    1. 1860 CENSUS QUESTION
    2. I am having a very hard time locating a relative in the 1860 census. I can find her family in 1870 in 53rd dist., ward 18. Can anyone tell me how this translates to the 1860 census? I have searched by name every which-way, and now I am thinking that I will need to start looking page by page, but Philadelphia is so HUGE! Her name is Emma Dickson (and I have checked everything from Dixon, Dickinson, Nickson and beyond...). Her age in 1870 is 18, but I think she was really born in 1855. Her father is Wm H. Dickson, age 39 in 1870. Both born in Pennsylvania). There is a woman named Mary Ann age 28, relationship unknown (too young to be Emma's mother, too old to be Wm's sister, could be a step-mother to Emma?) I am hoping that the 1860 census might have some info on Emma's mother. Thanks for the help!! Janet

    3. Hello - I am going over films at my FHC and notice a lot of Marriages in 1865 that are re-affirming a previous ceremony, and wonder if there had been a Law passed that Marriages had to be recognized by the City or County and had to be Registered.... they are using a standard form to register these marriages... thanks, Sally

    2. William Crout was a member of Ellis Post #6, Grand Army of the Republic, Germantown: Crout, William B., 22nd PA Vols., Co F; 2nd PA Cavalry, Private: Application for membership in Post 6 dated 11 October 1877 age 43; born in Germantown; residence in Germantown; occupation fireman, Philadelphia Fire Department; enlisted 5 September 1861; discharged 5 September 1864 at Petersburg, VA. 1. CROUT - HARVEY and possibly VANDEGRIFT of Philadelphia
    2. Laurie
    3. William B. CROUT, born c1831 in PA, married Rebecca (maiden name unknown). The spelling of William's age is consistent in that he does age 10 years each 10 years (unlike his wife <G>), and I've a Civil War Pension Index Record that I believe to be his as it names a widow Rebecca and a "helpless child" Mary Ella (they had a child named Mary Ella, sometimes named Ella in the census). Using census reports, it appears that his parents may be William CROUT and Margaret. Rebecca's name varies from census to census (Reba., Rebbeca, Rebeca) as does her age (in 1920 she's 64, in 1910 54, in 1900 38, in 1880 24). She is the mother to 3 or 4 children (that number also varies), and it is their daughter Virginia that I'm most interested in. In the 1880 census, a Clara V. VANDERGRIFT, single, age 18, is living with William and Rebecca with relationship given as sister-in-law. I've searched VANDEGRIFT but have not found Rebecca with this last name (only a hunch using this census). Virginia CROUT married Charles HARVEY c1901 in Philadelphia, PA. Virginia and Charles had one child, a son named Whitman HARVEY, born Feb 1907 and died 1977. I believe the 1900 census report, which lists Rebecca's children (she's the head of household) as Ella, Pennsylvania, and Wm. B. should read Ella or Mary Ella, *Virginia*, and Wm B. I cannot find a census record for Virginia HARVEY or Rebecca CROUT in 1930; each is widowed. Nor have I found a census record for 1860 for William CROUT. If anyone connects to this family or has any knowledge of them, I'd love to hear from you. I've just begun researching this line, using mostly directories and census reports to date; there is virtually no family history that's been passed down so I need to rely on this type of record.

    2. Laurie
    3. Hello all. I'm trying to find, so far without success, Virginia CROUT Harvey, widow to Charles HARVEY. In the Polk's Philadelphia City Directory, she is living at 232 Church La in Germantown. However, she is not at that address in the census. What year was the 1930 directory printed? Was the date gathered earlier and published in 1930, or was the data gathered in 1930 and printed the same year (which would be a mighty big task, I'd think)? In directories in other cities, they are begun up to 2 years prior to publication. Thanks! Laurie
