    3. Hello listers,   I am trying to research the following DEENY/DEENEY/DENEY family.   Archibald Deeny married Bridget Daly in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1895. Two sons were born in Derry, William Deeny in 1896 and John Deeny in 1898.   Archibald Deeny emigrated to the USA, arriving in New York in 1909 where he was to visit his cousin, James Walker, who lived on North Alder St, Philadelphia.   Archibald appears on the 1910 US census living as a boarder in Philadelphia.  He states he is married but there is no sign of Bridget or his sons.     The next mention of Archibald Deeney is on the WW1 Draft cards when he is living on North 13th Street, PA.  His next of kin is his wife Bridget, of the same address.    Archibald DENEY appears on the 1920 US census as a 44 year old street car driver.  He is married but again, there is no sign of Bridget. He is living on North 13th Street with his 21 year old son, John DENEY, a newspaper engineer.   On the 1920 US census, I have located a William Deeney, aged 22, living in Manhattan, New York.  Born in Ireland, he was a lodger and his occupation was a labourer.   On the 1930 US census, living in Manhattan, New York,  I have located John Deeny (born ca 1898 in Ireland), his wife Katie (born ca 1899 in Ireland) and sons Joseph (born ca 1924 in Ireland) and James (born ca 1927 in New York).  John Deeny died in Philadelphia, PA in November 1961.   Is there anyone out there with further information or connections to this family?  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you,   Jenni Gibson (Melbourne, Australia)

    3. Hi Jenni, I thought I'd do some quick lookups for you, but had no luck. I thought Bridget might have died between the c. 1917 draft card and the 1920 census -- and GenealogyBank.com has the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper digitized through 1922. No luck with Bridget Deeney, Deeny, or Deney. (A couple of Bridgets, but one died in 1880, the other was married to someone else / with other kids). You don't mention Archibald after 1920, so I thought he might have died. No luck with Archibald Deeney, Deeny, or Deney. You say John died in Nov. 1961, but the Social Security Death Index (also on GenealogyBank) doesn't have a match, so that was no help. There were other John Deeneys, including more modern obits -- but none that look like your Deeneys. In 1920, Archibald is 44, so in 1930 he should be 54 -- and presumably Bridget would be in her late 40s or 50s, too -- but you didn't find either of them in the US census. They're a little on the young side to have died (not impossible, of course, but odd that both would die so young), so have you considered that they might have gone back to Ireland? Could Archibald have gone back to take over the family farm? (Assuming you know where the family is from, and that it's farm country, you could look into land records at the Valuation Office, etc.). You say Archibald emigrated in 1909, but the first sign you have of Bridget emigrating is c. 1917 -- have you looked for her in the 1911 Irish census? (Online, free, from the National Archives of Ireland -- http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ ). The 1901 census is there, too, in case you don't have the family's entry (i.e., before Archibald emigrated). Have you found Bridget and the kids on a ship's list? Here's hoping someone else had better luck looking for your Deeneys... Sorry! Regards, Claire K.
