From my sister-in-law: "In a message dated 1/16/2006 5:40:15 AM Eastern Standard Time, drybones@netreach.net writes: Do you know if a St John's Lutheran Church still exists on Judson St, or if it merged, who with? I presume there is no longer a Danish Lutheran Synod. I know you kindly sent me a list, but this disorganized soul can't find it. According to the ELCA 2006 directory, the only St. John's in Philadelphia is the one at Tyson and Hawthorne........ Lutherans being the odd sort they are, they don't list other synods anywhere. I know there is still a Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod and a Wisconsin Synod. Never head of a Danish Lutheran Synod. Sorry I can't be more help. Sandy" Since she is a member of the church at Tyson and Hawthorne, I presume this is as good as you are going to get in terms of a current St John's. I don't remember hearing of a Danish United Synod either, but then I was raised German Reformed. If I hear of another St John's I will let you know. Elizabeth Many thanks for your efforts. According to Google info the various synods went through many reorganizations in the 1930s and 40s. There were Norwegian, Danish Missori and several others who apparently joined together. However none of them mentioned Philadelphia. I looked up 1950 N Judson Street. That neighborhood went mostly black in the 1960s, and the church would probably have moved or merged then, if not earlier. There are many, many churches (and synagogues) in Philadelphia where the enough of the congregation has moved to fancier neighborhoods or to the suburbs that there is no one left around the church, and the building has been sold to another congregation or demolished. Even in 1951, when I graduated from high school, that neighborhood was full of people from Eastern Europe, so the congregation may have gotten out still earlier. A lot of the churches had no phones, so unless you know the minister's names, you would not find them in the phone book either. If I can find a Bulletin Almanac for the period I can see when the church stopped being there (the Almanac was published every year until the early '70s by the Evening Bulletin, which went out of business itself in 1981 or 1982). I only have one from about 1971 and I can't find it. I don't have any other answers for you. Elizabeth C Staff wrote: > Elizabeth > Many thanks for your efforts.
