The year is 1866 , she was 22 years old, which I thought of as young to belong to such organazations and for being female. thanks , Teresa ----- Original Message ----- From: "the cohens" <the.cohens.in.california@gmail.com> To: paphilad@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, May 28, 2010 6:56:07 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [PAPhl] obituary question when was this? there is a "Principia Discordia" but that wasn't until around 1965. O. of P.D." are invited to attend her funeral etc... does anyone know what the abbreviations , intials stand for or what they mean? thanks for any clues , sincerely, teresa.
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Annie SCARLETT which was taken at the Dunshee Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Annie appearing to be in her 20's at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to find the following possible match in census records: 1900 census of Philadelphia, PA: Annie SCARLETT, age 42, born Aug 1857, married 24 years, 11 children/11 living, born PA, parents born PA, a Grocer Ellen SCARLETT, dau, age 22, born Jun 1877, born PA, parents born PA, a Cigar Maker James SCARLETT, son, age 17, born Mar 1883, born PA, parents born PA, a Cart Driver William SCARLETT, son, age 15, born Apr 1885, born PA, parents born PA, at School Mary SCARLETT, dau, age 14, Apr 1886, born PA, parents born PA, at School Francis SCARLETT, son, age 11, born May 1889, born PA, parents born PA, at School George SCARLETT, son, age 9, born May 1891, born PA, parents born PA, at School Joseph SCARLETT, son, age 7, born Nov 1892, born PA, parents born PA Annie SCARLETT, dau, age 5, born Oct 1894, born PA, parents born PA Edward SCARLETT, son, age 3, born Aug 1896, born PA, parents born PA 1910 census of Philadelphia, PA: Annie SCARLETT, age 49, 2nd marriage 30 years, 11 children/11 living, born PA, parents born PA James SCARLETT, son, age 28, born PA, parents born PA, Express Wagon Driver William SCARLETT Jr., son, age 25, born PA, parents born PA, a Cloth Mill Wrapper Frank SCARLETT, son, age 21, born PA, parents born PA, a Cloth Mill Operator George SCARLETT, son, age 18, born PA, parents born PA, a Candy Maker Joseph SCARLETT, son, age 17, born PA, parents born PA, a Cloth Mill Spooler Annie SCARLETT, dau, age 16, born PA, parents born PA, a Steam Laundry Helper Edward SCARLETT, son, age 15, born PA, parents born PA, a Cloth Mill Office Boy George BOYLE, nephew, age 15, born PA, parents born PA 1920 census of Philadelphia, PA: Anna SCARLETT, age 59, a widow, born PA, parents born PA Edward SCARLETT, son, age 23, born PA, parents born PA, a Shipyard Caulker I am hoping to locate someone from Annie's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
I want to thank everyone for their help on this and I think you have answered my question of why Annie Leary might not be listed in the directory. On Phila. death record, she is listed as housekkeeper so she must have been the housekkeeper for this family. Guess I will have to go to Plan 2 and order her death record from VR as the one on FHC no longer gives actual copies anymore and they did not enter all the data on the typed page. One more question, do the Phila directories have a page of who died within the year as I know some directories do this? Elaine

But it could be Daughters of Pythias, if they were in Philly. The Knights of Pythias is not a Jewish organization.
A. O. of P.D could be American Order of Pythias Daughters. She could have belonged to more than one chapter, I know Masons who belonged to a number of different chapters, for one reason or another. Now, I hope someone finds out for sure if this idea is on the mark or not.
Daughters of Pythias - the womans branch of the Knights of Pythias; they function is largely charitable above from: http://thebestnotes.com/booknotes/I_Know_Why_The_Caged_Bird_Sings/Caged_Bird_Sings34.html google the following for more hits, the plus and quotes tell google you want that exact phrase: +"Daughters of Pythias"
The D of P could be daughters of something, kind of like Rainbow Girls is a Masonic fraternal order for young women whose fathers are in the Masons. And Eastern Star will take young couples, I am not sure if they will take men and women separately, but fraternal groups are not just for older people. Do you know if there were any family members later on, in known fraternal groups? That might be a clue as to where else to look for information. I have heard of Knights of Pythias, which I think is Jewish, but I do not know for sure. But it could be Daughters of Pythias, if they were in Philly.

I found the following book in the Phoenix library. It contains a lot of information on old organizations, fraternities, lodges, etc. Albert C. Stevens, Editor and Compiler, "The Cyclopedia of Fraternities", (New York: E. B. Treat and Company, 1907) Perhaps your local library has or can borrow a copy for you. > Guess I will have to go to Plan 2 and order her death record from VR as the one on FHC no longer gives actual copies anymore and they did not enter all the data on the typed page. No, if the one on the typed page gives you a batch number or film number, you should be able to order a photocopy from the LDS copy service for much less expense. More about this on my ordering tips page, including a direct link to the order form: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/ordering.html#lds Now, maybe all they have is a filmed index, but if they have more than that, it may be a cheaper way to go, at $2 a page with a $4 minimum order.
I have seen dates of death listed in some directories, but not in any Philadelphia city directories. I've used these for various surnames for several years, and that little gem of information hasn't been spotted by me. Also, looking at the changes made in the front or back of the directories, is a way to see who was removed or added from some of them -- that can give clues, but I personally haven't found it all that useful. I just want to let you know to check out the other parts of the directories (one has a fantastic map!). Do you have the exact date of death? If you do, I may be able to help you with this one, but it wouldn't be for another week or two. --- On Fri, 5/28/10, bellemarco@gmail.com <bellemarco@gmail.com> wrote: One more question, do the Phila directories have a page of who died within the year as I know some directories do this?
There is a charge for this site, it is not free. $79.99 per year or $11.95 monthly. It is on sale right now for a year for half that price, I just double checked: http://go.footnote.com/special/?p=extend&iid=742 But let's get back to helping her with her research, not to get too off-topic. In my own directory research, in which I like to study all the entries for a surname for a span of twenty to thirty years in a particular city, I find that surnames can often be misspelled, house numbers entered wrong, and that women do not tend to be listed unless they are employed or a head of household. So, I would suggest checking one or two years before and after 1897 and 1898 as well as alternate spellings if you can catch her or a spouse or a child listed, or that address in any other years. If I am looking for a member of a particular family, then I also look for the addresses of any known children, also using all the spelling variants of their surnames I can think of, as sometimes I turn up a known address, or one that is a few digits off. Most of my directory research has been for other areas, especially Cleveland and Northern California, but I have done some Philadelphia directory research as well. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/dubinskydir.html http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/ > --- On Fri, 5/28/10, jwest21@kc.rr.com <jwest21@kc.rr.com> wrote: > There is a charge for this site, it is not free. $79.99 per year or $11.95 > monthly.
