We have compiled a significant amount of information on our Allen family at ancestry.com going back to Col. Richard Allen b.1741 d.1832 in Wilkes County, NC. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and the first Sheriff of Wilkes County, NC We believe Richard's father was John Allen b.1715/16 and married Ann(e) Rhodes/Rhoads in St. John's Parish, Baltimore, MD in 1740. We earlier thought that John's lineage was traceable back to Edward Allen b.1634 in MA and also traceable to a daughter of Resolved White, a passenger on the Mayflower. When we attempted to register our lineage with the Mayflower group, we learned that it was not our John Allen that connects back to Edward Allen/Resolved White. OK, so who was our John Allen? One piece of anecdotal information we've discovered is that he was a building contractor in the city of Philadelphia, PA during the 1730-1760 period and may have died as early as 1765. Our online searches have not, so far, discovered any information to support this story. My objective is to seek ideas on where to search, online if possible, since none of us that are searching live near PA. Any guidance on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
