I wonder if they are referring to a Sanatorium where folks who came thru the port were sent to recover from or be certified as free of different diseases we don't even see any more. And I'm thinking specifically of leperosy because he came from Hawaii and seems to me that in that time frame it was a problem in the Hawaiian Islands (Catholic School upbringing is leaking thru here cause Father Damian set up hospitals and refuges on Molokai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_Damien) I googled it but didn't find anything but it's certainly worth researching. Maybe call the Free Library - central branch and use their lookup service? Has anyone ever heard of a place called "Skull Island" ?? I have been trying to trace my Hawaiian Grandfather, David KAHANA, born: 26 Feb. 1894, Honuapo, Kau District, Hawaii Island, Kingdom f Hawaii - died: 31 December 1952, Philadelphia, PA. I have been talking to a family member and was told that Grandpop Dave and 4 ther Hawaiians, came to the US mainland in 1910 through New York, were turned way, then tried to enter through the Port of Baltimore, and were turned away gain. When they entered through the Port of Philadelphia, they were sent to omeplace called Skull Island. I was told "that was were they sent Hawaiians". I on't know who 'they' were or why only 'Hawaiians' would be sent there. I have US Civil Service papers from the NARA, that states Grandpop Dave arrived n the US in August of 1910, and that he entered through the Port of hiladelphia. I have not yet done any research for other ports yet, so I have ot verified this info yet. Thanks in advance. -- ee Kaelin Maialetti hiladelphia, Pa. ************* istowner: KAELIN-L *************** aelin Ancestry Page ttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kaelin/index.html *************** enealogy Blog: Looking Into The Past ttp://lookingintothepast.blogspot.com/ *************** emetery Photography Blog: Perspectives ttp://perspectively.blogspot.com/
