I am trying to obtain any information on the Church of the Holy Family that was located at N. 17th and Stiles. Does anyone know anything about this church. A relative was married there in 1874 and I do find the priest in the 1874 City Directory, but no information on this church at the Archdiocese. I know that St. Joe's Prep is at that location now along with the Church of the Gesu. Was the Church of the Gesu originally known as the Church of the Holy Family? It is used by St. Joseph's Prep for special events. The Church of the Holy Famly merged into Gesu after that church building was completed. I found this... The foundations of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Gesu, corner of Eighteenth and Stiles Streets, are completed and work upon the structure will begin at once. The Church, when finished, will be one of the largest and handsomest in Philadelphia. The Old Church of the Holy Family will be merged into the large Academy building, now standing on Stiles Street, and to be known as St Joseph's College. And this.... On the bitter cold night of January 30, 1966, disaster struck. A general alarm fire of unknown origin consumed the "Old Prep". This included the original St Joseph's College buildings along Stiles Street which were recycled from the original Church of the Holy Family and the first rectory[2].
