Dear List, In the 1870 Federal Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania it has my relative Frederich Haas living in the 19th Ward, 57 District. Unfortunately the census taken did not list the street they lived on. I have the book Philadelphia Maps 1682-1982 and I see in 1867, which would be the last redistricting prior to the 1870 Census that the 19th Ward was bounded by Germantown Ave on the West, Lehigh Ave on the North, Frankford Ave, E Norris St, and Aramingo on the East and Oxford St to the South. Does anyone know what the 57th District would be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Dottie in OH

I apologize for asking a question already answered, but I can't find it! What is the current cost and method to request an obituary look-up from the FLP? Thank you! Mary McCanney Finley

Hi Everyone, I have begun placing complete Census reels up on the site for a bunch of cities: New York, Baltimore, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Newark. The reels from 1900 are almost complete and those from 1910 are about 1/2 done. I have two machines running 24/7 doing the work. I plan to do 1900 through 1930 for these cities and to then go back and do the remaining major cities: Chicago, St. Louis, Richmond(VA), Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, ... I also have created a tool which allows anyone to add information to the searchable index for each reel. The idea is to use this to enter the address ranges and street names for every page. This will allow someone who has an address to find the census page corresponding to that address quickly. The best that exists right now is the Enumeration District <--> Street Name index at stevemorse.org . Here we will have an index which you can search on a street name. The results will show a list of pages matching the street name with the address range shown for each page. You will then pick the page you want to view, click on the link to view the page. The key is to have access to the Census page images, a tool which enables entering the information, and lots of people who are interested in helping. You can find it at http://census.donslist.net . I've also placed a choice in the SEARCH selection menu to search all reels for a state. That will make the searches much faster, but we must enter the information in the index first. In the meantime, the pages are going up on the site as fast as I can render them. Each Census page now includes a link entitled: "The Address Project: Add/Edit the Index." Clicking on this loads the tool into the upper right frame. There you can enter the address range and street name, e.g.: 245 285 Palmetto Street Or you make multiple entries if the page covers more than one street, e.g. 245 285 Palmetto Street 1010 1015 Howell Avenue Of course try to be accurate but don't worry about making spelling or other errors. It only takes a moment to load a page and enter the information and the potential value of the effort to all of us and so many others is quite large. This is a way of creating address directories from the census. I'm hoping that many of us will be interested in the project, will participate, and will provide good criticism and ideas for moving it forward. Please let me know what you think, either on the list or via email. Don Krieger Pittsburgh, PA http://DonsList.Net http://www.evendon.com akadonnew __AT__ verizon.net Everything on the site is free and permanent. Loading is very fast. Each page includes a highlighted copy/paste link which you can use for easy online citation. Please support us by letting others know about our site

You have to click on the little square icon with + or - next to the menu item. It took me a few minutes to figure that out. <<What am I doing wrong? Following Claire's instructions, either way I do it I end up on a rather empty page called "treeview example." None of the menu items on the left respond to a click. I'm feeling kinda stupid...>>

We have compiled a significant amount of information on our Allen family at ancestry.com going back to Col. Richard Allen b.1741 d.1832 in Wilkes County, NC. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and the first Sheriff of Wilkes County, NC We believe Richard's father was John Allen b.1715/16 and married Ann(e) Rhodes/Rhoads in St. John's Parish, Baltimore, MD in 1740. We earlier thought that John's lineage was traceable back to Edward Allen b.1634 in MA and also traceable to a daughter of Resolved White, a passenger on the Mayflower. When we attempted to register our lineage with the Mayflower group, we learned that it was not our John Allen that connects back to Edward Allen/Resolved White. OK, so who was our John Allen? One piece of anecdotal information we've discovered is that he was a building contractor in the city of Philadelphia, PA during the 1730-1760 period and may have died as early as 1765. Our online searches have not, so far, discovered any information to support this story. My objective is to seek ideas on where to search, online if possible, since none of us that are searching live near PA. Any guidance on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. It takes longer for some pages to load than others, wait a minute. I also noticed ..... one page was not clear enough to read as you mentioned, it happened to be on a grantor page but every grantee page I looked at was very clear and easy to read. Perhaps when scanned some of the pages are not in focus. I agree that this is not the most user friendly site I have visited, but here is what I have been able to figure out. You are first presented with the "Grantor" (the Seller) or "Grantee" (The Buyer) choices in the upper left of the screen. I found that once you click on "Grantor" or Grantee" you get a list of years underneath. The years appear to be the earliest year noted on that particular page, but each page contains a range of years. Once you click on a year, you get a list of letter codes further down the left side of the screen. Single letters appear to be listings for businesses and other corporate entities, like churches. Double letter choices are for the first letters of both the surname and the given name. So, for instance, if I wanted to search for a deed where George Locke bought some property in 1798, I would first click on the Grantee item, then select the year 1798, then scroll down until I saw the listing for LG. Once here I would click on the "+" sign beside the LG and that opens up a sub-menu listing individual pages for that selection. Clicking on one of these listings will bring up that page in the center screen. If I wanted to look for a property that George Locke sold in 1798, I would repeat all of the following, except I would start out with the Grantor list. Once the page opens up it appears to default to a "fit screen" size. Depending on your browser (I use Internet Explorer), you should have an option at the top of your screen to re-size your page. I am vision impaired, but I find that setting the size to 100% (full size) allows me to comfortably read the pages, even though some of them are poor quality scans. You also have the option of saving the page to your computer which is nice. This allows you to look at it again at your leisure without having to re-search for it. I hope this has been helpful. -geo George F. Locke Raleigh NC, USA Researching John Lock of Philadelphia abt. 1700 - 1780
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Dr. A. C. DICKINSON which was taken at the Trask Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Dr. DICKINSON appearing to be in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "father of Mary D. BEALE" and "same as portrait" as if a portrait had or was being made of the photograph. Thanks to the assistance of some DICKINSON and BEALE Family Researchers I was able to gather some additional information regarding the man in the photograph: Mary DICKINSON was b. 8 Feb 1845 in Philadelphia, PA and d. 5 Jul 1927. Mary married Dr. George Fairlamb BEALE (b. 3 May 1842 in Downington, PA and d. 29 Dec 1924 in Coatesville, PA) on 1 Feb 1866 in Chester, PA. Mary DICKINSON'S father was Alphonso C. I. DICKINSON b. 1812 in New York, NY and d. 16 Dec 1860 Mary DICKINSON'S mother was Julia Wager BAKER b. 18 Sep 1820, married to Alphonso on 26 Jul 1841, and died in Philadelphia, PA on 5 Oct 1902 1850 census of Philadelphia, PA: A. C. DICKINSON, age 38, born 1812, born PA Julia DICKINSON, age 29 Margaretta DICKINSON, age 8 Mary DICKINSON, age 6 Josephine DICKINSON, age 1 Since A. C. DICKINSON died in the 1860's the photograph is likely a photograph which the family had reproduced in the 1880's in remembrance most likely. The reference to same as portrait would suggest that they may have even been commissioning a portrait at the same time the photograph was processed as well. The photograph does appear to have an older appearance like those that were transferred from earlier photographic versions from the 1850's and 1860's. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Oh, I enlarge it all right.....looking in the 1700s and 1800s.....It's blurry, the pages aren't clear - they have black dots all over them, not white at all! And no, it's not my eyes. lol To open the files, Faith, click on the plus signs next to the files. If that doesn't work, try a different browser. Treeview is what I get, too....is that what we are supposed to see? Lynn
Faith, I, too, have had the same problem....I have Comcast, too, so don't know if that is the problem or not, I also use Firefox, but tried IE and couldn't get it either. That was 2 days ago. Yesterday when I tried, I was able to get the images for awhile, then it went to that Treeview blank page thing, then I tried another year and was able to get images again. I sure don't know why this is happening though. At one point, I rebooted my computer....but really don't know if that helped or not. Anyone else have any ideas or have been having the same problem? Barb
No, I use comcast, my cable service company.
