Birth records from that date are at the Philadelphia City Archives (there is a Web page). Births were supposed to be recorded with the city from 1860 to 1906. There are no birth"certificates" as we know them, just a notation. However, unless the child was born with a doctor's assistance, not a common situation, it is doubtful that there is any record. I spent some time at HSP today, and I looked up the Upper Germantown Burying Ground records (the register is part of the holdings there), but I noted two things: (1) there was a significant change about 1857 that seems to give ownership to someone else, and (2) the records drop off almost completely about then. The record I was looking for is for William B. CROUT who was buried there; what I did find was that he paid for the right to be buried there. Also, when the change took place, there was a notation that the cemetery would be called Axe's. Any idea how I can get the actual record? Is the cemetery still in operation today? Many thanks!
Hello fellow listers! I'm new to the list and living in Kentucky. Is there anyone who is willing to check for and obtain copies of birth certs for me??? I'm looking for the following: Edgar Alfred Gillinder, born Philadelphia, abt. 1864 Blanche Gillinder (possibly Ella Blanche), born Philadelphia, abt. 1866 Parents of both Edgar and Blanche were William Thynn Gillinder & Elizabeth Emery Gillinder. Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I will gladly reimburse for any costs! Thanks much! Claudia Pell-Salvatore
You are all such great helps! Okay, here's the full info: Edward A. Moore January 16, 1892 Born at 2271 Michan St. Dr. W. M. Alrich 5560 Main St. Father: Alex Moore Occupation: Milk Dealer Mother: Sarah By 1900 the father had died and mom and son were living in the 22nd ward on Duval St., per the census. Now that you mention it, I have always gotten an actual handwritten record from the archives - this is the first time I've gotten anything typed like this. I guess I could write for the original, it just seems weird that they didn't send it to me in the first place. In any case, I appreciate the detective work! The clerk at the Archives probably misread the writing on the original record and typed what he thought it said. Try to get a copy of the original record. Sndtenterprises Genealogical and Historical Research
Can you get a photocopy of the original certificate from the Archives? If so, perhaps someone could help you decipher it. There's no record of a Michan Street in Moak's book on street name changes. I am trying to find a marriage date for Thomas Ferguson and Dorothy Katherine Balcom. Their son (my grandfather), Wallace Ferguson, was born in Philadelphia on March 15, 1927. I am not positive where te wedding took place, but want to start in Philadelphia. I don't know which city department keeps records for this period, or how to request. If anyone is able to do a lookup, I am willing to pay reasonable fees (reproduction, etc). Jason
Don't know if this will help or not, but I had been looking for my great grandfather for years. He had 2 sons with my great grandmother, then dropped off the face of the earth. I finally found him in the 1900 census, serving in the Spanish American War. He apparently left the Philippines and settled in San Francisco. There he "hooked up" with a lady, who he claimed he married a week before the great earthquake and fire. Of course there were no records available, because the had been burned in the great fire. He also claimed that he had never been married before. I highly doubt that he ever married the new wife. I sent away for his pension record and confirmed that it was him. My great grandmother remarried and never saw him again. A kind person in San Francisco took a picture of his tombstone for me, so that sort of closed the book on him. I've now learned that some strange things happened during that time period. Also, if a person is missing, find out if there was a war during their time of disappearance. You might just get lucky, following that route! Lorraine
Hello Michael, Keep in mind that someone other than Margery composed her obit. Most likely it was a FARRELL. Your grandmother could have been omitted due to oversight or spite. My brick wall is beginning to come down, but it's slow going on this one. I have an ancestor whose marriage I've now confirmed, who is listed in the directories in the time frame of 1887 - 1894. He seems to just disappear after 1894, his wife is listed as married in the 1900 census but widowed in 1910. I have not found him in Philly, but I find someone with the same name, age, birth place in another state married. One possibility that hadn't occurred to me before is divorce or annulment. Would there be a record if this was the case? If so, where would I look? Also, for a husband who seems to simply disappear in this time frame, where would you look and what other possibilities should be entertained?
