I am not Catholic so I don't know the parish names. The only Catholic parish that I know is Ascension, in Kensington, where I grew up. We live in East Germantown, near Nicetown. Nicetown is named for the Nice family (originally de Neuss), early settlers who owned what is now Nicetown. Gene Stackhouse in Germantown Heights, President Emeritus, Germantown Historical Society. What a splendid explanation of neighborhood boundaries! Thank you Gene. I was born and raised in Philadelphia (West End, now Cobbs Creek neighborhood, St. Carthage) and allowed to take public transportation into "the city" while still in grammar school. Yet, Nicetown, Ogontz, etc. were as foreign to me as Louisiana! Of course, if you had written Nicetown is in St. Stephen's parish it would help :-) Mary McCanney Finley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Stackhouse" <genestackho[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 17, 2014 7:55 PM Subject: Re: [PAPhl] Where is Nicetown? > > The boundaries of Philadelphia neighborhoods are often not universally > agreed upon. Hi everyone If there is someone out there who has a membership to genpa.org I would certainly be very grateful for a look up. Thank you in advance if there is anyone out there! Philadelphia County - Mayor's Marriages - 1856 - 1885 Please see if there was a marriage between John BAIRD and Margaret HAMILTON performed February 10, 1860. If so if you could provide me with the info there it would be a God send. John and Margaret were my 3nd great grandparents. Thank you and happy hunting! Ella
The boundaries of Philadelphia neighborhoods are often not universally agreed upon. There are no "official" boundaries to the Nicetown-Tioga area, but some possible boundaries are: Wingohocking Street to the northeast (beyond which lies Ogontz);Roberts Avenue to the northwest (beyond which lies Germantown);Allegheny Avenue and the SEPTA rail tracks to the south (beyond which lie Allegheny West and Glenwood); andOld York Road to the east (beyond which lies Hunting Park). This makes Wayne Junction station the northernmost tip of Nicetown-Tioga. While indexing Philadelphia county will testators I came across one place name... Nicetown Where is it in Philadelphia county? This name kept showing up in 1810s records. W. David Samuelsen
I was hoping that Elmers obit would give me his other siblings as we suspected Ida was his sister. Also, Charles had a sister named Lillian who would have been Elmers half sister. She is listed as a daughter of John and Anne in the 1870 census at 1 year old. In 1880 she is listed as their granddaughter. Do you have any idea if she is Elmer's sister? Also thought that maybe Harry listed as 7 in the 1870 census could also be a grandchild to John and Ann as opposed to a son.
Laurie, The Research Desk at the Philadelphia Library will look up to 3 death notices at a time if you provide the date of death. The cost was $10 the last time I used them: [email protected] Regards, Mary

I am trying to find an obituary for my great grandfather Elmer E Stalcup he died 29 April 1931 in Philadelphia Pa. Elmers parents divorced and he was raised by his grandparents and given their last name. I am hoping to establish the relationship between Elmer and his half brother, (Charles Russell) who openly claimed each other. Charles birth record lists his parents names as Lewis W & Rachel Russell. Their marriage record lists her maiden name as Stalcup. Neither Elmer or Charles informant listed their mothers name on their death certificates at the time of their deaths. Charles second wife did list Elmer's daugher (my grandmother) as his niece in his obituary. Elmer passed before Charles. I am hoping it will list more relatives names.

Lorri: He was probably living with a relative, possibly a daughter who was married with a different last name. Hello, We need to keep in mind that usually the people who index these census records live over seas and have no idea of common names or spellings in the USA. I searched for a relative on the 1850 census, James Hudson, who died in Philly in 1858 and had lived there all of his life. I knew his approx. birth year and ended up doing a search of ALL the James born in that time frame, with no surname..... yes, there were hundreds! But there he was, he had been indexed as James Pludson, and sure enough when I looked at the census image it did look like a capitol P l. So be creative and as Winston Churchill said "never give up, never, never NEVER!!!". Good luck!!
