    1. Re: [PAPHL] 1840 and 50 Census locations
    2. Hi, I'm trying to track down the elusive GGGrandfather. I found him in Lower Dublin in 1850 and I found the same "name" in Pine Ward in the 1840 census'. As I understand neither of these areas are there anymore. Jacqui

    3. I'm not familiar with the geography of Philadelphia, but from my Civil War naval research, League Island was the site of (or near) the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Ann Good Morning, Ann, From the addresses you give: Race Street, 874 Franklin St and 733 N 7th St are all within a few blocks of each other. If you are familiar with "City Blocks" Then, 3534 N Warnock St is aprox 28 City Blocks North of the area where the other houses are. It seems to me that the logical church would be St Michael's German Lutheran Church, SE corner of 5th and Cherry Streets. This would put it about 3 or 4 blocks from all three of the above addresses. (Cherry St runs East and West as does Race Street and Franklin and 7th Street runs North and South like 5th Street does). The whole area had been torn down to make way for the Independence Hall/Liberty Bell building. (I will be on 4th Street and will drive up 5th St and try to get a few pictures of the area today for you.) If St Michael's is their church then I have a picture of it that I will send. Kate

    3. Paul, Check the rules of the cemetery before you spend your money. Many cemeteries, and I suspect Holy Cross is among them, will not allow you to do that. It may seem harsh, but they have to set rules in order to maintain the grounds. 3. Just for what it's worth, I would phone the police dept and ask them. I know it may be long distance but it will work better than anything else. Unless you have an email address. Thoes seem to be working pretty good these days. 2. Lower Dublin Twp. ended when the city and county consolidated in 1854. Many townships, districts and boroughs simply disappeared. Some township and borough names remain as neighborhood names: Frankford, North Liberties, Germantown, Kingsessing and Roxborough are examples of names that have remained. Some that have disappeared are Lower Dublin, Moreland, and Bristol Twp., Philadelphia. Philadelphia Research

    3. This is interesting. What map did you find this on? What year? I grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and never heard of Lower Dublin, so it must have gone out of use before the 1940's anyway. Where I lived was just being built up in the 1920's and 30's, except for Holmesburg, which goes back to the 1700's, and Torresdale. One possiblity is that Lower Dublin referred to a section west of the Boulevard -- sort of where Wilson Junior High is. I lived on Frankford Avenue as a child, just south of Cottman, then we moved north to Holmesburg. Elizabeth C Sndtenterprises@aol.com wrote: >They were far from each other. 3. I think Upper Dublin and Lower Dublin are both in Montgomery County. I would guess the distances are 10 to 20 miles, but I don't know what you mean by Spring Garden (which is a street that goes from the Delaware River west almost to city limits -- it is not a place to my knowledge) nor by Pine Ward. Pine is another street that goes for miles. I have never heard wards referred to by name, only by number.
