There was a big yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793 -- I read a book about it once. A lot of people were buried in mass graves, many at 4th and Walnut, I think. There was a story that 10,000 people had been buried on the grounds of the Meeting House at 4th and Arch, but I was unable to confirm that. 10,000 is probably too high for the total anyway, but it has turned out to be impossible to determine the number at 4th and Arch. Many victims were moved to Stephen Girard's farm at about 18th or 19th and Spring Garden, and Washington moved the capital to Germantown. But I think actual names will be hard to come by. I have been looking for information on my greatgrandparents part time when I can fit it in. I posted the following message sometime ago and a kind person told me how to access the 1880 census. I looked for my greatgrandfather there but didn't comeup with a match. I was hoping that some kind person could lookup James O'Brien in the 1900 census and 1910 census based on the information below. Thank you again for the help I have received on this site-it is greatly appreciated. "My great-grandfather died August 14, 1914 at the age of 59. At the time of his death his obit identified his wife as Catherine. They lived at 2517 W. Allegheny Ave, 38th Ward. Catherine died March 1, 1917. I have not been able to get a death certificate for her from the Department of Hearth-no record available. I was able to find James listed on the 1890 Philadelphia Directory. At that time he lived at 1716 Page Street. James was supposedly a carpenter for the Reading Railroad. I was told when my great-grandfather came to the USA from Ireland he was accompanied by 2 (?) brothers and worked in the coal mines in either Shamokin PA or more likely Shenandoah PA. James had at least 3 children. William died at 14 days 5/9/1885. Catherine, 4 months 7/31/1891. For Joseph Patrick, my grandfather, I don't have a birthdate but he was 70 years old when he died 1/1/58 which would make his birth around 1888. On Joseph's death certificate his mothe r is listed as Mary Gibbons. I'm not sure but this may or may not be correct. Possibly he had more then one wife? I would greatly appreciate it if someone who has access to the census for 1880, 1890, 1900, and 1910 please look and see if my great-grandparents are listed.

Hello List - Researching my wife's Smith family from Germantown - Daniel Smith 1803-1876 m. 22 Mar 1825 Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA to Elizabeth Mullholland 1805-1890, d/o Thomas Mullholland. The baptism records of their children may be found at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Germantown. I have researched there and found the people very helpful, although their facility was not really set up to do research. I believe there is a Pfeiffer connection to our Smith family, as this was a middle name for Daniel and two of his sons. Daniel's father may have been named Daniel also as there is a burial record at St. Michael's for an earlier Daniel Smith, but no connection evident. If anyone has a connection I would love to hear from you. Rev. John Gray, Grove City, OH
Can anyone help me find the site for deaths from Yellow Fever. It gave a list of names of those who had died between Aug and Nov. Not sure of the year, somewhere between 1793 and 1798. I had the site but have lost it. A search of google left me site less. Many thanks Elayne
I looked up 1950 N Judson Street. That neighborhood went mostly black in the 1960s, and the church would probably have moved or merged then, if not earlier. There are many, many churches (and synagogues) in Philadelphia where the enough of the congregation has moved to fancier neighborhoods or to the suburbs that there is no one left around the church, and the building has been sold to another congregation or demolished. Even in 1951, when I graduated from high school, that neighborhood was full of people from Eastern Europe, so the congregation may have gotten out still earlier. A lot of the churches had no phones, so unless you know the minister's names, you would not find them in the phone book either. If I can find a Bulletin Almanac for the period I can see when the church stopped being there (the Almanac was published every year until the early '70s by the Evening Bulletin, which went out of business itself in 1981 or 1982). I only have one from about 1971 and I can't find it. I don't have any other answers for you. Elizabeth C Staff wrote: > Elizabeth > Many thanks for your efforts.
