Hi Marcia; I have been looking for Wilsons up and down Perry County for some time. Around 1784 my ancestor, Robert Kelly, took for a second wife Lettice Wilson, widow of the recently deceased Samuel Wilson of W. Pennsboro, Cumberland. Robert lived near Landisburg. Lettice had children from her marriage to Samuel: John, James, Andrew and Mary. John had a son, Samuel, as noted in Samuel Wilson's will. I have been trying to determine if her son is the same James Wilson who married Margaret Kilgore in 1805. It was his second marriage, his first wife also possibly being a Margaret. I believe he had a daughter, Margaret, and will check for you. Kathy
Hello Kathy, There were quite a few Wilsons living in the area of Pennsylvania that became Juniata Co. and Perry Co. The two-volume Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia Of Juniata Valley (1897) lists18 Wilsons in its index, viz., George, Henry, H. Latimer, Isaac, James B., John (2), John A., John F., Nathaniel, Robert (3), Samuel, William, William A., William H., and William W. The mention of Samuel Wilson occurs on p. 343 of volume one. I regret I do not have the first volume of this set: I have only the second volume which begins with page 683. Since the Perry Historians created an index for both volumes and published the index in a reprint of the second volume in 1979, I think you will find Perry Historians have a copy of the first volume of BEJV in their library. In May 1802 my immigrant ancestor, Johannes Zulauf>John Sulouff, bought 206 acres from George Wilson whose farm was situated at the confluence of the Licking Creek and the Tuscarora Creek in Milford Twp., in the portion of Mifflin Co. that became Juniata Co. in 1831. The last I heard, about five years ago, a Wilson descendant owned and lived on the remaining Wilson property in the corner of Milford Twp. formed by these two creeks. You might also consider the fact that this portion of Mifflin Co. was taken off of Cumberland Co. in 1789 and that Perry Co. was taken off of Cumberland Co. in 1820. Thus you might find the roots of your Wilsons in old Cumberland Co. records. Happy hunting, Nelson R. I do not know. According to the obit posted on Perry Co. webstie the father of my John Henry Light from Wheatfield Twp., Perry County, was Ludwig Light. John Henry Light (1773-1854), according to the census information, was born in PA. I did find a Ludwig Light in 1790 census in Washington Co, MD. In addition to Ludwig Light in 1790 in same county in MD there was a Benjamin, John and Peter. This John was not in the right age category to be my John Henry Light. I tried to pursue these Maryland Light's on the MD web site, but did not get any information that seemed to fit. The obit. for John Henry Light did not name his mother. The first Penn land patent in 1805 for John Henry Light of then Cumberland Co. had his surname spelled Leight. Family "legend" says that the "e" was dropped. I have had a copy of this land patent since 1952! His second land patent of 1808 had his surname as Light. I have made progress coming forward with some of the children of John Henry Light. But I have not gotten back any further. I am aware of a Light family in Lancaster, but anything that I was able to turn up, did not "fit" either for names or dates. But perhaps there is additional information that I do not have. Incidently, my surname was Lyte because my grandfather changed the Light to Lyte. Long story about that. Hello Marcia, I think I have some information that might help you. BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JUNIATA VALLEY, pp. 958-959, has an article on Hezekiah MCAFEE born in McAfeetown, Turbett Twp., then Mifflin Co., now Juniata Co. The article gives considerable ancestral history as well as some descendant history. Among descendants named are Daniel, James, John, and Wilson. I can scan an OCR transcription and send you the article as a plain text E-mail message if you wish. According to BIOG. ENCY. OF JUNIATA VALLEY and the FLICKINGER FAMILY HISTORY, Sydney WILSON was b. 3/1/1817 in Mifflin Co. (now Juniata Co.). Her parents were Richard WILSON and Catherine STROUSE. It appears possible that my Sidney Wilson and your Margaret Wilson could be closely related, perhaps even sisters. (I have a lot of information on Sidney's husband, Jacob Groninger and their descendants which I will happily share if you find there is a connection and want what I have.) Altogether, the BIOG. ENCY. includes mention of 18 WILSONS, among them George, Henry, H. Latimer, Isaac, James B., John (4), Nathaniel, Robert (3), Samuel, and William (3). If you have a particular interest in one of these please let me know. Since Richard is not listed in this publication, I presume he and wife, Catherine Strouse, must have been mentioned in the Flickinger publication which I used in the Juniata Co. Historical Society Archival Library but which I do not have available now. I am also interested in the surname LOUDON from this area of Pennsylvania. Grace Arlene LOUDON was b. 1876 in Juniata Co. and was married 2/27/1901 in Mifflintown to Noah Hertzler SULOUFF>SULOFF. Soon thereafter they moved to Cleveland OH where Noah became widely known as the engineer in charge of constructing the Cleveland Railroad Terminal Tower Building, the rail line out to the upscale Shaker Heights community, and other railroad projects. I would like to learn more about Grace LOUDON if you (or husband) are connected to the LOUDON family from Juniata Co. Regards, Nelson R. Thanks for your reply. From Donna Zinn I earlier learned that there was another Light family in Perry County and they too lived in Carroll Twp. I have no information that there was a Peter Light in my family. My Light family is connected to John Henry Light who lived in Wheatfield Twp. from about 1805. (Was Rye Twp. of Cumberland Co. when he got his Penn land patent.) I have John Henry Light's will and additonal papers from the Court House. His obit is on the Perry rootswebsite. All his children are named. I have kept this additional information on other Light's in Perry Co.to help keep them sorted out. At this time I do not know of any brothers or sisters of John Henry Light. Thanks for replying. Peggy Lyte Tyrrell [email protected] wrote: > Could be a coincidence, but I thought you'd like to know. Could be a coincidence, but I thought you'd like to know. My Henry LONG (1770-1841) and some of his children are also buried at Pisgah Cemetery - not sure about his wife. I would like to correspond with anyone interested in Lydia Burns. My 3rd great grandmother was Lydia Burns b. 11/29/1827 to Henry & Lydia (Grimm) Burns. Her parents and two married brothers were residents of Juniata Co. She married about 1848 to Jacob Sulouff. They resided near Cocolamus, Juniata Co., and are reportedly buried in a New Salem cemetery. I would like to learn if there is a possible family connection. Your Lights are buried in the same row as some of my husband's Shearer family in Pisgah Evngelical E.U. B. Cemetery, Carroll Twp. From "30 Perry County PA Cemetery Records" pg 282 Jacob Light (GAR flag 1861-1865) born 24 Nov 1843, died 9 Feb 1908, age 64, 2, 15. Lydia Light - no other information recorded. Philip Light 'my father' died 16 Mar 1880, age 65, 9, 10. Philip would appear to be the husband of Lydia who died just before the census was taken. Jacob is the correct age to be their son. Also in the same cemetery, pp278-9 Phoebie M. Light - no dates Anna M. Light -1838-1911 Urias B. Light- 1842-1910 Lydia Burns, wife of Philip Light - 15 Feb 1818-7 Sep1898, age 44,11, 22 (obivious math error here - she would have been 80 years, 6 months and 12 days.
