I am on the Beecher surname list (and there is a distant relation to the Famous beechers) But this is actually my Norcini Kimes line not the Beechers. Original message: Hi Dorothy, How does the poem "song of the Pilgrims" start out? Regina The poem is unfortunately cut short, with a notation stating it is continued on the next leaf, which dreadfully must not to have been rescued with the rest of the journal. Here is the verse I have: "Song of the Pilgrims" The breeze has swelled the whitening sails; The blue waves curl beneath the gale, And boarding with the wave and wind, We leave old England's shores behind:- Leave behind our native shore, Homes and all we loved before. The deep may wash, the winds may blow; The storm spread out its wings of wo (sic), Till sailor's eyes can see a shroud, Hung in the folds of every cloud; Still, as long as life shall last, From that shore we'll speed us fast. For we would rather never be, There dwell where mind cannot be free, But bows beneath a despot rod,... Dot Dresher, PA

I recently acquired 2 pages that appear to be from a journal. There are 5 poems written on these pages. They are each signed William CARTWRIGHT, Philadelphia , with dates between July and October 1832. I am not related to the CARTWRIGHT family, but would like to find out who this William CARTWRIGHT is. The one poem states under its title, "Song of the Pilgrims", "Written 1823". (I'm guessing this might be a hint as to when William came to the USA as it talks about leaving "old England's shores behind".) Titles of the 5 poems: "Concluded", "Hope", "The Horse", "To Washington" and "Song of the Pilgrims." Any info would be appreciated. Dot Dresher, PA Two of the shorter poems: (these seem somewhat morbid in content.) "Concluded" What is life without liberty I oft have said; She sweetens pale poverty's pittance of bread; But these chains and a prison extort a deep sigh, My heart sinks within me; I languish to die! Farewell, all my friends, now unwilling to own, That such a vile outcast you ever have known; Oh! that pang - but 'twas due to my children and wife; Oh! pity and pardon a prisoner for life. "Hope" Hope! ah 'tis but the silver spray, That dances on the wave; The mountain mist that floats away; A rainbow smile - a meteor ray- It's only home - the Grave! William Cartwright Philada, Pennsylvania July 9th 1832
This is semi genealogy related, but I didn't know where else to turn....Here is the problem..... In the 1950's my husbands grandmother Ruth (last name of Kimes, Norcini, Jeanette, and now we find out Stankawitz) took out an insurance policy on my husbands mother Delores A. Beecher (Nee: Norcini). Ruth died in Jan 1974 (in Philly....Temple Hospital) under the name Jeanette (when Mr.. Greg Jeanette died it was found out that Ruth and Greg were never married and she was kicked out of his home by his family and left with nothing but his name....) in July 1995 Delores Beecher (mom) died at our home in Quakertown,Pa, Since we never knew about this policy it sat for years, last Dec we received a letter saying we may be eligible for it (it's amounts to over $4,000). We did what we were told and contacted Prudential who sent us a form to fill out and send in to the state, Now the state is telling us we have to prove that Ruth Stankawitz (the name on the policy) and Ruth Jeanette (the name on the death cert) are the same woman.....But we didn't even know she ever went by the name Stankawitz until this letter in Dec, we have NO IDEA who Mr.. Stankawitz was or is, and obviously no way to prove that she is the same woman.......I would appreciate ANY ideas on how to pursue this! Thanks!!!! ~Dolly Beecher http://home.comcast.net/~cdbeech/
Someone on the list was asking about this and I got a bit of info from a freind and where to look for it on the web. Tell your friend to contact http://www.PhilaAthenaeum.org/. They are a very large repository of info on the old bldgs. of Philadelphia. I saw that she contacted many institutions but I did not see this one on her list. Also, I checked all my volumes of Watson's Annals of Philadelphia ( up to 1909) and I found nothing for North Exchange, Temperance Hall, Our House, Military Hall or John Vasey Wanda ----- Original Message ----- From: <bmengini@juno.com> To: <PAPHILAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 07, 2006 9:56 PMSomeone Subject: [PAPHL] Census Look Up > Hello... > > I am researching Lottie Ritter, maiden name Lewis. Hi: I've got a Jacob Harter, by 3 census say born: 1800 in Virginia. Could be John Jacob Harter. Married and had kids in the 1820's in Indiana. I have from there to present, (ME) !!! I person knowledgeable on Harters suggests, he came from a family whos parents, grandparents came from P.A.!! Are there any Harter lines that Jacob might fit into, being born 1800, in Virginia??? Thanks for your time! Rodd In Minnesota
Hello: I am trying to locate the marriage of JEREMIAH/JERRY CRONIN, b. 30 March 1887 to MARY CUMMINGS, b. 8 May 1887. It seems they both came from Ireland in different years (1908 & 1910), but, I believe they both came through Philadelphia. The 1930 Census for SF, CA puts their date of marriage in 1912. They would have both been abt. 18 years old. They were both Catholic also. I appreciate any information or direction you may have to offer. Warm wishes, Judy --------------------------------- Yahoo! Looking for anyone in the area with interest or knowledge of the following surnames. I have just about run out of luck with this side of the family: Agnello (agnella, agniello, vanella) Ciraola (mary?) I believe her maiden name was agnello/a Comdico (comedico, comadeco) I am specifically looking for information for the parents of Michael Agnello and Millie Comdico. Michael was born in Italy in about 1887. He is in the 1910 census with Millie and both are living with her parents Domenick and Teresa Comadeco. He immigrated to America in 1900 according to one census report. I have found them in the 1910, 1920, and 1930. I have specifically been looking for Michael's death cert. info. I know he died at 73 years of age in the year 1960. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Philadelphia. Mary Ciraola was the owner of the grave. I can't find him on ancestry in the SSDI or anywhere else. I believe the only way to get his parent's names is to get that certificate and until I get those names, I can't move on with this end of my tree. I cannot find his name on the immigration sites either. I guess my question is: Is there anyone who can help me find his death cert. or tell me how to do it myself? Thanks so much, Laura Agnella

I just recently got the records for someone who was in Eastern State from 1874-1886. There was an overlap of record keeping, at least for the years I was looking at which made it a great find. Those records are at the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg. If you go their website at: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/holdings.htm?secid=31 It will take you to the section for Department of Justice Records. You want to look at Record Group 15 and it will show you which records and years of their holdings. I do remember that the year 1907 was included in the records I looked at. Walt Lafty Phila. Dyott St., in Kensington (Fishtown), according to Moak's book. I am pretty sure that intersection no longer exists. Sndtenterprises Genealogical and Historical Research
Hi, I checked and, the name did not come up . I haven't ever seen anyone's name come up that was listed in a prison. But then again......I have no idea as to where these places are or, what anyof them are called. I just last week found a distant family member was to have served time - 3 years - and have not found anything.
