    1. [PA-Perry] John Harmen Potter b. 1823 & Julia Ann Maxwell b. 1845
    2. Virginia Jones
    3. Mike Potter wrote : Need help! I have been searching for relatives for more than ten years in PA with little luck. Thought maybe you could help. I am looking for the family of one John Harmen Potter trade: Blacksmith Born: 5 Sep 1823, Lewistown, Mifflin, PA Married 1844 or 1845 To: Julia Ann Maxwell Born: 5 May 1827 Liverpool, Perry, PA First Son: David Grubb Potter Born: 3 Jan 1845 Liverpool, Perry, PA By 1857 John Harman Potter had moved to Clearfield, PA, but believed he was earlier apprenticed as blacksmith in Perry County. Looking for his father or family group. Through census records and tax records that my Great Grandfather, John Harmen Potter, I found that he did live in Clearfield County, Union Township, moved to Lumber City then around 1880 moved to Gretna, Nebraska with all of his children except for two. Nobody new exactly where John Harmen Potter was buried. I was able to find his grave in the middle of a cornfield in 1988 just outside of Gretna, Nebraska. The little cemetery is called the PA Cemetery, PA/Dutch Cemetery or German Cemetery depending on who you talk too. Prior to 1850 there was no trace of my particular family line. I know that John Harmen Potter according to LDS records was born in Lewistown on Sep 23, 1823. He was married to either a Juliann (Julia Ann?) Grubb or Maxwell in Liverpool according to LDS records. His first son was born in Liverpool, PA on Jan 3, 1845. His second child Margaret Ellen Potter was born according to LDS records on Feb 23, 1847 Juniata, Blair, which could be assumption since the last genealogist I hired pointed out that they could have really meant Juniata Furnace in Perry County. The rest of the children were all born in Clearfield County. It is also believed that John Harmen Potter was apprenticed as a blacksmith in Perry County. From that point on their were three generations of blacksmiths I can document. I also assume that John Harmen Potter's father was John Potter married to a Margaret who also had children names Mary A. Potter and George Potter. I can trace these folks back to Perry County because in an obit from the Newport Gazette, Thurs 13 Jan 1859 Perry Co, PA states: Potter, John & Margaret - Dau. Mary A. of Union Twp, died on 15 Dec age 28-24-26. She was formerly of Perry County. So I can conclude that this John Potter resided at some time in Perry County. In the Grubb family file in The Perry Historians, found hand written notes stating: Mary A. 28 - dau of John and Margaret Potter (Clearfield) d. Dec 15, 1859. I was able to find Mrs. Ralph Branvold who by marriage is related to the Theodore Elmer Potter Branch of the family in Idaho. She is the one who told me that through family history and tradition she was told the name was originally Bauder but when you stated the name it sounded like Potter and caused confusion, so it was changed to Bader. Then the name eventually evolved into the surname Potter. Mrs. Branvold has been researching this Potter line for over twenty years without success getting past John Harmen Potter. In her desperation for knowledge, she even ran adds in the local paper in Perry County several years ago trying to find relatives that might know the answer. She also told me that according to her records John Harmen Potter was married twice. First to Julian Maxwell and then to Julia Ann Grubb. I am waiting for death certificates for Wilson Maxwell Potter and David Grubb Potter since this did not make sense to me. John Harmen Potter's first child was named David Grubb Potter. Do these names ring a bell? Thanks!! Mike If anyone recognizes the surname MAXWELL or John Harman Potter in conjunction with their research, please feel free to contact me. Mike and I are hoping for a little serendipity to kick in! Best regards, Virginia Jones Arnold, MD Researching surnames: BAIR, BADER, CASSATT, DEVEREAUX, DOYLE, FIES, GALLAGHER, KENNEDY, McDONOUGH, POTTER, RYAN, SCOUT, SHAFFER, STEPHEN, UNDERKOFFLER, WALD, WALT, WHISTLER, WHITCOMB, ZIMMERMAN, AND ZERBE

    1. [PA-Perry] George Bauder and Catharine Emerick
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: BAUDER, EMERICK, POTTER, BADER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/odB.2ACI/506 Message Board Post: I am wondering if any PAPERRY Lister is also researching the Bauder or Emerick names, and might have anything to share or to further the ancestry research. I am researching the POTTER family in 1820 Buffalo Township. My family name was evolved into the Anglicized "POTTER" from the surname BADER or BAUDER. The name seems to have evolved from Bauder to Potter over the period from about 1810 to 1830. They have also been found earlier (1800-1810) listed as BOUGHTER on census and tax lists in Cumberland County. I have just recently read the passage below from page 202 of the Annals of the Buffalo Valley. It references a George Bauder and Catharine Emerick. " 9th August, 1786, John Aurand appointed guardian of Margaret and Catherine Emerick, children of David Emerick, deceased. Finally there is a release recorded at Lewisburg, dated the 26th of September, 1816, from James Thompson to George Schoch, which recites that David Emerick left a widow, named Catherine, and two daughters, Margaret, intermarried with James Thompson, and the other intermarried with George Bauder, and he, Thompson, releases his wife's share of David Emerick's estate, amounting to $516 75. So it seems that the wife, and at least one of the daughters, married... ..The plaintiffs then gave in evidence the records of an ejectment, No. 138, May Term, 1834. James Thompson and Margaret, his wife, late Margaret Emerick, in right of said Margaret, George BAUDER and Catherine, his wife, late Catherine EMERICK, vs. David Zeluff and Robert Hilands, and called the late James Merrill, Esquire, who said that he had brought "this suit at the instance of David Thorburn, who showed me a power of attorney, which he took away with him again. I never knew the man before. He said he lived in Canada." They also offered letters from Thorburn from Canada, post-marked Lewistown, which were rejected. This ejectment was non-prossed under the rules." I am hoping something additional may surface to identify this George Bauder and help to determine if this George Bauder is mine. The time frame would be right. If anyone has further interest or information that connects with this BAUDER or EMERICK family, please contact me. Thank you. Virginia Jones Arnold, MD

    1. [PA-Perry] Emigrants Ages on Passanger Lists
    2. Barbara
    3. A very interesting point about ages of immigrants is made at this website: http://www.palproject.org/ne/1753elis.htm "Ages In general, most of the families were pretty accurate in their reporting of the ages of their children. In some cases the ages reported on the different passenger lists varied. The differences in age between the two lists seem to be classified under three categories. First, there were those who probably weren't sure of their exact ages and reported their ages a little differently when asked at different times. Second, since one list was made about June 1753 and the second list was made about November 1753, many of the children had birthdays and are listed as a year older or 1/2 year older on the second list from the first. Third, apparently some of the families realized that if they could underestimate the ages of their children, they could save a lot of money on the passage. This third category seems to be the most interesting. Apparently Zacharias Neubert was the first to realize that he could save a lot of money by underestimating the ages of his children. This family had four children. Following are the ages of these children as reported and how old they actuality were based on the children's christening records: Child Reported Actual Age Appolonia 13 19 J. Christoph 11 15 Johannes 7 13 A. Catharina 3 1/2 abt 10 When these are considered by the age bracketing for cost on the passage to America was 4-13 and under 4, it is obvious that the family manipulated their children's ages to save 11 1/4 Pistole. Apparently Zacharias Neubert was the only one to realize that he could do this trick to save some money when the first list was made in Rotterdam. Apparently he shared this finding with others and on arrival a few other families with children who were listed by their actual ages in Rotterdam and were younger on arrival in New England. Following is a list of the children that fit in this category followed by their actual age first (and most are as reported or close to what was reported in Rotterdam). The second number is the age they were reported on the second list, on arrival in Broad Bay. Names Johann Philip Bornheimer 16 13 Godtfried Bornheimer 13 10 Anna Maria Bornheimer 10 8 Anna Margaretha Georg 15 13 Johannes Martin 17 13 Elisabeth Hein 4 3 This is quite interesting, remembering that being 13 or under meant half price and being under 4 meant free passage."

    3. Dear Janet, My cousin, Doug Reisinger, recently published a genealogy on the Reisinger Family. This book lists some 200+ Jacob's marring into the 'REISINGER' family, not 'Resinger'. I confirmed the 1830 marriage of Susan Reisinger to Nicholas Jacobs, b. 20-NOV-1809 in Roseburg, Perry Co. (son of Peter Jacobs and Elizabeth Rice), occupation: Farmer & Blacksmith, d. 8 JULY 1877, buried: Buffalo Cem, Saville, Perry Co. I think Doug is in his third or perhaps fouth publication of the book. Last I heard, he was still selling it for $25. His research is dependable and very well done. You might want to contact Doug, who lives in Harrisburg, PA and see if he still has any Reisinger Family genealogy books left. 2. Hello David: I am a subscriber to ancestry.com, and am occasionally moved to help people out whose stories intrigue me. In searching all of surname Cox in Pennsylvania with keyword "Perry" I found only two!: 1840 census, Perry County, Greeenwood Township: Lewis Cox, age 30-40, wife, age 20-30, no children 1850 census, Perry County, Oliver Township: John Cox, age 45, no occupation listed, born Ireland. Wife: Rebecca, age 42, born PA Children: Mary 15, John 12, Joseph 8, Harry 5, David 3, and Melinda 6/12. All children born PA. John Cox also appears on the 1840 census for Oliver Township, but I did not open that up. I assume that it is the same person. My guess is that Lewis and John are brothers who came from Ireland and married on the "late" side. Son John of John appears to be the right age to have married and had Hayes. I could find no reference to Cox in Perry PA after 1850. Perhaps John followed Lewis who moved prior to 1850? Do you know what state they moved to? From the 1920 IL census, it appears that Hayes married and lived in Kansas from at least 1895-1902. Kathy

    1. [PA-Perry] Billy Sunday - I have photos!
    2. Janice A. Frank
    3. This is an amazing coincidence. I don't know how much of this I have told on this list before, but I come from a long line of packrats, one line in particular. This summer I came into possession of yet another suitcasefull of stuff, mostly family photographs, that mostly belonged originally to my greatgrandmother Rosetta Elizabeth LUPHER GILSON TAYLOR OSBORN 1851-1929 of Crawford Co, PA. (Three husbands, and she outlived them all. I come from the second one). Included among these are four postcard photos of Billy Sunday, in quite good shape, all marked Copyright 1908; he looks to be about 35-40 I guess. Now Rosetta did have Perry County ancestry (she was a LUPFER descendant) but I doubt that she even knew it; her branch of the family had been in Venango and Crawford Counties since shortly after the Revolution. I assume she kept them because she was a fan of Billy's. I suppose they were given out at the services he held or something like that. Another odd thing is, I am actually connected to the York Co Sundays (Sonntag originally) - are they the same family? My connection to them has nothing to do with greatgrandmother Rosetta's line, it's a whole other subject that I will omit from here. Anyway, i have been going through this stuff and gradually putting family pictures that I can identify (some of them are not identified at all, and some have names on the back but I don't know who they are or how, if at all, they connect. Some are probably just friends) on my website. But I really don't want Billy Sunday on my website, not my sort of thing. So if anyone would like copies of these, please contact me privately and I will scan them in the next day or two and send you .jpg attachments. 3. I just joined, and I quickly confess that I really don't understand "RootsWeb." But I hope to gain understanding as I proceed. My maternal GF, Hayes H. COX is something of a mystery. His parents, said to be John and Matilda (REED) died when he was relatively young. So not a lot of history has been handed down. Family lore has it that Hayes was born in/around Duncannon, 2 Dec. 1870 or 1872. Hayes had at least one elder sister, Laura. I've found a John/Matilda REED in 1850 Armagh Tnship., Mifflin County Census, (p. 172). Census shows no children, and Matilda is 35, too old to have had Hayes when she was 57/59 years old. (I realize that enumerators made errors, but that's all Ihave to go on right now.) Hayes ended up in Kansas as a young man, where I've picked him up. Census shows his parents and he were all born in Pa. But his Pennsylvania time is a real mystery. If anyone reading this has any suggestions or knows anything about COX/REED, I'd be most grateful to know. I'm 61, and live in Chicago. I'm very much of a neophyte in genealogy. I'd LOVE to solve the mystery of my grandfather's parents, etc., and would appreciate any help anyonel could provide. Yours truly, David Salyers [email protected]

    3. I don't know how far you have gotten in Perry County. I would be happy to share any information I have. My great grandfather William Willis moved to New Bloomfield from Shippensburg in 1867 and died in New Bloomfield in 1889. I am trying to see if there is a connection between his grandfather, Abner Willis, blacksmith of Allen Twp, Cumberland County who died c. 1805 and members of the Willis/Bull family of Perry County. Unfortunately, I have not yet identified the correct pre-Perry County Willis line. A typewritten "record of the ancestors of Grace Bull", copied at The Perry Historians, states that Grace was born April 3, 1790. She was baptized October 15, 1792 at St. James Church, Lancaster, Pa. She married Samuel Willis of Pennsylvania Twp., Perry Co., Pa., who was born October 25, 1788, son of Isaac Willis... 3. My uncle Sam Kiser who was very old but lived in Liverpool all his life told me the story of Billy Sundays roots and he said the Sundays would come to Liverpool. He claimed to know Billy Sunday personally and I really beleive they had roots to the Liverpool area. Sadly uncle Sam has passed away, but I would suggest you check with Stanley Snyder from Liverpool. If you would like I would gladly check for you as he is sort of our local expert and was friends with Sam. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 15, 2002 7:53 PM Subject: [PA-Perry] ancestry of Billy Sunday > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Sunday > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/odB.2ACI/499 > > Message Board Post: > > I am interested in the ancestry of the famous evangelist William (Billy) Ashley Sunday. From what I gather, the Perry Co. "sunday" family were originally "Sontag". At least, I have a bunch of Sontags in my ancestry that moved to Perry Co and eventually turned into Sundays. I haven't done very much research at all yet on the Sontag/Sunday Perry Co folks, but I'm pretty sure that a William will pop up. Didn't know there was a famous evangelist named Sunday. - Julie __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! News - Today's headlines http://news.yahoo.com

He married Hannah GRUBB, d/o Abraham and Hannah Hallman GRUBB in Liverpool, PA in 1848. The couple continued living in the area until about 1857 when they moved to Ogle Co., IL. In spite of the existence of numerous HAMAKER's in Perry County both then and now, I have not been able to find a record of Adam HAMAKER's parents or siblings. I am desperate for any clue!
