    3. I am an admin for a rootsweb website (not related to this Philly listserv) and received an email the other day that they permanently lost 9 or more months of listserv data from 2015 when they had server issues back in February 2016... But if we are sending and receiving these messages, then all is well with the server. Bottom line no one is asking questions... 3. If your local public library does not have HeritageQuest, and you live in the United States, most likely some other library in your state does, and in most cases, if you can prove you are a resident of that state, you should be able to get a library card, although you likely will need to walk in to get one. The way to find out which libraries in your state have HQ is use a search engine. Keywords might be: (for example) HeritageQuest databases PENNSYLVANIA If that does not work for you, then there is a forum somewhere that had a listing for sites carrying it. Although it is out of date, it still may be of value. I give links to that on the following page, as well as Dick Eastman's page about HQ: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/resources.html#library Also, while FamilySearch has the censuses transcribed, availability of images varies. In most cases now they send you off to another site that is pay to get the image.

My library still has HQ, and I use it often. It's still coming from Pro Quest, which has everything the same, including census for all years, city directories, books, and several other databases. HQ online works fine. All that changed is what it says at the top of the HQ page, and the formatting of the search page and of the results pages is a little fancier. Check with the county library. 3. I am not always as successful in getting census records from FamilySearch as I am when getting them from HQ. Don't know why, but it just IS. All of these systems, or whichever ones we can get to, potentially can provide the exact right item we need. Sometimes one system works better than another. I have added 10,000+ individuals to my database within the last year, and that's been my experience for a while. 3. Hi Lorri, As stated you can get the census at Ancestry, some are free, some you must join Ancestry to get. Familysearch has them, (free) I also find FS difficult to search on, it used to be easier. Heritage Quest is available through libraries, if you are in a large city your library probably has it available, and you can probably log on from your home computer.... very handy. Keep in mind these are indexed often over seas and the people doing the work may not read English, they just look at the letters and enter them. For instance, I looked and looked for my ancestor James Hudson who I knew lived in Philly in 1850, couldn't find him on the census. After looking at ALL the James in Philly (and there were a lot) I found him indexed as PLudson, the person reading it thought the fancy H was a PL. So be sure and think outside the box. The HQ and Ancestry seemed to be indexed by different people as I will find people on one and not the other. Investigate all avenues. Good Luck to you. 3. Lorri, Where are you located? Well, that is --I don't really need to know, but you do. If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry.com (wait on that awhile; it's expensive), then what to do is to call the county library wherever you live, and ask if they have HeritageQuest in their system, and whether or not you can access that from home. They have ALL of the census records up to 1940, for free. Just call and ask. If the phone person doesn't know, ask for a supervisor or for the Head Librarian. Even if the library only allows access AT the library itself, that's still good, and you can use their computers there to see census records, City Directories, and more. Copy these records onto a portable thumb drive ("memory stick"), and then take them home where you can look at them again. Or else, just take a notebook and pencil, and write down what you need. If the county library (or your city library) has online access for your area, you are totally Golden! Go to the library for your access number (mine here is a big long 14-number PIN they give us). They will also give you the URL that you need to access in order to find HeritageQuest (save that!!). Then at home, bookmark the page (don't forget!!), and then you can login to the system from home whenever you need to. If you are in a city which has a Family History Center (FHC), they will have the census records too --also for free. There are at least one FHC in every state and in some states, several. They can also order other records you may need, such as film reels which have other important info. Check the phone book, or google "Family History Center" + your location. Otherwise, if it's a question about people in Philadelphia, someone here will be glad to help, if you ask us ON the list. Provide enough info on your subject(s) that we can get some idea of what is needed and about what time period. Keeping our fingers crossed that your library has online access!! Meanwhile, let us know if there is something we can help with before you find out about the library. Just give us enough details to get started. Good luck & best wishes, Liz J On 5 February 2016 at 17:42, Lorri Buschmann via <[email protected]> wrote: > where can I get the census on line? thank you > ********* > Visit the threaded archives of this list: > http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PAPHILAD > ********* > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
