This is our brick wall in Philadelphia research - Phillip Kline b. 1718 in Berks County. I have researched him a couple of years ago without much success. I have him in 1850 census with his family and quite a few directories between 1847 and 1958 in Philadelphia. His first son was born in Hamburg, Berks County in 1839. The latest Phila. directory I have him in is: 1858 DIRECTORY Philip Kline 334 N. 15th lab. 1858/1859 PHILIP DIED- but I have been unable to find his death record. 1859 DIRECTORY Catherine at 524 3rd St., 1860 DIRECTORY Catherine wid of Philip 1731 Carlton I am trying to find the death record for Philip Kline. Any new ideas? Elaine
Regina, 1850 census says he was a "clerk" and all directories say "lab." The one you sent is a possibility, however, our Phillip was born in Berks County, PA and this one says Ireland. I could order the death record but hesitate because of that. A family history recently given to me by a family member says that his "family was by trade butchers" but I don't know how accurate that is. Phillip remained in the Berks County area at least until 1840 as he is in the census there and I first find them in Philadelphia in the 1850 census. Elaine
Marriage records at the Phila City Archives (at 3101 Market St) cover the period between July 1, 1860 and December 30, 1885. The marriage index is contained in a series of big old books that are fairly easy to use but only contains name, year of marriage, and the page number in the registry where more information can be found. From there, the registry can be searched on microfilm but these are usually very difficult to read. Registry provides name of bride and groom, full date of marriage, the location of their residence, where born, occupation, age, religious affiliation, location of marriage, and name of minister. If you want to research further, then one can look at the minister's returns again on microfilm. Found my gr-gr grandparents, who were married at St Vincent's in Germantown in 1864, in this archive recently. Philadelphia City Archives has marriage licenses from 1885. Sndtenterprises Genealogical and Historical Research
The oldest marriage record available at the Philadelphia City Archives is 1860. I have located some marriages going back that far, but the further back in time, the harder they are to find. Pre-1860 would most likely be found in church records and/or newspaper announcements. The link for the archives with more details is: http://www.phila.gov/phils/Docs/Inventor/genealgy.htm#marriages
Marriage records for those early dates are church records. Try the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Thank you for the reply. I was hoping to locate a county record that would give more information than the church record that gives only the date. Were there no county licenses issued or were they destroyed.... do you know? I have been able to locate marriage licenses in other states during that time that listed consent of father, etc. I was hoping I would get that lucky with the Philly records. Thank you. Good Morning, It has been several years since I have researched Philadelphia records; can someone tell me if there were county records for marriage bonds, licenses, etc. for the period 1770-1800? I have the church records with dates but was hoping to find a bond that might give a clue to parents. What records are available for the 1700s? Does anyone on this list have access to the book "Philadelphia Naturalization Records" by P. William Filby? I would greatly appreciate a lookup for George McClasky pre 1800. Thank you for your help. Thank you one and all for the Holy Cross cemetery information. They have an extensive list of burials online but he is not one of the Kennedy's listed so I shall call them and see what transpires. http://www.interment.net/data/us/pa/delaware/holycross/index.htm Elaine
Elaine, It is highly likely that your ancestor is buried at Holy Cross; as someone else mentioned, folks who lived in Philadelphia were frequently buried there. I suggest you call Holy Cross for info; the two ladies who work there are wonderful and go out of their way to be helpful. 215-476-3656 Mary Ann Villanova Pa -------------------------------------------------- From: ""E" Sharp" <bellemarco@gmail.com> Sent: Thursday, June 03, 2010 2:11 PM To: <paphilad@rootsweb.com> Subject: [PAPhl] Holy Cross Cemetery Philadelphia > I am trying to locate the grave of John Kennedy who died 12/26/1896 > and his obit says he is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. Holy Cross cemetary is located in Yeadon, Pa. Delaware County. Yeadon is very close to Philadelphia and it was and is common for burials of people from Phila. to be buried in Holy Cross Phil Dreger On Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 2:11 PM, "E" Sharp <bellemarco@gmail.com> wrote: > I am trying to locate the grave of John Kennedy who died 12/26/1896 > and his obit says he is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. I am trying to locate the grave of John Kennedy who died 12/26/1896 and his obit says he is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. He lived at 1530 Wood Street when he died. Can someone please tell me where this cemetery is located. I checked findagrave and Interment but I don't think the Holy Cross they have listed is the right one. Can someone please enlighten me so I might write for his records. I am trying to find who else might be buried with him...like his wife....and children. Thank you. Elaine
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Carrie CROSDALE which was taken at the B. F. Reimer Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Carrie likely in her 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to her name, someone has written "wife of Ed KNIGHT" on the back of the photograph. I am hoping to locate someone from Carrie's family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place, with family. If you are a member of this CROSDALE family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Hi Dave, There is no St. Victoria Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. 841 S. Cecil St. would have been Transfiguration of Our Lord Parish, now closed. The records are held at St. Cyprian (former St. Carthage and Transfiguration combined). Location, Cobbs Creek Pkwy. at Cedar Ave. 19143. Phone-215-747-3250. I wonder what church you contacted. The closest I can think of is Our Lady of Victory, but that is at 54th and Vine and your Cecil St. address is definitely not within that church's boundaries. Tell me your mother's name. Maybe I can help.
