on the census. I had a similar situation and was unable to find a ggg grandfather who I know was born and died there, by doing the above search by James and birth year, I came up with him. James Hudson, but he was listed as James Pludson, you can see how someone not familiar with old hand writing or English could confuse a fancy H with a P L and keep in mind most of these census indexes are completed over seas where English is a second language. Good Luck and let us know what happens!! I have friends whose surname is Burilin but there is no such name historically. They went from Ireland to Liverpool (England) in the 1840s or 50s and were illiterate so their name was probably Burlin or Barlin but if you imagine it pronounced with an Irish accent you can see how it became Burilin They kept the name anyway.
