Tuesday, April 26--George Fleisher's administrator, will sell, near Markelville, one horse, one buggy, farming implements, carpenter tools and miscellaneous articles. ------------------------------------------------------ She Climbed a Tree and Eloped. Chambersburg, April 10.--Miss Grace Kohler, the daughter of a farmer living near Clay Hill, in Antrim township, has eloped with Edward Stoner, a widower, under romantic circumstances. Her parents were opposed to the love affair, and while they were absent from home she sent for Stoner, but the old folks returned home before he arrived. She left the house alone and climbed a pine tree to wait for him. They searched for her in vain, and she could see them by the aid of the moonlight, but was invisible to them. She soon joined Stoner and they were married at Greencastle. ------------------------------------------------------ The Pittsburg Penny Press reports a quiet movement at Harrisburg to make Beaver a Presidential candidate next year if Blaine declines. ------------------------------------------------------ Tried to Bleed Himself to Death. West Chester, April 8.--David Meredith, of Lionville, was found lying in his stable last night in an insensible condition, the result of his having opened an artery in one of his wrists, with suicidal intent. He recently buried his wife and since then has been afflicted with melancholy. He has half a dozen children depending on him for support and the attending physician thinks that he cannot survive. ------------------------------------------------------ JOHN T. RAYMOND, the famous comedian, died at Evansville, Indiana, on Sunday. He was ill but a few days with an intestinal disorder, complicated with heart trouble. His family live in New York. All who have ever heard him as Col. Mulbery Sellers will regret that one so gifted should be called hence in the prime of life. He was 51 years old on Tuesday of last week. ------------------------------------------------------ JUDGE SADLER'S friends in the Cumberland Valley are pushing him for the Republican nomination for Supreme Judge, says an exchange. We have two old and able lawyers in this county, of the same political complexion, either of whom, if the Republicans are to sweep the State as they did last fall, we would like to see elevated to the Supreme Bench. We refer to W. A. Sponsler, Esq., and Judge Junkin. Perry furnished a Chief Justice many years ago whose decisions are still quoted in all the courts of the civilized world. As a jurist, John Bannister Gibson has had few equals. ------------------------------------------------------ EX GOV. PATTISON has been appointed by the President one of the commissioners to investigate the Pacific railroads under a recent act of Congress. The Ex-Governor belongs to that class of men whom the Fates smile upon. When he steps out of one office there is always another ready for him. Salary $750 a month and all expenses paid by the government. ------------------------------------------------------ JAMES G. BLAINE is lying sick at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, but is now regarded as out of danger. ------------------------------------------------------ RHODE ISLAND has elected a Democratic Governor and has a majority in the Legislature. Will wonders never cease ? ------------------------------------------------------ UPWARDS of 150,000 people met in Hyde Park, London, on Monday afternoon and protested against the Irish Coercion measures. ------------------------------------------------------ The letter of the President in relation to the Canadian fisheries trouble is not satisfactory to the Massachusetts fishermen. ------------------------------------------------------ GOV. BEAVER has not yet appointed a successor to Judge Peirce, who died at Philadelphia last week. It is likely to be Assistant District Attorney Bregy. ------------------------------------------------------ GOV. MATTHEW S. QUAY, whose term as U. S. Senator began on the 4th March, still holds on to the State Treasurer's office. Two big salaries for one man holding two offices at the same time certainly gives the Boss the right to pose as a Republican Reformer of political abuses. ------------------------------------------------------ The P. C. R. R. The friends of the P. C. R. R. have every reason to be much encouraged. The work of preparation goes bravely on. Many who have been holding back, doubting the success of the enterprise, are now among the foremost in pushing on the work and earnestly advocating the construction of the road. From this town west to the Round Top, the farmers of the valley are beginning to see the importance of a railroad from the county seat to Duncannon. Their individual interests demand such connection. The value of their farms and farm-earnings is at stake. The removal of the county seat and the erection of new and costly public buildings would ruin them. They cannot afford to pay the additional taxes that would surely be required of them and which could be collected off them by law. They have at last come to realize the situation and those of them who have any public spirit will contribute to the railroad at least a portion of the amount of taxes they would be compelled to pay in the event of the removal of the county seat. It is true, there is here and there a person who is able to help on the work who will not subscribe a dollar to the road. Much as they would like to see it made, they want others to make it. The world has always had such men in it and there will continue to be such men on the face of it when Gabriel blows his horn to summon them to judgment. The man who lives entirely for himself, caring nothing for the welfare of others, is never found to be the friend of any enterprise that would benefit the community in which he lives. His whole aim in life is to get money and keep it. When he dies nobody regrets his death, for he was of no use to those among whom he lived. Thanks to the liberality of the more open-handed citizens, the grading of the P. C. R. R. is assured. Of course, those who have held aloof from the enterprise and do not intend to help it along, will not refuse to avail themselves of the advantages it will afford when it is completed, though their thoughts, during their first trip over it, will hardly be of the same kind as the feelings of those who helped build the road. By the 20th inst. the profile and specifications will be ready for the inspection of contractors. On the 27th the bids will all be in. By the 15th of May the grading will have been fairly begun, and then we will see who in this town and vicinity are for and who are against the P. C. R. R. We hope to find not one of the latter kind. ------------------------------------------------------ ===== Judy Warner Bookwalter (Conner Crull Garland Garlin George Harglerode Kough/Koch Leighty Morrison Riggleman Smith Warner Zimmerman) http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?m=51270668103&n=423147537 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. The book that I quoted is only minutes of the Presbytery, not of any of the individual churches. I think the marriages have been published, but don't remember seeing any baptisms. Have you checked with the Perry County Historians? Just a comment on 'naming patterns.' I have been a genealogist for almost 40 years, over 25 as a full time professional, and I have yet to see more than a couple of Scotch Irish families stick to any of the 'naming patterns' that seem to circulate on the internet. The same is true for the Germans. I have a lot of Bible records, so know the name of the children that died young and the 'pattern' theory still does not work very often. The place that it seems to have been used with a great degree of regularity is in the Dutch church records of early New York. This marriage is from Cumberland County Marriages, 1761-1800 from the Zeamer Collection, published in the PA Genealogical Magazine, FTM CD #213, and also found on FTM CD #172 (PA Vital Records). this is not my line, I just copied it for use as an example that not all our ancestors married in their early 20's. 17 Sep 1797. Married by Rev John Linn, Rev John Hoge, age 82, to Miss Rosannah McEwen, age 38, Juniata Twp, Shearman's Valley.

3. Hi Carolyn, Donna and Fellow Perry County Listers: My fourth great grandfather John Lemon, lived in Toboyne township further up the valley. He and Dianna Patterson were married by Rev. Linn in the Centre Presbyterian church on 16 Apr 1782. In John's will he lists three children, Alexander, Polly and Elizabeth. According to Scots-Irish naming conventions, Alexander would be the second son. I would like to find out if there was another older son who died as a child. I found the marriage information in the list of Rev. Linn's marriages listed in Donna's E-mail. Carolyn mentions the reference below, where is it available? Are there other records available of the Centre Presbyterian Church. If there is another son, he should have been named after John's father. This may help me in finding him. I would appreciate any help anyone might have. Thanks Leon [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Carolyn K Shearer [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, August 21, 2002 12:28 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [PA-Perry] Linn of Perry Co >From "The Centennial Memorial of the Presbytery of Carlisle" (Harrisburg, 1889) Vol II, pp59-60.(abstract) 'Rev John Linn was born in Adams County 1749, of Scotch Irish descent. 1. [PA-Perry] Obituary of Judge Benjamin F. Junkin
2. Ame Willis Ivanov
3. Excerpts from the lengthy obituary of Judge B. F. Junkin of New Bloomfield Perry County copied from an old newspaper clipping, which came to me in pieces from the family of my great aunt, Lillie Willis Junkin (wife of his son J. E. Junkin) in New Bloomfield, Perry County. There is nothing to identify the newspaper except "died at his residence in this place Friday morning of last week". Judge Junkin died October 9, 1908. ... Of the original stock of Junkins in this section there were two brothers, Joseph and Benjamin, who lived near Kingston, Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County. Joseph moved to Mercer county, this state, some time prior to 1812. Rev. Dr. George Junkin, at one time president of Lafayette College, was one of the sons of Joseph. Benjamin, the grandfather of the deceased, had four children: John (father of the subject of this sketch); Joseph, who became a physician; Benjamin, who went to Mississippi where he died in 1830-his brother Joseph preceded him in death; a sister who married Mr. Irvin in Allegheny, Pa. The Cumberland county records show that Benjamin Junkin, the second of the two brothers died about 1812. Benjamin F. Junkin was the son of the late Associate Judge John and Maria (Adams) Junkin of what is now Alinda, this county, and was born near Kingston Cumberland County, November 12, 1822. When but six months old with his parents he moved to Perry County, and his father purchased the Stroop farm at Blue Ball, later the Samuel Spotts farm, and now owned by Geo. B. Dum. Here they lived until 1853, when having sold [missing material] ...catine county, Iowa, where Mr. Junkin died in 1866. Mr. Junkin served Associate Justice of Perry county from Aug. 1832 to Jan. 1852. Mr. Junkin was twice married, his first wife having been as stated above Maria Adams, and his second wife, Susan Guss. The entire family emigrated west except the subject of this biography. At the time of their departure there were two sons and one daughter. By Mr. Junkin' second marriage with Susan Guss there were seven children born, all of whom are dead except one, a sister, Alice, unmarried and residing at Muscatine, Iowa. Mr. Junkin's full brother Harry died in this place in 1876. ... ... The deceased was married April 12, 1848, to Ann Eliza, daughter of the late James and Eliza (Conn) McGowan of this place. From this union two children resulted: Mary, wife of Jacob Strickler of Ploughkeepsie, N. Y., and John Edward, who died in this place March 31, 1895. Mrs. Junkin died April 18, 1889. Mr. Junkin was married a second time to Mrs. Laura W. McClurkin, August 23, 1890, who survives him without issue.

3. Hi John and Fellow Listers: Shermans Valley is located in what is now Perry County, PA.. The valley itself runs from near Blain, Jackson Twp. through to near Elliottsburg, Tyrone Twp.. At one point in time, almost all of central Perry Co. was considered Shermans Valley, so my points of beginning and end may be extended. Rev. LINN was an early Presbyterian pastor who pastored at Centre Presbyterian Church which was one of the earliest in Perry Co.. I am not sure if he pastored elsewhere at another time or not. Anyone else know? The Perry Historians has a photocopy of some of his church records from Centre Presbyterian Church which is presently located in what is now North East Madison Twp., Perry Co.. Hope this is helpful! Donna HELLER ZINN of Newville, Cumberland Co., PA. John H. 3. These are great sites with lots of information. If you go to the second URL (Quick Facts) you will find a US map. By clicking on a state, you will be taken to another page with quick facts about that state. In the upper left portion, there is a little link titled "view map". Clicking on this brings you to a state map with the counties. At the bottom left of that page, there is a link that tells you "Printing this map". That brings you to the third URL and the maps are good and readable. http://www.census.gov/index.html US Census Bureau http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/ State & County QuickFacts Quick, easy access to facts about people, business, and geography US Census state maps with counties http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/printmaps.html Printing state maps QuickFacts state maps are specifically designed to maximize on-line clarity. They are large and include text that is easy to read. Although most maps will print on an 8.5 by 11 inch paper with a standard printer, some are too large and won't fit on a single pice of paper. Use this table to determine the best page orientation for printing a specific map. Some maps have been scaled for printing, though there is a loss of clarity.
