    1. Petzelt Marriage
    2. I am trying to determine the marriage date of my great grandparents, Christopher Petzelt and Virginia Adelaide Dryden Mansfield. She was listed in the 1877 Philadelphia City Directory as Widow Mansfield living at 820 N. 8th St. He was listed as living there also. Their first child was born in September 1879 so they were probably married between 1877-1879. One source I have, which is of dubious value, says they were married on 7 May but didn't say what year. Any clues would be appreciated. Craig TenBroeck

    3. You said your father-in-law's cousin was George Straub. I don't have any info on the family, but I was wondering if you might be related to John and Alice Straub? They would have been born about 1925/1930 and lived in the Northeast Village in the 50's & early 60's. I was too young to remember, but my mom speaks of her old neighbors fondly. I have a picture of John & Alice's son, Johnny Straub when he made his 1st Holy Communion. Any connection? Debbie Yerkes Bear ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott R. 1. re: Anti-Cobden Clubs
    2. Tom Clarke
    3. Hello Barbara and readers, This question came up a couple years ago by a stamp collector who had seen an envelope with the Anti-Cobden Club return address It was sent from 1891 Philadelphia. From <http://www.cobdenclub.co.uk/about.html> : "Richard Cobden was a previous generation (d.1865) English politician who favored workers and free-trade. Cobden Clubs were begun in England [and America?] to promote his ideas. When the Civil War threatened to break out in the United States, Cobden was deeply distressed. After the conflict became inevitable his sympathies were wholly with the North, because the South was fighting for slavery. His great anxiety, however, was that the British nation should not be committed to any unworthy course during the progress of that struggle. And when relations with America were becoming critical and menacing in consequence of the depredations committed on American commerce by vessels issuing from British ports, he brought the question before the House of Commons in a series of speeches of rare clearness and...." Thus, the Cobden movement begot an anti-Cobden movement and clubs. A guess is that the Anti's were businessmen who favored high tariffs on incoming goods, hoping to reduce foreign competition, and/or those who disliked spending taxes on public arts and enrichment projects aimed at the working class. Or . . . ? Tom Clarke 1-29-06

    3. I am new to this list although I have researched numerous ancestors who are connected to the Philadelphia area. A brief list of some of the PA surnames I am researching..... spanning 1680s to 1850s with given name of oldest documented ancestor.. COATES/COATS/COTES -- Thomas (abt. 1682-1772) SISSOM/SYSOM/SISAM -- Joan (died 1729 as widow of James Clemson) PEGG -- Daniel (died 1702) ALLEN -- Samuel died 1710) LINDSEY -- Alexander (died 1729) HOLSTEIN -- Matts/Mathias (1644-1708) HULINGS -- Marcus (1686-1757) SMITH -- Nathaniel (surviving son Charles born 1816) in 1870s McINTYRE/McENTIRE -- Charles (born around 1844 Ireland, likely had brother named James) worked for the Union Pacific RR. BRADLEY -- Mary (born around 1850 Ireland, likely had sister named Ellen who married a Hurley by 1876) Would love to hear from any other list member having any resources documenting these families - especially Nathaniel Smith who is a serious brickwall. All I have been able to find is that he was a teacher in Montgomery Co. Pa in the 1810s and may have died by 1830. Thank you for any help or direction you are able to offer, Susan McIntyre

    1. SPAYD Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Ella SPAYD which was taken at the Entrekin Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Ella likely in her late teens or early 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I believe that this may be a photograph of Ella M. SPAYD, daughter of Philip & Mary A. SPAYD who were living in Jefferson, PA during the 1880 census. Those census records provide the following information regarding the family: Philip SPAYD, age 52, born in PA, a Laborer, parents born in PA Mary A. SPAYD, wife, age 47, born in PA, Keeping House, parents born in PA Salome SPAYD, son, age 18, born in PA, a Servant Ella M. SPAYD, dau, age 11, born in PA I'm hoping to locate someone from Ella's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of her family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
