Can anyone help me further on this family? The 1870 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 54th District 18th Ward, taken on the 20th of June shows a Michael Shields, 27 years of age and wife Mary, 22 years of age with one child, Maggie age 3/12. The 1880 census for Philadelphia -Film FHL #1255104 National Archive film T9-1184 Page 130B shows a Michael Shields age 35, wife Mary age 31, daughter Maggie age 10, son Daniel age 7, and a sepson [???]son Michael age 3, and cousin John James age 25. There is a Michael Shields listed in the 1900 census of Philadelphia, PA taken on June 11 in the 36th Ward of Enumeration District #936. This Michael Shields, street paver, is living on Penrose Street and is listed as born in March 1850 in Ireland and married for 32 years. This doesn't work out as it shows his wife as Mary, born December 1844 and born in Pennsylvania. It shows him living in the United States since 1870 and 30 years. The years married and years in this country don't work out if she was born in Pennsylvania, but the census have a lot of incorrect numbers. I do believe this to be the correct Michael Shields as our ancestor. This census shows Michael's father and mother born in Ireland. Mary's father born in Prussia [now Germany or Poland] and her mother born in Ireland. Two children are listed in this census. Daisy M., daughter born October, 1886 in Pennsylvania and a son John J. born June, 1883. Mary is shown as having seven children with four still living in 1900. The 1910 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania taken on April 18th on Passjunk Ave?? next is Jackson Street shows a Michael Shields age 65, married 43 years, born in Ireland and coming to the United States in 1866 and Naturalized [this would help the data from the 1900 census since his arrival date to this country would explan the marriage of 32 years] . His wife is Mary A. born in Pennsylvania, age 62, having gave birth to seven children, with three living. The rest of the family in this household are Daniel, son, age 37, married 6 years; daughter Mary E. Miller, age 27, married 8 years with three children, two living; a son in law, Frank Miller age 27; Marie Miller, niece, age 7; John Miller, nephew, age 3; and John J. Shields, son, age 25. The father, Michael's occupation is General Contractor. The son in law, Frank Miller is a cement contractor. In looking for a Michael Shields in the 1920 census Index, I was unable to find a Michael Shields, so I looked up Frank Miller, his son in law and in the household in the previous census. I find the Frank Miller family and living with them or adjacent is a Daniel Shields age 77, widowed and coming to the US in 1866, naturalized it looks like 1876?, with son John age 48 and son Michael age 35. I believe this to be the family with the names wrong. I think Daniel should be Michael and Michael, Daniel. This was taken on January 5th 1920, Enumeration District 809, Sheet 2A, Ward 26. A phone call to the Holy Cross Cemetery in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, located about five miles from Philadelphia, phone number 1-610-626-2206 made on January 10th 2005, informed that Margaret C. Also listed in this lot are Michael Shields, age 20, December 10 1907; baby, Margaret Zennie buried on August 16th 1916; and Michael Shields, age 76, buried August 22nd 1925.
