She had been in her usual good health for some time past and ate her breakfast in the morning and retired to her room and when she was called for dinner her unconscious form was found on a couch where she had fallen either from a stroke or heart failure and he did not rally but passed peacefully away. She had for the past three years boarded with Tillie Riggleman and lived in her own house not far away and it was her custom to walk back and forth for each meal time. The deceased was born in York county, Pa., August 29, 1822 and was aged 83 years, 1 month and 6 days. She was the oldest child of Jacob and Christina (Waltemyer) Miller. Her parents afterward moved to Perry county and when residing near Shermansdale, she was married to Adolphus Hall December 15, 1863, by Rev. Henry Moses. Her husband had preceded her to the spririt world nearly 26 years ago, and since then she had made her home with! her niece, Mrs. Jacob Sherman and later with Mrs. Tille Riggleman. She is survivedby three brothers, Andrew Miller of Odebolt, Iowa; William of McCrea, Cumberland county and Jesse of Kennedy Valley. CRIST Unobtrusive, Good Citizen Goes to His L_ng Home. Everybody who knew Captain J. H. Crist here _____ with regret of his death, which occurred at Lewistown on __nday. He had been in ill health for a year past and consequently, his death is not in the nature of a surprise. Death was directly due to dropsy. Captain Crist was born near Green___, this county, and came to this place a rosy-cheeked, good-natured lad perhaps 10 years old. The canal at____ him, as it did many another high-spirited boy and from the position of ___ he steadily rose until he became supervisor of this division, the duties of ___ he faithfully discharged for many years. He was always one of our most respected citizens, and when he returned to Lewistown, a few years ago, he left everybody his friend behind. Prior to the war he was captain of the ___ggold Artillery, of this place, and ___ President Lincoln's first call for _,000 troops to suppress what was then thought an incipient rebellion he was among the first to respond tothe patriotic summons to duty. He was enrolled as first lieutenant of Company D, 2d Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, April 20, 1861, with H. D. Wood___ and C.K. Breneman as captain and second lieutenant respectively. At the expiration of this three months' term of service he returned home. Upon Lee's threatened invasion ___ Pennsylvania, in the early autumn 1862, he, with John S. Demaree and George W. Brown, raised company ____ Pennsylvania volunteers, and ___ to the defense of our border, again as first lieutenant. Mr. Demareee as captain and Mr. Brown, second lieutenant. He was the last survivor of the five company officers named. Returning home, he resumed the arts of peace, discharging his duties of citizenship, as he found them having been repeatedly called to serve the people in various local offices. The Democratic county convention nominated him for member of assembly in 1880, but he was defeated for election by his Republican opponent, M. B. Holman. His wife, who was a Miss Shull, died several years ago. His surviving children are: Mrs. Henry Penny, of Mifflintown; Mrs. Cora Hall, Miss Ida Crist, John James and Harry of Lewistown, and Charley Crist, of this place. He is also survived by two brothers, Jacob Crist, of New Bloomfield, and Samuel Crist, of this place and by two sisters, Mrs. Henry Comp, of this place and Mrs. Michael Smith, of Oliver township. The funeral was held on Tuesday. The body was brought here on Seashore Express at 10:44am, under escort of Messres. George E. Heinbach, Post Commander; W.W. Trout, W. H. Felix, W.P. Mendenhall and Lewis Ruble, as a committee of Colonel Hulings Post, No. 17, G.A.R., of Lewistown. Upon arrival the body was taken charge of by undertakers John Fleisher & Co., and conveyed by Lieutenant Arnold Lobaugh Post, No. 297, G.A.R., to the residence of his son, Charles, on Water Street. From there it was taken to the Lutheran church at 1:30pm, Rev. S.E. Smith conducting the services. The cortege comprised the family of the deceased; the escort from Colonel Hulings Post; Captain D. Meehan and George W. Heller, representing the chief engineer's office of the Pennsylvania Canal Company, Harrisburg; twenty-five members of Lieutenant Arnold Lobaugh Post marshaled by Post Commander Samuel Keen, with William Wertz as Officer of the Day commanding a Guard of Honor comprised of Noah Hedding, G! eorge M. Albright, Albert Sailor and John Powell. The pall-bearers were Samuel Clay, W.M. Horting, John Anderson, Josiah Zeigler, William Ickes and Amos Smith. Captain Crist was a Junior Vice Commander of Lieutenant Arnold Lobaugh Post and was buried with honors of war in the cemetery. He commanded a squad who performed the first like service over a fallen comrade, Joseph Billings, at this place, many years ago.
