Michele, I did a check of my 1790 PA census for the name William EVANS. In 1790 there were only two (2) counties that had a "Germantown"..Philadelphia and Franklin. Out of the 2 counties, only Philadelphia had a Wm EVANS. This is the information that was given for the census. Wm EVANS was the head of household. He is listed in the city of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, in the Southern District, Pine Street, South Side. His occupation was listed as a Taylor. Listed were 3 free white males over 16, 1 free white male under 16, and 3 free white females. I know it's a long shot, but maybe it is something you can look into. Good luck with your research. Their daughter, Mary "Polly" Evans was my 4th great-grandmother, born in 1782. Her place of birth is "Germantown." She married Robert Askey in 1801 and moved to Clearfield County with him. I believe that they may have been affiliated with the Centre Presbyterian Church, but this is a guess. There is a great deal of research on the Askey men. I am trying to fill in information on the women in my family tree. > > Are there any researchers out there with information on this family? > > Michele > > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. Could not find anything definite on your William Evans, but did find this in "American Revolutionary Soldiers of Franklin County" (pg24) which may provide some clues. Capt. Thomas Askey ... was from Fannett Twp (Franklin County - this would put his residence on the Perry County line) He married Elizabeth, daughter of Col. Robert Baker, 12 June 1764. Rev J.C. Bucher performed the marriage. Thomas was born in 1727 and died in 1807. His wife died in 1830. They are buried in an old Presbyterian Church yard in Centre County, 6 miles east of Bellefonte, at Jacksonville. They had issue: John who married Betty Evans, William who married Mary Baker, David married Jane Harrison, Robert married Mary Polly Evans, James married Jane Swazey, Samuel married Lettie McKibben (I have a text file of materials on this line), Ann married Baptist Lucas, Rebecca married Joseph Lucas, Peggy married David Tipton and Polly who never married. The same book also mentions that a Benedict Lucas had Rev War service from Fannett Twp, but no family info. In the 1790 PA Census, the only Benedict Lucas is in Mifflin County pg 153. On the same page: Joseph Lucas, Thomas Askins, and David Evans. There is also a James Bonner on pg 184. As Centre County was formed, in part, from Mifflin, these may be some of the families mentioned in the article. Could not find any "Askey" in the entire state, but then the 1790 is full of spelling errors. The confusion about Centre Presbyterian Church may result from the fact that there was a Centre Pres in Madison Twp, Perry County, plus the above mentioned Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Centre County. According to the Centre County genweb site, this cemetery is now called Lick Run Presbyterian and the records have been published. I checked the early marriage records for both Presbyterians in Fannett Twp, Franklin County, and Centre Presbyterian Church in Perry Co, but did not find any of the above named people. There is a William Evans in Upper West Conococheague records, - now Mercersburg, Franklin Co. Nothing definitive to set him off as your William Evans. "Germantown" as the place of birth could be anywhere! It was sometimes used as a local or slang term for a German settlement (versus English or Scotch-Irish). Where was the one in Franklin County? Could not find it in the 1832 gazetteer. ----- Original Message ----- From: lisa To: PAPERRY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2004 9:28 AM Subject: Re: [PA-Perry] Germantown Michele, I did a check of my 1790 PA census for the name William EVANS.
