Biographies of 2 Shattos on pages 1107 and 1115 (both in Perry county and both from the same ancestor) condensing what the book says: Nicholas Shatto was a native of York county and came to Perry county and was one of the first settlers there. He lived in Tyrone twp. He married and had the following named children: Joseph; DAVID; Benjamin, and Jacob. Son Jacob was born in York county and married a Miss Rensberger. Their children were Samuel, Joseph, twins Sarah and Susan, Hester, and Hettie. All but Samuel died before 1897. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Shatto were members of the Dunkard church. Jacob Shatto died March 8, 1856 at age 88 (born about 1768?). Jacob's wife died Feb. 17, 1853. Jacob and his wife's son Samuel married Elizabeth Lackey, daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Allbright or Renbright) Lackey of Perry county, January 9, 1845. Samuel Shatto was born October 21, 1808, in Tyrone twp and his wife Elizabeth Lacky was born November 22, 1821. Elizabeth Lackey was Samuel's 3rd wife. Samuel and Elizabeth Lackey Shatto's children were Isaac, John. L., Benjamin F., Mary E.(Mrs. Daniel Comp), and Maria (first wife of Daniel Comp - Maria died June, 1889 at aged 38). His 1st wife was Eliza hair, daughter of Jacob Hair. Samuel married Eliza Hair in 1836 and their children were Levi and Jacob (Jacob died April 17, 1850 at 11 years of age). Eliza Hair Shatto died August 10, 1840. Samuel's 2nd wife was Annie Shade, who he married in 1842. Their only child died in infancy. Annie Shade Shatto died July 10, 1843. Isaac Shatto, son of Samuel and his 3rd wife Elizabeth Lackey, was born Oct 28, 1845 and was married May 25, 1868 to Elmira A., daughter of Peter and Catharine (Aultland) Beacher. Isaac and Elmira's children are Benjamin F. and Mary E. (Mrs. David Hamman). Elmira Beacher Shatto died May 8, 1877 at age 27. Isaac again married, January 8, 1884, to Susan, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Myers) Drawbaugh. John L. Shatto, son of Samuel and elizabeth (Lackey) Shatto, was born June 28, 1848 and was married Oct 17, 1872 to Annie F. Noy, daughter of Isaac and Martha (Perry) Noy. John L. and Annie's children are: clara L. (Mrs. Elmer Loy), Annie M., Elmer L., and Effie L. Hope this helps, Sue PS: As David Shatto's brother Jacob was born about 1768, it is reasonable to assume that David was born in the 1770's and with the 4 sons (of Nicholas) one of them probably had a son named William.
Dear Sue: I'm a bit red-faced about all this. After posting the enquiry I suddenly realized these two Shattos, David and William are my lineal ancestors: 1. David Shatto (23 June 1780 - 3 Feb 1841) and his wife Julianna Gardner Shatto Troup (5 Sep 1798 - 19 May 1865). David died of small pox and his widow remarried a Peter Troup. David was indeed the son of Jean Nicholas Chateau/Shatto, Jr (c. 1733? - Bef. 17 Nov 1827) who immigrated to PA with his father, Jean Nicholas Chateau, Sr. in 1739 on the Loyal Judith. 2. William Shatto (17 Nov 1815 - 17 May 1891) is the above David's son. He left Perry County for Conemaugh County, PA, by 1850 - iron worker - and then on to Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and finally in Kansas where he found his rest. Your condensed notes are from a book and with page numbers. But what book is this? I would like the full citation. It sounds like one of those vanity biographical volumes published around the turn of the 19th century. Your notes have only some of Jean Nicholas Chateau's - known as Nicholas Shatto - children. He had 3 more than those given: Catherine, m. George Schuler; Ephraim, m. Margaret Unknown; Mary "Polly", m. Andrew Hopple. Also, Jean Nicholas Chateau, Jr. was not born in York County, PA. He was born in France, Germany or possibly England and was 6 when he arrived in PA. He did migrate from York to what became Perry County. Thanks for responding. There are some things I didn't have before from the biographical sketch you sent. Please let me know where it came from and how I might get ahold of it.
