    3. "House keeper" or "keeps house" is commonly used for married women in the census and other records. Similar usage to what we more recently would have called "homemaker." Sorry, I don't have the earlier posts in this thread to check, but thought I'd mention this in case she was married, in the hopes it would save you from trying to chase down a family for whom she worked. Just keep in mind that the term might just signify her marital status. Hope that helps. Claire K seekay@comcast.net On May 28, 2010, at 3:57 PM, bellemarco@gmail.com wrote: > ...Annie Leary... 3. Church of The Gesu translates to The Church of The Holy Name of Jesus. It was founded in 1868 and located at 18th and Thompson Sts. The Church of the Gesu (The Holy Name of Jesus) closed in 1993. It is used by St. Joseph's Prep for special events. The Church of the Holy Famly merged into Gesu after that church building was completed. I found this... The foundations of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Gesu, corner of Eighteenth and Stiles Streets, are completed and work upon the structure will begin at once. The Church, when finished, will be one of the largest and handsomest in Philadelphia. The Old Church of the Holy Family will be merged into the large Academy building, now standing on Stiles Street, and to be known as St Joseph's College. And this.... On the bitter cold night of January 30, 1966, disaster struck. A general alarm fire of unknown origin consumed the "Old Prep". This included the original St Joseph's College buildings along Stiles Street which were recycled from the original Church of the Holy Family and the first rectory[2]. If you would like to read the entire article go here... http://www.organistjohn.com/GesuDocs/The_Church_of_the_Gesu.htm another interesting article... http://www.ignatianimprints.org/spring07/philly.shtml Regards, Mary McCanney Finley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Regina Nau" <reginanau@msn.com> To: <paphilad@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 01, 2010 3:32 PM Subject: [PAPhl] Church of the Holy Family > > I am trying to obtain any information on the Church of the Holy Family > that was located at N. 17th and Stiles. 1. [PAPhl] Parents/family of Elizabeth WRIGHT 1772-1843, Philadelphia
    2. I have a Trinity Oxford tombstone inscription (Trinity Church tombstone records LDS #21590) that reads: "Elizabeth Wright, relict of William Ashton, b 1772 d 1843" This is the ONLY reference to what I think is Elizabeth's maiden name, but I can't find a family for her, and I wonder if there's a mistake? I feel like I've exhausted all the known Wrights in the Philadelphia area and can find no leads. They lived in the Lower Dublin/Oxford area (NE) of Philadelphia. Elizabeth would have married William around 1791-92 when she was about 19-20 years old, but there's no church records. Trinity only intermittently had a minister at that time, so either they didn't marry there, the records were destroyed or don't exist, or someone else married them. I find nothing in available out of state records either. Elizabeth's first son's middle name was KEEN, suggesting that could also be a maiden name, or maybe her mother's maiden name, but I've found no WRIGHT/KEEN connections. And while there's been a couple Ashton/Keen marriages, it hasn't been with William's direct line, or his siblings. The KEEN family also appears to be well-researched. Elizabeth married a second time, after William died, to a man named WHITE. Was it generally "protocol" to list the wife's maiden name when buried with her first husband, after marriage to a second? Could someone have mistakenly carved WRIGHT vice WHITE? Her son Joseph Keen Ashton also married an Elizabeth WRIGHT; if he was the informant, perhaps named were accidentally switched? I should also note that I'm aware families tended to stick together over generations, so 2 generations marrying into the same family (ie Wrights) was pretty normal. But I've investigated this, and can't find a connection. Can anyone help? I'm so frustrated. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Sharon

I did look and the dozen or so Philly posts there at this point do not seem to be your family. But have you looked for the nephew in the Social Security Death index? That might give you when and where he died to help with an obit search.

Unfortunately, through trial and error, we found out she was not a maiden name Foley but a Crilly family member so I am back to step one on her. However, I think I now have the right Annie Foley as we have found her marriage record. She married a William Chadwick in 1889 and a fellow lister found her in the Phila directories 1896-1904. She is listed as widow of William in 1896 directory so he died before that date. I cannot find her on the 1900 census when she should have been living at 1529 Wood Street according to 1889 and 1900 directories. Annie died in March 25, 1906 and we have her obit. In 1910 census,a Joseph Chadwick is living with her sister and is listed as a nephew. Any Chadwick researchers out there? Any and all help appreciated......again, please. Thank you. 1. [PAPhl] Cathedral Death Records
    2. Our Michael McBride's funeral was from the Cathedral in Oct. 1886. What kind of records, if any, would they have on his burial? How would I go about obtaining these records? Thank you. Elaine Sharp Sacramento CA

    3. Elaine, The death certificate, obituary and cemetery record and if you are lucky enough to have a Funeral Director still in business will all yield more details for you. I have a wonderful inventory from Donahue Funeral Homes, still in business, that details the cost of candles, suit, shirt, tie, etc. for one of mine. I've been wrong before, but I think a funeral record in a parish would only list a name and date. 3. Thank you, Mary. I do have the obit and cemetery record - not much in either. I am working on obtaining the death certificate. Don't know the name of the funeral home. Elaine
