I was involved with Rootsweb and USGenWeb long before Ancestry came along and don't remember you although I do remember Joan Young and all the hard work she put in. Rootsweb was always volunteer oriented but privately owned and never a right or some such as many seem to think. Many of those still around from the old days realize that without Ancestry's support Rootsweb would have long since ceased to exist and are far from being Ancestry sycophant as you so label us. None of this yammering is going to change anything and I applaud Joan for trying to find a good resolution to the situation and the future. -----Original Message----- From: Aaron Hill <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 12:55 PM To: Joan Young via PAPHILAD <[email protected]> Cc: Joan Young <[email protected]> Subject: [PAPhl] Re: Mailing lists on RootsWeb will be disabled in March 2020 God forbid! I wanted to get the word out. I have been involved with RootsWeb long before Ancestry had anything to do with it. I would like to know how RootsWeb is governed and managed. It is a new era and RootsWeb should become independent again. The fact that you are an Ancestry sycophant and a rude administrator is sad and pathetic. Doesn't sound to me as if you supported this list in the past and it is the fact that the lists have been pretty much moribund for a long time now that that has resulted in Ancestry deciding they are no longer needed or worth the time and effort to support them. Times change and the resources genealogists use change along with them. I'd urge people who actually DO use this list to use the RootsWeb/Ancestry message board for Philadelphia as an alternative resource. It is fairly active and we have many valuable "helpers" on the board. The boards are archived just like the list and they are free to use. If you want to post on the boards you do need a FREE Ancestry guest account but using the boards is totally free. https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.c ounties.philadelphia/mb.ashx I'd suggest bookmarking the message board. I received the following message this morning. Please protest this short-sighted move, if you see fit. Perhaps if they hear from enough us, Ancestry will reverse course. To comment on this betrayal of the genealogical community and the values behind RootsWeb, send your message to [email protected] or contact Ancestry via 1-800-615-6560. For other methods, such as mail, visit https://www.ancestry.com/corporate/contact-us. Aaron J. Hill aaronjhill.wordpress.com From RootsWeb Administration <[email protected]> Tue 1/7/2020 9:36 AM Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community.
