Please note that I was focusing on the 708 Sutherland James & Rose Finnegan and their sons who were glass blowers according to the 1880 census, so I did not list all Finnegans, and knowing another researcher is looking up a Rose Finnegan as well, I thought I'd pass this on to all in the event it helps others. 1882 Gopsill's, page 522 Finnegan James, clerk, h 807 Lebanon Finnegan James, clerk, h 533 N 11th Finnegan James, mariner, h 807 S Front Finnegan James, watchman, h 925 Ernst Finnegan James, watchman, h 708 Suntherland av Finnegan James Jr., glassblower, h 708 Sutherland av Finnegan James J, bartender, h 1821 Lee Finnegan Patrick, glassblower, h 708 Sutherland av 1884 Gopsill's, page 536 Finnegan James, glassblower, h 708 Sutherland av Finnegan Patrick, glassblower, h 708 Sutherland av Finnegan Philip, glassblower, h 2146 Webster Finnegan Rose, wid John, h 2949 Anderson Finnegan Rose, widow, h 708 Sutherland av 1885 Gopsill's, page 588 Finnegan James, laborer, h 2921 Anderson Finnegan James, laborer, h 708 Sutherland av Finnegan Patrick, glassblower, h 708 Sutherland av Finnegan Rose, widow, h 2951 Anderson 1886 Gopsill's, page 565 Finnegan, Philip P, glassblower, h 2207 Montrose Finnegan Philip P, glassblower, h 2609 Christian Finnegan Rose, widow, 2951 Anderson [no James, Patrick, or Rose from Sutherland av this year] 1887 Gopsill's, page 562 Finnegan James, glassblower, h 2829 Alter Finnegan Patrick, glassblower, h 2829 Alter Finnegan Rose, widow, h 2829 Alter [no Rose of 2951 Anderson this year]
My Mary FINNEGAN Sekel research is progressing, but her age is all over the place, making a birth record a real challenge. What I have on her (actual records) is two marriage records now: one is unclear with the age either 21 or 29 as it's smudged and faded, the other through the church doesn't mention her age, but the other facts all add up so that I am certain she is "mine". I also have her cemetery record, death notice, and death certificate. In December 1910, she is said to have been 41 on the death records. I have the 1900 census which gives a birthdate of May 1871, age 29, married 15 years, and the 1910 census which gives an age of 55. Her parents on death records are listed as the late James FINNEGAN and Rose FITZPATRICK. I've been unable to locate her one son's birth record; he was born in 1887. Here's what I've got to show the tentative connection between Mary and Rose & James FINNEGAN. 1880 Census, 708 Sutherland Avenue Peter FITZPATRICK, James FINNEGAN and his wife Rose, James' sons Patrick and James (both glass blowers) and his daughter Mary A. (23, laundress), and his LARNEY grandchildren (their father died in NJ, not sure about their mother but their mother was Alice). ***Annie LARNEY is most likely the witness named in Mary's marriage record, so this record seems to be my Mary in many ways, though the middle initial is wrong and the age is off (or all other ages are off!) One thing to note though: if she was truly 23 here, then the age is a pretty good match with her marriage record. In 1882, I have located the above in the city directories: Peter FITZPATRICK is a laborer living at 708 Sutherland; James & James & Patrick FINNEGAN are all at 708 Sutherland (occupations match census). In 1884, the entries are the same with one exception: one James is gone, an entry for Rose FINNEGAN, widow, 708 Sutherland is in its place, and I've located a July 1883 death record for James FINNEGAN who was age 70 and residing at 708 Sutherland. In 1884, I'm a bit puzzled, for there is a Peter FITZPATRICK at 708 Sutherland as well as James & James & Patrick FINNEGAN at 708 Sutherland (no Rose, widow, but one too many James'). Then in 1886, I'm further confused as none of those at Sutherland are on Sutherland any longer; they are all on different streets, with the 1887 directory placing the FINNEGANS on 2829 Alter Street (Rose, widow, & James & Patrick). If Peter FITZPATRICK is still living, he is no longer living with this family; I'm not finding a good match for him and didn't get a chance to look up his death record. Rose FINNEGAN is listed in the directories for the last time in 1893, and I've not yet checked for her death record either. Now, in 1887, I have my first SEKEL entry: Max SEKEL is by this time married to Mary FINNEGAN, and they are residing at 2902 Alter. Two big questions, if you're still with me: was there a street name change? Sutherland to Alter? Or did they all just move? The other is: how would you establish a connection between Mary FINNEGAN Sekel and the above elder James & Rose FINNEGAN, for I am seeing similarities that make me believe this may be the correct family. I'm thinking of checking all births for Mary FINNEGAN (who might also according to one marriage record be Miriam Elizabeth) from 1855 through 1868. I've already checked 1869 through 1872 with no matches. Every time I think I've "found" her, I then discover I'm wrong with the exceptions of those items listed at the start, and even they aren't consistent.
I'm coming to Philly this summer and would like to find a couple of old store signs to photograph for the family history I am writing. They are... Unity-Frankford Abbotts Dairies (or Abbotts Ice Cream) Williams Restaurant (in Frankford) Greens Cafeteria (downtown) They can be either actual signs, photographs of signs, or just printed logos. Any suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated. Larry B.
Can anyone help me further on this family? The 1870 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 54th District 18th Ward, taken on the 20th of June shows a Michael Shields, 27 years of age and wife Mary, 22 years of age with one child, Maggie age 3/12. The 1880 census for Philadelphia -Film FHL #1255104 National Archive film T9-1184 Page 130B shows a Michael Shields age 35, wife Mary age 31, daughter Maggie age 10, son Daniel age 7, and a sepson [???]son Michael age 3, and cousin John James age 25. There is a Michael Shields listed in the 1900 census of Philadelphia, PA taken on June 11 in the 36th Ward of Enumeration District #936. This Michael Shields, street paver, is living on Penrose Street and is listed as born in March 1850 in Ireland and married for 32 years. This doesn't work out as it shows his wife as Mary, born December 1844 and born in Pennsylvania. It shows him living in the United States since 1870 and 30 years. The years married and years in this country don't work out if she was born in Pennsylvania, but the census have a lot of incorrect numbers. I do believe this to be the correct Michael Shields as our ancestor. This census shows Michael's father and mother born in Ireland. Mary's father born in Prussia [now Germany or Poland] and her mother born in Ireland. Two children are listed in this census. Daisy M., daughter born October, 1886 in Pennsylvania and a son John J. born June, 1883. Mary is shown as having seven children with four still living in 1900. The 1910 census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania taken on April 18th on Passjunk Ave?? next is Jackson Street shows a Michael Shields age 65, married 43 years, born in Ireland and coming to the United States in 1866 and Naturalized [this would help the data from the 1900 census since his arrival date to this country would explan the marriage of 32 years] . His wife is Mary A. born in Pennsylvania, age 62, having gave birth to seven children, with three living. The rest of the family in this household are Daniel, son, age 37, married 6 years; daughter Mary E. Miller, age 27, married 8 years with three children, two living; a son in law, Frank Miller age 27; Marie Miller, niece, age 7; John Miller, nephew, age 3; and John J. Shields, son, age 25. The father, Michael's occupation is General Contractor. The son in law, Frank Miller is a cement contractor. In looking for a Michael Shields in the 1920 census Index, I was unable to find a Michael Shields, so I looked up Frank Miller, his son in law and in the household in the previous census. I find the Frank Miller family and living with them or adjacent is a Daniel Shields age 77, widowed and coming to the US in 1866, naturalized it looks like 1876?, with son John age 48 and son Michael age 35. I believe this to be the family with the names wrong. I think Daniel should be Michael and Michael, Daniel. This was taken on January 5th 1920, Enumeration District 809, Sheet 2A, Ward 26. A phone call to the Holy Cross Cemetery in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, located about five miles from Philadelphia, phone number 1-610-626-2206 made on January 10th 2005, informed that Margaret C. Shields Black was buried in Section 13, Range 10, Lot 52 on December 12th 1907. Also listed in this lot are Michael Shields, age 20, December 10 1907; baby, Margaret Zennie buried on August 16th 1916; and Michael Shields, age 76, buried August 22nd 1925.
I am searching for 2000 block of South 7th St. in 1870. Please tell me what Ward this location was in 1870? Thanks, Dennis
Hi Bill, I also went to Frankford, but not until 1960 to 1964. It seems they also had a good football team way back then. It was a good team every year I was there. If you went to Frankford in the 1950's did you take Drivers Ed.? My grandfather taught Drivers Ed at Frankford for some years but had retired by the time I got there. His name was Frank Bauerle. Do you or anyone, by any chance remember him? Hello list, Could someone tell me where 2569 Trenton Ave in 1890 was located in reference to 4181 Salem St. in 1900. I know nothing about Philly except that is where my grandparents were born and my great grandparents lived after coming from Germany and Ireland. Need a little help here. Thanks Ann -- Ann Brown " Cookie"
Hi List, I hope someone can help.. I am looking for Thomas McClaren b May 1848 married to Elizabeth Lipping in 1872 both born in Ireland. The 1900 Census has him immigrating in 1869 at 21 yrs of age. There is just an x in the block next to Elizabeth's name so I don't know when she came over. They had 3 daughters I am sure of as I have pictures of them. Ann who went by Annie and Elizabeth who went by Lizzie and married Louis Hyser and my ggrandmother Theadocia b.1874 who married James Stevenson and is in her own family in 1900. There is an Orin J. b Apr 1887 on the 1900 census as well. In the 1910 census it says she had 14 births with 4 living at that time. Perhaps these 4. I was told that they were on the 1880 Census as McGarnan but can not find them. In both the 1900 and the 1910 census they were at 4181 Salem Street in Philly. Would love to find Elizabeth's parents or find them in 1880 or 1870 census. Any help appriciated. -- Ann Brown " Cookie"
Would NARA have passengers lost at sea? My ggm came from Ireland with a brother who supposedly died on the boat/washed overboard during a storm. Is there a particular place t o look for those lost at sea, not particularly seamen? Thank you so much. Patty Giroult
If you have the name of the person who you are looking for you could pull them up on www.ancestry.com - they have the passenger lists there. If they died at sea it so states on the manifest. 3rd Ward and I don't know the boundaries of 10th district...St. Philip Neri and St. Paul and possibly St. Teresa of Avila. Do you have an address or the boundaries of the 10th district? 15th Ward would most likely be St. Francis Xavier, Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul or Gesu. Again, I don't know the boundaries of 10th district.
