The Perry County Democrat, New Bloomfield, November 17, 1907 George A. Smith, a former well-known and highly respected citizen of this county, died at his home in Shrewsbury, York county, Pa., at 5:20 o'clock Saturday morning, November 23, 1907, aged 73 years, 7 months and 10 days. His death was not unexpected, for he had been in ill health for some time past, being afflicted with diabetes which developed into diabetic gangrene. George Alfred Smith was the eldest son of Henry L. and Mary Ann Smith and was born near Ickesburg, April 13, 1836. When eight years old he moved with his parents to the Middle Ridge farm, near Newport, where the greater part of his life was spent. In 1882 he moved to Elliottsburg and in 1887 moved to Marysville. In 1902, after having lived sixty-six years in Perry county, he moved with his son, C. B. Smith, to Shrewsbury, where he died. Mr. Smith was married February 11, 1858, to Mary Elizabeth Fritz, of New Bloomfield, who survives. They had two children--Laura Euphrasa, who died December 1, 1862, and C. Brinton Smith, who lives in Shrewsbury. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Willis L., Philadelphia; Mrs. James B. Leiby., and Mrs. John S. Roper, Newport, and Mrs. Elias B. Leiby, Marysville. The deceased was an exemplary man and a good citizen in every sense of the word. He was a member of the Reformed church, having been confirmed in the old union church in Newport April 19, 1856, and was always a faithful attendant of devine services. In political faith he was a Democrat and always took an active, intelligent interest in politics. He was a pleasant and sociable gentleman, a true friend, and a kind and affectionate husband and father. To his bereaved family we extend our sincere sympathy. Funeral services were held at his late home in Shrewsbury on Monday evening and on Tuesday the remains were brought to Newport, where services were held in the Reformed church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. A.H. Herbst, assisted by Rev. F.L. Kerr, of Newport. Interment was made in the Newport cemetery. ===== Judy Warner Bookwalter (Conner Crull Garland Garlin George Harglerode Kough/Koch Leighty Morrison Riggleman Smith Warner Zimmerman) http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?m=51270668103&n=423147537 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
