    1. Re: [PA-Perry] Barbara "Barbary" Burkholder born abt 7 Apr 1758 in Buffalo Township
    2. Carolyn K Shearer
    3. Buffalo Township was not formed until 1799. It was cut from Greenwood which in turn was formed in 1767. At that time all this was still part of Cumberland County. Checking the 1778 tax list for Greenwood, Cumberland County, (the first one that I have) there are no Burkholders - very few names at all that would appear to be of German descent. There are no Burkholders in the first volume of Cumberland County will abstracts - 1750-1785. Who did she marry? You probably should be looking further east - have you tried Lancaster County? I have notes on the Burkholders of Franklin. They claim to have come to Franklin from Lancaster by way of Cumberland. There was an Adam who died c1800 in Greene Twp, Franklin who named a daughter Barbara in his will - unfortunately he did not indicate whether or not his daughters were married. Will recheck my records if you will send more information. ----- Original Message ----- From: racobb@verizon.net To: PAPERRY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, March 26, 2004 10:27 AM Subject: [PA-Perry] Barbara "Barbary" Burkholder born abt 7 Apr 1758 in Buffalo Township This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 1. [PA-Perry] Hartzells in Perry county
    2. David Leebrick
    3. After the death of their father in 1828, four HARTZELL brothers moved up to Perry county. Samuel, the oldest, settled in Wheatfield Twp. Adam, the next son, moved his family to Iowa in 1844. Michael and John, the youngest two sons, raised their families in Newport. All four boys spent some time as "boatmen" during their time in Newport. I'd like to learn more about this occupation of "boatman". I assume their trade was practiced on the Juniata River. What was the nature of commerce on the Juniata River in the mid 1850's? 2. The Wolfe
    3. Hi Connie - You have me stumped there. I have that Jane Snyder's mother was Rachel Nipple and that Jane died on November 14, 1915. According to an article that was written about your Jacob Kuhn, it states that Jacob Sr. and Rachel Nipple had 11 children, but I don't know in what order they were. They were listed as Frederick and Catherine, who died in infancy; Andrew; Mary, widow of Levi Haulsbaugh; Jane, widow of Abraham Snyder; William; Jacob; John; Sidney (Mrs. Samuel Robinson), Samuel; and Alfred. Do you have the birthdates of the children? Do you have any death certificates for any of the other brothers and sisters? Sorry I wasn't much help. I will have to check and see if I can find an obit. for her the next time I go to the Library. 1. [PA-Perry] help with STEWART and NELSON
    2. Lynn Visone
    3. I have known for a long time that my greatgreatgrandparents Joseph and Margaret Stewart were from PA, but I had no idea which county until I received a copy of Margaret's obit that reads, in part "STEWART, Margaret J.; b. 15 Mar 1824 Perry Co., PA, d/o Charles L. Neilson, d. 8 Feb 1902, bur. Mt. Vernon Cem., m. 1842 to Jesse [or Joseph], 13 ch. of which 8 are dec., res. Vernon Twp., ch.: Martha Ellen (dec.)," So of course I immediately joined this mailing list. :-) Census records indicate Joseph was born somewhere in PA, and since their first child was also born there, I will assume they were married there. They were in Iowa for the 1850 census, where they had a child named Nelson, and 3 adults with the last name of Nelson living with them, so I think Margaret's maiden name was Nelson rather than Neilson. I would appreciate any help in locating birth records for Margaret, Joseph, and Martha Ellen; marriage record for M & J; etc. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
