Here is a site with newspapers from Philadelphia: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers It only covers up to 1922, but it's free to use. When was this? Perhaps someone else has access to the notice and can help out. Many of the newspapers have come online, often free to use from home with a library card depending upon the library. Others are free to anyone, but there are fewer of those. It depends on the paper and time frame. -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 2/10/15, Carole Cross via <[email protected]> wrote: Would someone tell me how I can order a marriage notice from the Philly Public Ledger (I have the specific date & name). Hi Lorri It might be well nigh on impossible o ever be really sure what her correct surname was. I have friends whose surname is Burilin but there is no such name historically. They went from Ireland to Liverpool (England) in the 1840s or 50s and were illiterate so their name was probably Burlin or Barlin but if you imagine it pronounced with an Irish accent you can see how it became Burilin They kept the name anyway. Hi Lorri, It can be so difficult searching for a name like this... a couple of hints. Do you know her birth year? If so you could actually go on to a search site like ancestry and enter first name Ellen, birth year (you should do the 3-5 year range if that is an option) and birthplace... Ireland. Everyone in Philly on that census with the name Ellen, born in Ireland and the birth year you enter will come up.... yes it's a long shot and could be hundreds but you can browse through and hopefully find her. The other thought is if you know any children or relatives she may have lived with look for them on the census. I had a similar situation and was unable to find a ggg grandfather who I know was born and died there, by doing the above search by James and birth year, I came up with him. James Hudson, but he was listed as James Pludson, you can see how someone not familiar with old hand writing or English could confuse a fancy H with a P L and keep in mind most of these census indexes are completed over seas where English is a second language. Good Luck and let us know what happens!! I have found that my great grandmother, Charlotte Broderick, died at St Joseph Hospital on July 14, 1948 and was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on July 17,1948. How do I get information on where her grave is located and who else is interred there? I live in California. Jo-Ann
Why not call the cemetery office? Ask for the section, range, and lot. http://www.archphila-cemeteries.org/cemeteries/holysep.htm They may give you info on everyone else in the plot. If not, with the section, range, and lot info, you can get a free report from the Catholic Cemeteries Office (you can email Veronica Johnston) http://www.archphila-cemeteries.org/contact/contact.htm Once you have names and dates, you can get related death certificates (up to 1966?? Sorry, brain fade and I can't get online to verify end date) on Ancestry, and obituaries (up to 1922 if in the Inquirer) on GenealogyBank. Hope that helps. Joseph Ashton b ca 1740 in Lower Dublin, Phila Co m Rebecca Northrop b ca 1740 in PA on 3 Mar 1760. They had 6 known children between 1760-1773/4 (when Rachel died): Joseph, Rachel, Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah and Isaac. These names come from his 1786 will. NOTHING is known about any of the daughters except they were obviously alive in 1786. Does anyone have any information? I have pretty much exhausted resources without any luck. Any help appreciated!
I've "rescued" two old photographs which I believe both belong to the HERRSCHAFT Family of Pennsylvania. The first is one of George HERRSCHAFT which was taken at the William C. Withers Studio in Philadelphia, PA. The photograph is dated 25 Dec 1905 and indicates that George is 4 months old at the time. The photograph is gifted to "Louise" from "Mrs. HERRSCHAFT". The second photograph is not identified, however, it was taken at the same studio and at the same time (background, draping, chair, etc.) and is of a woman likely in her 30's. I'm guessing that it is George's Mother, but I don't know that for sure. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding George and his family: George G. HERRSCHAFT was b. 3 Jan 1905 in Missouri. George appears to have married twice though I don't know in which order, one wife was Helen ? (1912-2007) and the other was Grace E. OSBORNE (1907-2002) who he married in California. George and Helen had two children including a son, Paul C. HERRSCHAFT (1935-2009). George died in Aptos, CA on 29 Dec 1977. Census records provide the following details: 1910 census of Norristown, PA: Charles HERRSCHAFT, age 59, 2nd marriage 26 years, born Germany, parents born Germany, to USA 1873, Owns Barber Shop Carrie HERRSCHAFT, wife, age 37, 2nd marriage 26 years, 2 children/2 living, born Germany, parents born Germany, to USA 1887 (doubt she was married at age 11) George HERRSCHAFT, son, age 5, born MO Leo P. HERRSCHAFT, son, age 3, born PA Elizabeth HERRSCHAFT, Mother, age 88, widow after 60 years, 8 children/7 living, to USA 1865 I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that the photographs can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
The image of this birth record is available, as FS indicates: "To signed-in members of supporting organizations." This means you can't see this online from your home computer, but you still CAN see it in a couple of different ways --at one of the "supporting organizations." So either (1) go to your local library which should have this record (through Ancestry.com) --Maybe-probably! Call your local or county library first & talk to a librarian --this is part of their job, and they enjoy connecting people with the resources they need!. Someone at your local or county library will know. If the first person you reach on the phone doesn't know what you are asking about, then ask to be connected to a Reference Librarian. Or else (2) make a visit your closest FHL Library. They will certainly have an image of this record. Call them first to make sure of their working hours and their location. The librarians there will be able to give you directions on how to find this, but on their computers, the same search from which you arrived at this record at home should easily take you to the record (and image!) you want. If you want to save this image for your own personal use at home, take a USB drive ("memory stick" or "thumb drive") with you. Or... this could probably be printed on-site on 8.5x11 printer paper. But I strongly recommend getting the digital image if you can --it's easy to do! Once back home, you can save this image to an appropriate place in your own computer. After that, you will be able to open it with an appropriate program which your computer undoubtedly has. I don't know if either of these two are YOUR Robert THOMPSON but there are 2 baptismal records in Philadelphia Births book by John T. HUMPHREY that could be your Robert: The first was born 17 June 1770 and is the son of David and Mary THOMPSON (baptized at 1st Presbyterian Church) The second was born 25 May 1779 and the parents are John and Catharine THOMPSON (baptized at 2nd Presbyterian Church) Joan PS: I don't see any Lutheran baptisms for any THOMPSONs in Phila. at this time. Hi All Just wondering if anyone would be able to visit the reading room of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Locust St, Philadelphia? I am interested in various papers and documents of my ancestor, Abel HUMPHRYS, who lived in Philadelphia and Northumberland from 1796 until 1808 when he died in Havana. (He traded merchandise between the two cities.) If anyone is able to help me, I have the references to the papers from the small collections of the McAllister library. I live in New Zealand (I know, I know, Hobbit country.but we don't all have hairy feet!) so it's a little difficult to do it myself. Dorothy Gaunt
I have been having a issue trying to discover data for an uncle, PATRICK JOSEPH O'Brien who was born around 1924, the son of Joseph Patrick and Regina O'Brien. They lived in Mount Airy, in the 1940 Federal Census. From a search I conducted I believe my Patrick enlisted in the Army on 5 June 1942 in Philadelphia. Also, I have seen a Patrick J. O'Brien and Margaret Martin being married in 1943-is it my Patrick, I don't know? Martin was a name that comes up in my genealogy routinely but is she may not be one of my Martins. After that the trail runs cold for Patrick and this marriage. I do not feel comfortable that two items above are accurate. Patrick disappears. I'm wondering if Patrick was sent overseas, and may have been a casualty, and was buried overseas. Therefore a death notice might be helpful. I never heard of this Uncle Patrick growing up as a kid or even later. Until recently he was new news to me. Could someone look at the death notices for around 1942 to 1945 and see if there is a listing for Patrick. Any efforts from my side have not been productive. I appreciate your help!
Don't know what happened to my message, but should be: library card at Free Library of Philadelphia will get you access to many archival newspapers. B Casaleno
