I need to have some clarification here: I found Michael Neff in the 1900 census. His wife's name is not listed. Their children are listed as Edward, Albert and William with two grandchildren listed as Albert and William. They are living in the 19th ward Dist 387 - is this your Michael Neff. If so he is listed as being born in May of 1860 and the wife Jan of 1860 Please tell me if this is your family? > From: geneslady@ec.rr.com > To: paphilad@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 18 May 2010 14:45:03 -0400 > Subject: [PAPhl] Eva M. Fleischman, b. 1843 > > My gg grandmother, Eva M. Fleischman, has been my biggest brickwall for many years and I'm hoping this well-versed group from Philly can help. Eva M. Fleischman was born 15 Dec 1843 in Philadelphia, Pa. (taken from death certificate) and died 26 Oct 1923 in Philadelphia. She married Michael Neff in 1865 (date taken from 1900 Census) and had 3 sons: Edward M. Neff (b. Apr 1866), Albert F. Neff (b. Mar 1867), and William Neff (b. Mar 1868). I have found Eva on every census after her marriage, but nothing before 1870. I would love to find her parents and any siblings. The only clue I have (and maybe it's no help at all) is from Michael's obit: Bayerischer Unters Verein , No 1, and Unders Verein des D. S. S.Verein were invited to the funeral. Since my gg grandparent's were in the grocery business, I thought maybe her family were undertakers and out of courtesy were invited to Michael's funeral. > Any help (large or small) would be greatly appreciated.....as I'm ready to start pulling my hair out!!!!!! > > Thanks, > Barbara > in Wilmington, NC > ********* > Visit the threaded archives of this list: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PAPHILAD > ********* > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PAPHILAD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy is not the too busy. It was not a funeral director or undertaker association. It was a burial association, sort of an insurance association. The members paid dues to the society so that when they died there would be a money for them to be buried. This was before the concept of "life" insurance. XXX unters Verein is commonly seen as the name of a burial society when searching listings in Jewish cemeteries. Just as an example, if you search in the Mount Carmel Cemetery in New York http://www.mountcarmelcemetery.com/search.asp on the word "verein" in the "society" field, you get 596 hits, all for burials under burial societies with the word in the name of the society. Great information Susan! I just made a couple of calls in an attempt to clear up the "big mystery". A very nice lady at Our Lady of Hope (where St. Stephen's Spiritual records are held, but NOT the cemetery records) said the cemetery is still there. And you are right, the care of the lots was turned over to the Catholic Cemeteries Office. The nice lady didn't have an exact location for St. Stephen's cemetery, but she thougt it was close by New Cathedral Cemetery, also in Nicetown. I think the cemetery location is Lycoming and Elser Sts. New Cathedral is Front and Luzerne. Google map has them 1.4 mi. apart. Sunday,June 6th, 2010 is the 322d Anniversary of the founding of the congregation. 11:00 AM is the Communion Service. Open house with refreshments will be held from 2-4. The traditional Anniversary Service will be held at 4:00. A special video tribute to church historian, Mrs. Patricia Worthington Stopper will be made. Guest speaker is Rev. Jeff Faggart. This cemetery seems to be a big mystery. But it appears the graves are still there and the care of the lot is turned over to the Catholic Cemeteries Office. Early on, some of my ancestors removed their family to New Cathedral but I don't think that was true of the whole cemetery. Susan
On the findagrave site it lists St. Stephen's with two burials, last names NEEDHAM and notes this cemetery was also known as Nicetown Catholic Graveyard. Use the link below to see the web page. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2343061&CScn=St.+Stephen&CScntry=4&CSst=40& On another web site I found a list of soldiers' burials. Several are buried at New Cathedral Cemetery and the note reads "this cemetery is situated at 2nd and Butler. Initially known as Nicetown cemetery. http://www.69thpa.co.uk/page8.html Hope this might be helpful to you in your search. Spiritual records from St. Stephen are kept at Our Lady of Hope Church, 5200 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19141-1628. Phone-215-329-8100. You could ask them. An educated guess would be removal of the graves to New Cathedral Cemetery, probably the closest Catholic cemetery. The church and its grounds were sold after its closing in 1993. There might be articles about the cemetery in THE CATHOLIC STANDARD AND TIMES. I just can't imagine the Archdiocese NOT doing something about the graves. I'll try to find out more.
