Neither pertains to Nebraska or Platte Co but alot of you are on other sites so am just going to put the names out there. The birth certificate is from a St. Josephs Bohemian Orphanage in LISLE, Ill. It was for a child born in 1908 named Julie SVEC to Frances and Rosalie SVEC. Obviously someone had sent for it in 1962 as there is the copy of the BC and a letter from the orphanage or someplace that had the records. Don't know the circumstances. The bible is for the families PRESBREY- DEAN. It was printed in 1812 in Philadelphia and I found people on Ancestry who were looking for info on these families but have not received a reply to my e-mails though I wrote to five and only one bounced back. It is in really good condition. I will probably give it to the FHL if I don't get a response soon. It seems the families were centered mostly in the Mass. and Philadelphia areas. I have a theory about the name. Perhaps someone can support it. Have seen it spelled Shearman's Valley. Could it be occupationally related? I have also read that Perry County was a place to take cattle flocks (sheep and cows) during the war (F&I, Revolution?) to keep them safe. Kathy

Joan, I noticed in your query for Charles Perry born in Ireland in 1839. You stated that you have looked at the passenger lists that you have found on-line. Have you tried your local library and checked the Immigration books. There is a series out called the Famine Immigrants 1846 to 1851. You might try looking for your Charles PERRY in those volumes. Hello Salapano and Fellow Listers: For Death Records for the years 1919-1920 you will almost have to find a church record or a bible record. There may also have been a death notice or obituary in the newspaper. He settled in Philadelphia, PA (in a place called GermanTown). He died after the 1880 Census and before the 1900 Census. In 1860 Census I find him living in his Mother-in-Law's household, Sarah Brown. He was 22 years of age, born in Ireland, and he was a painter. IN 1850 Census I find a boy, Charle Perry, age 14, living with Mr & Mrs. Stewart. Mr. Stewart is a painter. Location of this Census County: Allegheny, Township: Pittsburgh Ward 7, State: PA, Roll: M432_746, Page454, Image: 390. Perry or Stewart are no where in the 1840 Census. Because Mr. Stewart was a painter, and my Charles Perry was a painter, I believe my Charles Perry came from Ireland with the Stewarts between 1840 and 1850. How can I find the ship he came over on. I have checked all the passenger ships I can find online. Any Ideas would be very well appreciated. Joan

Can anyone give me an idea of the age range considered "minor" and at what age one reached majority in the 18th/19th centuries in Pennsylvania? I'm referring to those wills and orphan court records in which some people are given guardians, etc. because they are minors. Did females lose their minor status if they married? Thanks Barbara

Toni, In order to complete guaranteed legal transfer of real estate property in Pennsylvania a "clear title" is required. To get a clear title, a "title search" must be performed. A title search is done, usually by paralegals working for an attorney. They search backward in time through land transfer books located in the county courthouse of the county in which the property is located, probably in the office of the county register and recorder. I have found that both clerks and paralegals working in these offices are quite willing to tell a novice how to use the indices in the "grantor" and "grantee" books and how to proceed from one book to the next in order to complete a title search. The records used to make title searches are open to the public in county court houses. When you live in or near the county where the property is located, or if you can pay a visit to the county, you can do excactly the same work as is done by a paralegal in order to trace the history of a given property. Since you live at a great distance, perhaps you cannot, yourself, do the title search in the courthouse. In that case can you ask a friend or relative who does live near the courthouse to do the search for you. If not you can hire someone to do a title search. To save money on title search, I would suggest you try to contact the present owner of the property and ask for the name and address of the "title company" that is doing the title search on the property to be sold. Since the title company will have just completed a bona fide title search for the seller of the property, I would think they would be amenable to giving you a copy of their title search for a fee less than that charged to the property seller. It's worth a try! Hope this turns out to be accurate and helpful advice, and wishing you good luck, Nelson R. Hello fellow listers, My husband's boyhood home will soon be sold and I would like to find out how to research it's history to include in our family tree papers. We have not lived in the area for over 32 years. The sale is being handled by another party and we have very little information about when the property first came to the family in the early 1950's. I was once told the farmhouse itself was the second oldest in Perry Co. and it dated back to 1818. It is a log home that has been remodeled, added onto, etc. several times by the various owners. Other than it's age, I know of no historical significance. Were would I start? Any ideas would be appreciated. We only get back to the area about twice a year. Thank you, Toni Hackenberger St. Peters, MO
