    3. I tried some years ago to obtain records on a great aunt who was committed to a psychiatric institution in Maryland. I was not successful; the institution cited HIPAA, even though she died in the 1940's. For more information on HIPAA, go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_Insurance_Portability_and_Accountability_Act or http://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/ For genealogical legal interpretations, see: http://www.legalgenealogist.com/2012/02/09/getting-hip-on-hipaa/ and http://www.legalgenealogist.com/2013/04/08/breakthrough-for-medical-genealogy/ . For genealogical requests for psychiactric institutions, see: http://www.asylumprojects.org/index.php?title=Asylum_Projects_Genealogical_Requests Start by contacting the Institution directly and see how they respond. 3. When I stated I received copies of many pages from the institution in Indiana, one being her admittance record and stating she died there - no other record has been found to date, and they refuse to admit she is buried there - she died there in 1889 so times have changed - although they do vary from state to state. One thing though have you found her on the 1940 census. Was she there, or was she still at home?
