110 Poplar isn't there. I went by there today. Philadelphia Research
Laurie: On the 1930 census questions: -- my best guess is Wm. Jos. Fee -- James Sickle is at house number 1530. He was first married at age 21, which makes sense given the children's ages. His wife's marriage age of 38 must be a mistake by the enumerator. 18 would make sense. It seems to me he is a pipefitter for a fertilizer plant. On your 1900 census question: -- the census ED is 655, sheet 13. Address is correct. He's age 13, son of Mary Sekel, listed as a housekeeper for head of household Patrick Consadine (sp?), age 67. There are no other residents listed. On your 1920 census question: -- the census ED is 1002, sheet 5A. Address is correct. James SEKEL (indexed as SAKEL in Ancestry) is living in the home of mother-in-law Bridget Fay. Brother-in-law William Fay (19) is also present. Your James, age 33, pipefitter/shipyard, is widowed. He is listed with children William (7), James (5) and John (4). Hope this helps. Regards, Tom White Paris, France
Adolph (Edward) Eld, wife Frances Hobson Street, Philadelphia
Thank you Margaret & Tom for the help with this! As for James' wife Mary, she is his second wife, so my goal in making out the age was to get a better idea of birth date (the 2 older children are her stepchildren). One further question with my apologies for not asking it the first time: can anyone tell what street this is? I looked at pages before and after, but I cannot make out a street name. Thank you, Laurie ----- Original Message ----- I have a census page that I can't read: 1930, Philadelphia, 26th Division, 36th Ward, Enumeration District No. 51-139, Supervisor's District No. 31, Sheet No. 32B.

I am looking for the death date and cemetery of John/Johann Nagel who lived in Philadelphia in the 2nd half of the 19th century. He lived at 134 Vine Street and was a baker. He died of TB between 1876-1879. He was a Lutheran but I have not been able to find his church records. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks so much! Natalie ndburrows@verizon.net
Regina, Thanks for your information. My family ( NESSLER'S) came from Germany arriving about 1854 & settled in Philadelphia. Living on the West Coast the only way to do my genealogy is thru web sites so appreciate all the help I can get. Again, thanks for the input. Betty - I-95 goes right through this area and based on Property Assessments, it does not appear it is still standing. The addresses for the street run 147 to 173 Poplar and 2 to 48 in the block below the 100 block. It doesn't look as though 110 is still there. >From: "Betty" <bettygadabout@cox.net> >Reply-To: PAPHILAD-L@rootsweb.com >To: PAPHILAD-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [PAPHL] address >Date: Mon, 16 Jan 2006 14:01:40 -0800 > >Can anyone tell me if the house at 110 Poplar Street in Philadelphia is >still standing? >I have a picture of my grandfather's home in Philadelphia but have no idea >if it is the home on Poplar. >Thanks, >Betty > > >==== PAPHILAD Mailing List ==== >FREE: unlimited webspace! >http://freepages.rootsweb.com/ > >============================== >New! I have a passenger list from SS Haverford, arrival date is February 12, 1906. Its dark and hard to read. Also Ancestry.com has a pretty good Philadelphia passenger list. Jean
Thanks Helen. I had googled it but just can't find it. I'll try the PHL. Elayne
Ginger--re Catholic Archives--The address is: Philadelphia Archdiocesan Historical Research Center 100 East Wynnewood Road Wynnewood <PA. 19096-3001 There is a chage for the research. It is some time since I contacted them so I'm not sure of $ amount. It used to be by the hour. It is necessary to write to them. Peg
Laurie, Looks like middle name is Jos (Joseph). Can't read first name; possibly it is crossed through. I'd suggest looking for him and his mother in 1920 to hopefully read name better. Age 31 for Mary. Pipefitter and fertilizer. Hello Ginger, The Catholic archives has that record. The church is Old St. Mary's, founded 1763. It is a lovely church in the historic district of Philadelphia surrounded by a cemetery where, among others like my second great-grandmother, Commodore John Barry is interred. http://www.rc.net/philadelphia/pahrc/ is the archives website. You can download a form to send to them. I'm having a tough time locating some census images, and part of the problem is not knowing where to look. I've located James SEKEL at 4323 Osage Ave. in 1900 and then at 2709 Alter St. in 1920. Could someone please tell me the enumeration districts of each of those addresses so that I may narrow my search? Thank you, Laurie
I am needing to find out how to get the records from a Catholic Church in 1876. I only have the priest name of Reverend M. Martin and the church at 260 South 4th Street. Philadelphia. Would the Catholic Archives have this information and if so please tell me how to obtain it? Thanks, ginger in FL
I have a census page that I can't read: 1930, Philadelphia, 26th Division, 36th Ward, Enumeration District No. 51-139, Supervisor's District No. 31, Sheet No. 32B. House number 1520 is the home of William Sekel (spelled Wm Sickels), but I can't make out the head of household's name. It should be last name Fay, seems to be but spelled Fee, and I can't make out the first name. Could someone help me read this please? Just down that same page is a smudged house number for James Sickle. I can't make out hte age at first marriage of his wife Mary (his second marriage), nor am I certain that I'm reading his occupation correctly: pipefitter is clear, but the other word looks like fertilizer to me. Again, could someone help me read this please? Thanks so much! This has been a big breakthrough in my Sekel line, but I'm strugging with the handwriting and misspellings. The name is truly Sekel, rather than Sickles. Laurie
