Lorri, Where are you located? Well, that is --I don't really need to know, but you do. If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry.com (wait on that awhile; it's expensive), then what to do is to call the county library wherever you live, and ask if they have HeritageQuest in their system, and whether or not you can access that from home. They have ALL of the census records up to 1940, for free. Just call and ask. If the phone person doesn't know, ask for a supervisor or for the Head Librarian. Even if the library only allows access AT the library itself, that's still good, and you can use their computers there to see census records, City Directories, and more. Copy these records onto a portable thumb drive ("memory stick"), and then take them home where you can look at them again. Or else, just take a notebook and pencil, and write down what you need. If the county library (or your city library) has online access for your area, you are totally Golden! Go to the library for your access number (mine here is a big long 14-number PIN they give us). They will also give you the URL that you need to access in order to find HeritageQuest (save that!!). Then at home, bookmark the page (don't forget!!), and then you can login to the system from home whenever you need to. If you are in a city which has a Family History Center (FHC), they will have the census records too --also for free. There are at least one FHC in every state and in some states, several. They can also order other records you may need, such as film reels which have other important info. Check the phone book, or google "Family History Center" + your location. Otherwise, if it's a question about people in Philadelphia, someone here will be glad to help, if you ask us ON the list. Provide enough info on your subject(s) that we can get some idea of what is needed and about what time period. Keeping our fingers crossed that your library has online access!! Meanwhile, let us know if there is something we can help with before you find out about the library. Just give us enough details to get started.
