There are two Mahantango Creeks; one on either side of the Susquehanna River. That means one as as the border between Juniata and Snyder Counties, one in upper Dauphin County. The Alfred Buffington's book SONGS ALONG THE MAHANTANGO refers to the creek on the eastern side. On the east it's pronounced "Mah-kah-TANG-oh" and, on the westernr side, "Mah-hah-TANG-oh" as far as I have heard. Please consider that an informal survey. Bill Snyder (no, I'm not related to the Snyders of Snyder County)

Hi Cathy You are very correct in this description. I just recently also studied this area and it does run real close to the Snyder county line. Just for a ways the mahantengo creek nears snyder and comes out below mckees half falls about 3/4 of a mile. It goes through Juniata county and runs also real close to snyder before it enters the river about a quarter of a mile above Excel Homes. Cathy may I ask where you found this information was it in a Perry or Juniata county record. Iam right now studying the area near seven stars and am a little confused on the lines right there where the townships seperate. Any suggestions where I should look. I belong to both societies. I found a conflicting report. Thank You. In a message dated 9/13/2002 11:10:33 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > and I'm not sure if Penn and Greeenwood were > or are situated near one another Hi, Below is a description of Greenwood and Penn Twps.; they are not conjoining twps. I think you may need to look at Juniata Co.?? Greenwood Twp. was formed in 1767; it was originally formed from Fermanagh, which was an original twp. at the time of the Purchase of 1754 in Cumberland Co. The book, History of Perry Co. (H. H. Hains), contains this info. under the section for Greenwood Twp: "..session of the Cumberland County courts in July, 1767, the boundaries of Greenwood Twp. were defined thus: Beginning at McKee's path, on the Susquehanna River; thence down the sd. river to the mouth of the Juniata River; thence up the Juniata River to the mouth of the Cocolamus; thence up the same to the crossing of McKee's path; thence by the said path to the place of beginning. McKee's path, mentioned herein, began at the mouth of Mahantango Creek, a short distance below the residence of Thomas McKee, on the Susquehanna River. It followed the line of the present public road which runs through Greenwood Twp., Juniata Co., westward to the mouth of the Delaware Run, at Thompsontown." The book goes on to say that when Mifflin Co. was org. in 1789, the territory that lay between the present county line and McKee's path became a part of Greenwood Twp., in Mifflin Co (now Juniata) & the territory betwen the present county line & Cocolamus Creek became part of Greenwood in Perry Co. Penn Twp. was formed in 1840 from Wheatfield Twp-- Penn was once part of Tyrone, then Rye twps. It is bounded on the north by Wheatfield; on the east by the Juniata & Susquehanna Rivers; on the south by Rye and on the west by Rye & Wheatfield. I also checked the book Pennsylvania Line (Southwest PA Genealogical Serv) for the above mentioned Mahantango Creek and found: key= Name/County/Tributary to: Mahantango Creek/Dauphin & Northumberland; Susquehanna River Mahantango Creek/Juniata & Snyder; Susquehanna River Mahantango Creek, North Branch/ Snyder; Mahantango Creek Mahantango Creek, West Branch/ Juniata & Snyder/ Mahantango Creek Mahantango (Little) Creek/ Schuylkill/ Mahantango Creek Here is a link to a twp. map from the Perry Co. I'd sure appreciate helping find the location of land an ancestor apparently owned in 1771. Christian Eyman, while residing in Bethel Township of Lancaster County, sold land to a John Crane, described as being on Mohontongo waters of Penn Township in Cumberland County of the day. According to an internet contact, the Cranes lived in Greenwood Township of Cumberland, and I'm not sure if Penn and Greeenwood were or are situated near one another. I've found a subsequent deed of sale for the property (to an Abraham Torree of Stazborg (sic) Township (Lancaster) adding no additional details aside from a location "half a mile from the survey of Henry or John Sellers", also described as being in Penn Township of Cumberland. What fascinates me is that in the deed it says "situate within 3 mills (sic) of land acquired by his father of the proprietor" (and a new spelling of the name Eaiman). I've tried many versions of the name and never found any land listings to support the possibility that Christian's father(thought by some to be Jacob Eiman of Upper Paxtang) had land. Any suggestions for location or how or where I might go about research on this would be much appreciated.
Barbara, Thanks so much for the hints on finding information on Perry County. Looks like it will keep me busy for a while!!! 8-) Rose

Folks: I am sorry to say someone sent me a virus that I did discover on my C. drive. My address book was infected with the virus and as a result so is yours because your address was in my address book. The virus is called jdbgmgr.exe. I am told it cannot be detected by Norton or McAfee anti virus programs. It sits quietly for 14 days before damaging you system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book whether or not you send e. mails. I followed the person's instructions that sent the notice to me and did find the file and deleted it. l. Go to start, the Find or Search 2. In Files/Folders write the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure to search in the C. drive 4. Click Find or Search 5. The virus has a teddy bear logo with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN 6. Right Click and delete it Go to the recycle bin and delete it there also. If you find the virus you must contact everyone in your address book, as their computers will also be infected. I am sorry to add this problem to your list of things to take care of.
Someone is sending virus hoax messages to people (again) and well-meaning people are sending the information on to the different lists. This latest one is another hoax. It will tell you to delete the JDBGMGR.EXE file. DON"T PAY ATTENTION TO IT! Go to these webpages for information about this hoax, and if you've already deleted your file, it will give you links to sites that tell you how to restore it. http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/jdbgmgr.htm http://www.Vmyths.com/hoax.cfm?id=275&page=3 The www.snopes.com is a good place to check out ANY virus or scare letter you get. 95 % of them will be false. Barbara
You just deleted an important windows file. Information is at this page: http://www.Vmyths.com/hoax.cfm?id=275&page=3 Go there, there are links telling you how to restore this page! You can also go to http://www.snopes.com/ and enter jdbgmgr.exe virus in the search box. Or simply go to: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/jdbgmgr.htm It will pull up a page that tells you the same thing: At this page, there is a link to a Microsoft page that will tell you how to restore this imiportant file. Like the SULFNBK.EXE hoax, this bogus virus warning (also known as the "Bear Virus") attempts to lure gullible users into deleting perfectly innocuous, standard Windows files from their systems. jdbgmgr.exe virus (Not to be confused with the Honor System virus...) A hysterical urban legend -- nearly identical to the sulfnbk.exe mass hysteria of 2001. The JDBGMGR.EXE file is a legit Windows operating system file, just like sulfnbk.exe. Some rules of thumb: if you merely find JDBGMGR.EXE on your computer, then it's probably not infected; but if you receive JDBGMGR.EXE as an email attachment, then it probably is infected. This urban legend started in early April 2002 among Spanish-speaking computer users. The hysteria spilled over to the English-speaking community by mid-April 2002. Well-meaning users fall prey to False Authority Syndrome when they use their eyeballs to "detect" viruses. Vmyths surmises a clueless, well-meaning user (not a hoaxster) adapted an old sulfnbk.exe alert by simply changing one instruction to look for JDBGMGR.EXE. All is not lost if you got duped and you self-damaged your PC. See the related links (below) for instructions to replace the file you deleted.
