    1. CROUT - HARVEY and possibly VANDEGRIFT of Philadelphia
    2. Laurie
    3. William B. CROUT, born c1831 in PA, married Rebecca (maiden name unknown). The spelling of William's age is consistent in that he does age 10 years each 10 years (unlike his wife <G>), and I've a Civil War Pension Index Record that I believe to be his as it names a widow Rebecca and a "helpless child" Mary Ella (they had a child named Mary Ella, sometimes named Ella in the census). Using census reports, it appears that his parents may be William CROUT and Margaret. Rebecca's name varies from census to census (Reba., Rebbeca, Rebeca) as does her age (in 1920 she's 64, in 1910 54, in 1900 38, in 1880 24). She is the mother to 3 or 4 children (that number also varies), and it is their daughter Virginia that I'm most interested in. In the 1880 census, a Clara V. VANDERGRIFT, single, age 18, is living with William and Rebecca with relationship given as sister-in-law. I've searched VANDEGRIFT but have not found Rebecca with this last name (only a hunch using this census). Virginia CROUT married Charles HARVEY c1901 in Philadelphia, PA. Virginia and Charles had one child, a son named Whitman HARVEY, born Feb 1907 and died 1977. I believe the 1900 census report, which lists Rebecca's children (she's the head of household) as Ella, Pennsylvania, and Wm. B. should read Ella or Mary Ella, *Virginia*, and Wm B. I cannot find a census record for Virginia HARVEY or Rebecca CROUT in 1930; each is widowed. Nor have I found a census record for 1860 for William CROUT. If anyone connects to this family or has any knowledge of them, I'd love to hear from you. I've just begun researching this line, using mostly directories and census reports to date; there is virtually no family history that's been passed down so I need to rely on this type of record.
