    3. FERTIG, Millerstown, Perry Co. In the 1860 census William and Catherine Fertig and their four sons are in Millerstown. Oral history from my grandmother without better source information: William and Catherine were married August 1851, in Wilkes Berre, PA William died September 28, 1863. Catherine's birth name was Speese. Documented information: Children: John FERTIG b. about 1852 William FERTIG b. about 1856 George S. FERTIG b 1858 Winfield Scott FERTIG b March 19, 1861 (This is my line, and I have quite a bit of information.) Catherine married George L. HOWER, Sr. after William's death and before 1869, and had two additional children, Harrison Irvin HOWER and William Mordon HOWER. She died December 28, 1912, in Juniata County. On Winfield's death certificate, his mother's maiden name is listed as Etta Spaeth In the 1850 census, I find two William Fertigs about the same age. I would like to know which is mine, and more about his parentage. I have also been unable to verify when William died, or determine where. War related injuries is most logical. A William Fertig served in Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, which was at Gettysburg. He was discharged July 30, 1863 on Surgeons Orders. Was this mine or the other William?
