League Island is actually the name of a park - directly across the street from the Stadiums in South Phila. And abutting the old Navy Yard - also known as Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park or "the lakes" as we kids always called it (when we WERE kids). It may have been islands that were filled in at one point but it was a park in the 50's when I was going to Girl Scout Day Camp there and taking my brothers fishing in the lakes. And, as a point of interest, it is where the Snakehead fish was found last year as an infiltrator in one of the creeks or lakes.
