    3. I don't know what world you live in but I am a government employee and here's the world I live in because I am answering to you the taxpayer. I sort my own mail because we laid off any mail people we had which of course means a trip to the mail room - and when I get back I have to answer any phone calls on my message lines. If I have a request for anything - I have to go through the indexes because the vast majority of people never include the information needed to find it quickly. Once I find it in the index, I have to actually find the copy of it - and then make a copy of it. That copy costs money - as does the envelope it goes in - and the postage to mail it - by now I am at least 45 minutes into any project and that is without interrupting phone calls or any other work I may have been assigned. Then to justify the postage I have to fill out a couple of forms because you the taxpayer tells me I as a government worker I am probably wasting money. And then i have to run it all to the mail room. Meanwhile I have my normal eight hours worth of work plus the additional work I have been assigned because of layoffs etc. Right now I have the duties that used to be performed by three people. And the governments we all work for are still going broke because you the taxpayer don't want to pay for the cost of doing anything. I am not an employee of the library but it sounds all too familiar to me. Almost every governmental agency is going through the same thing. No one wants to even pay the cost of an aspirin for an employee to put up with the complaints they get. At some point genealogists and those chasing their family trees must be willing to pay the costs of maintaining the information they receive. Those costs include maintaining the building the records are stored in, the staffing for that building and the materials for indexing and retrieval. The Philadelphia Library cost seems very reasonable to me. In fact the employees should be applauded for holding the costs down as long as they did. I sure haven't found any other employer or job doing that. Jackie On 10/4/2010 7:38 PM, ltguidetti wrote: >> It's not just the postage. 2. Jo Schwartz
    3. I just spoke to the Dept of Wills about the pricing. It is neither $15 a page by mail nor $1 a page in person. If you do it by mail, there is a $15 research fee and either way, there is a $2 /pg copy fee. These rates don't make getting a [long] will cheap, but it's sure better than $15/pg. You have to be careful who you talk to there. Sometimes different people give different answers and it's also very easy to forget the specifics if you don't write it down. I've gotten wills in person many times but still call in for current pricing since one never knows what rules have been changed. I thought it was a $17 research fee at one time. Re the retrenchment at the FLP: in case anyone isn't aware of this, the newspaper department, where obits are researched, no longer has evening hours, but they are open daily and Saturday... afternoons, I think. It makes it difficult for anyone who works during the day or comes from out of town to spend much time there. As others have indicated, it's all because Philly has precious little money. jo

    3. Jo, does obtaining a will still require two visits? Also, is there a fee just to LOOK at the will? For instance, if I'm not sure I want the whole thing or have found the right one in the index, can I request they be pulled, view them, and then decide if I want copies? Thank you. --- On Mon, 10/4/10, Jo Schwartz <phillysleuth@verizon.net> wrote: > I just spoke to the Dept of Wills > about the pricing.   It is neither $15 a page > by mail  nor $1 a page in person.   If > you do it by mail, there is a $15 research fee and either > way, there is a $2 /pg copy fee.  These rates don't > make getting a [long] will cheap, but it's sure better  > than $15/pg.

    2. Actually next year we might have trouble getting them at all as the State Legislature is considering changing the access rules to make birth and death certificates impossible to get so you all need to contact YOUR state legislator if you live in Pa or to contact any state legislator if you don't but your research interests are here. I had the article put aside to quote from and to have the person's name who sponsored the bill so when I find it again, I will post it. I saw it in last week's paper - either Bucks County Courier or Philadelphia Inquirer. 3. Your email and the cost made me think....... in the 1960s I was just beginning my genealogy quest and wrote to the veteran's department in Washington D.C. hoping to find information on my G. G. grandfather. For a whole dollar I got the entire packet copied, including information on the birth of his three children and marriage. He had died at Andersonville prison and his widow had to send proof of the marriage and children! Of course, being a newbie I had no idea what a treasure this was and my luck would likely never be repeated. Good luck. 3. Those who don't live in the area or visit this library may not be aware that there have been cuts to staff, hours, and services. I noticed the amount went up about the time this happened, so it could well be the only way to continue this service, though I don't know this for certain. If you plan on visiting on Philadelphia libraries, be sure to check hours first to be sure it is open. The same goes for neighboring counties' libraries. --- On Sun, 10/3/10, joseph brady <joe60brady@gmail.com> wrote: > how come it went from $1 to $10 > ????Joe > > On Sun, Oct 3, 2010 at 6:35 PM, Larry B. <phillyhm@hotmail.com> > wrote: > > > > > Send a written request with the person's name, exact > date of death (month, > > day, year) or burial date and a stamped self-addressed > envelope. 3. Anyone else having a problem with Family Quest Beta? I tried to log on last Tuesesday but was denied access. Thinking it was because I used my old ID and password from over a year ago, I re-registered. This allowed me access. Wednesday I was denied access again, so I set up another password and was allowed access. Yesterday I was denied again. Sound familiar? I tried contacting Family Quest on their help line but haven't heard back from them. Larry B.

    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Harry KNIGHT which was taken at the P. Edward Chillman & Co. Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Harry likely in his teens or 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "Uncle" on the back of the photograph. I am hoping to locate someone from Harry's family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this KNIGHT Family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
