    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hall Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/odB.2ACI/443 Message Board Post: Newspaper article-- Looking Back 100 Years. >From The Perry Forester Thursday, October 25, 1821 Shocking Accident "In the midst of life we are in death" On the morning of the 9th inst. Mr. Henry Hall, of Saville township, in ths county, went a short distance from his own house to shoot squirrels, and having killed one, which lodged in the limbs of a hickory tree, about 60 feets from the ground, the unfortunate man immediately ascended the tree to that height, where he took hold of a dead limb, which broke, and without interruption from other branches, he fell to the ground, and by the fall, his bones were literally smashed to pieces. In this situation it is supposed he lay about half an hour, when his mother fortunately passing along a road a short distance from him, heard his dying groans, which invited her to a view of the distressing scene. She called for the family, but not being heard, she had to leave him and go for them; they carried him home, after which he lived about two hours and departed this live, leaving to survivors a solemn warning to be "also ready". The above information was generously submitted by Nikki Perry; it was obtained from the Perry Historians Library; newspaper clippings collection/family files.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Rice, Koser Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/odB.2ACI/442 Message Board Post: Samuel M. Rice, the Democratic candidate for Director of the Poor, was born in Tyrone Township, near Landisburg, in 1846. He is a son of the late Jeremiah and Catharine (Koser) Rice, and is a worthy member of one of the oldest and most respected families in the county. Mr. Rice was reared on his father's farm, but when a young man learned the stone mason trade, in which occupation he is still engaged. He is a highly reputable, honorable, honest man, a member and trustee of the Reformed church of Landisburg. He has served his township several times as supervisor and in view of the fact that Tyrone is one of the strongest Republican districts in the county his election to an office in that township speaks well for his character and fitness an the high regard in which he is held by those who know him best. Mr. Rice is a strictly temperate and thoroughly honest and conscientious man, and if elected Director of the Poor House will see that proper economy is used in the manage! ment of the Poor House and that not one cent of the taxpayers' money is wasted. He is a highly intelligent man, of firm character and as Director of the Poor could not be made a tool of by anybody. The taxpayers of the county will make no mistake in electing him. handwritten: Sept. 1907 The above information was generously submitted by Nikki Perry; it was obtained from the Perry Historians Library; newspaper clippings collection/family files.

    1. [PA-Perry] Perry County Surname
    2. Charlene Quinn
    3. FERTIG, Millerstown, Perry Co. In the 1860 census William and Catherine Fertig and their four sons are in Millerstown. Oral history from my grandmother without better source information: William and Catherine were married August 1851, in Wilkes Berre, PA William died September 28, 1863. Catherine's birth name was Speese. Documented information: Children: John FERTIG b. about 1852 William FERTIG b. about 1856 George S. FERTIG b 1858 Winfield Scott FERTIG b March 19, 1861 (This is my line, and I have quite a bit of information.) Catherine married George L. HOWER, Sr. after William's death and before 1869, and had two additional children, Harrison Irvin HOWER and William Mordon HOWER. She died December 28, 1912, in Juniata County. On Winfield's death certificate, his mother's maiden name is listed as Etta Spaeth In the 1850 census, I find two William Fertigs about the same age. I would like to know which is mine, and more about his parentage. I have also been unable to verify when William died, or determine where. War related injuries is most logical. A William Fertig served in Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, which was at Gettysburg. He was discharged July 30, 1863 on Surgeons Orders. Was this mine or the other William? National Archives was not able to locate a Pension file.
