DOANE in June 1954. With the Bible is a handwritten page explaining how in 1800 Daniel DOANE arrived in Windham Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, at that time a wilderness with only one or two settlers. It goes on to tell about the relatives who owned and worked the DOANE Farm. The Bible also contains handwritten Holy Matrimony page of this couple's marriage, other marriages, births, and a very detailed Deaths page. It also has several loose articles such as newspaper clippings mentioning DOANE relatives and a Birth Registration for Paul Doane BENJAMIN, dated 4 January 1925 and naming Claude Earl BENJAMIN as father and Dessie I. DOANE as mother (born in Windham Twp. Bradford Co., Pa.) Original Bible purchase receipt dated 1914. An original Certificate of Marriage uniting Nathan CAITLIN (?) and Dessie BENJAMIN on 2 July 1935. There are several references to the BENJAMIN name in this book. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1770136809 o My neighbor was getting rid of a lot of old books, and inside one was a postcard (written in pencil) dated 29 July 1944. It was sent to Melba LUKENS, E. State Street, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, by her mother, who was visiting Washington, D.C. The salutation was "Dear Melba and Mac" (or possibly Mae). Melba's mother asks if Father is eating right. I would love to see this postcard find its rightful home, so if you know Melba or her family, please let me know. Please use "Melba" as the subject of your reply. Sharon Brearey [email protected]

No sign of George Potter who married Catherine Emerick unless Catherine , #49/49 is the widow of George. These documents were posted some time ago on this site. They would seem to refer to several of the above families: Last Will & Testament of Jacob BAIR Senior, Perry Co. Pa. At an Orphans Court held at Bloomfield in and for said county on the 4th. day of August A.D. 1862, Before the Hon. James H. Graham, president judge and his associates of the same court. That they are the seven of the ten children of Jacob Bair, late of Buffalo Township, Perry County, dec'd. That the other three children are Peter Bair, Elizabeth intermarried with George Albright and Catharine Boyd intermarried with Joseph Boyd, the former resides in Perry County, the latter in the state of Ohio (Darke County) that the said Jacob Bair died having first made his last Will and Testament dated the 22nd. day of December 1851, which was duty proven before the Register of Perry County on the 30th. day of December 1851. That the Execuator of said Will and Testament, Jacob Buck has rented said farm to Peter Bair and gives him 2/3 of all raised upon the farm such as grain. That said Peter Bair has been using said farm for upwards of six years. That said farm through the management control of Peter Bair is becomming considerable worse, that said Peter Bair has cut chestnut posts and rails and sold them off of the farm, hauls off hay & straw from the farm and sells the same cuts and uses green timber off the place for firewood. The buildings are in a state of delapidation and decay. There are no improvements made. 1. Re: [PA-Perry] John Harmen Potter b. 1823 & Julia Ann Maxwell b. 1845
    2. Hi: I punched Potter with Keyword Mifflin into Ancestry.com census and came up with 3 names. Two, George and Joseph, were in Mifflin County in 1850, and the ages didn't jive for them to be anything. The third was much more interesting: 1850 PA Census, Lycoming County, Mifflin Township, pg. 295, H67, F67 Robert Potter 29 Blacksmith Born PA Catharine Potter 28 born PA Mary Potter 22 born PA John Potter 18 Blacksmith, born PA William Stinger 7, In school, born PA Seems like a family of brothers and sisters, so I figured the parents were deceased. I would check 1840 for Lycoming County Potters, but first would check 1850 for other Lycoming County Potters. Here is what I found: Two, George (age 33) and Joseph (age 3), in Clinton Township, don't fit unless George, a farmer, is a brother of Robert. The third is more interesting: 1850 PA Census, Lycoming County, Anthony Township, pg. 194 William Potter 66 laborer born PA Sarah Potter 60 born PA Sophia 35 born PA Isaac Stinger 4/12, born PA Jacob Latch 60 no occupation worth 2000 born PA (brother of Sarah?) Could William and Sarah have given smithy to children and moved in with brother-in-law whose wife may have recently passed away and Jacob was ill? Everything is very neat here, except the age of John Potter. Could his birthdate have been transcribed wrong? (1832 instead of 1823?). Good luck, Kathy

    3. Carolyn: I have been trying to locate some distinctive evidence that may tie my POTTER/BADER family tree to George Christoph Bader(died a 1767), but have come up empty so far. I do not have any marriage record or dates that concur with the reference to George Bauder and Catharine Emerick marriage from Annals of the Buffalo Valley. I have just started to look into that. There was some information at The Perry Historians in the POTTER family file among the Lenig papers. Lenig seemed to be connecting this POTTER lineage to Georg Bader, who he noted probably was from Union Co, PA, settled near Berry Mtn., east end Bucks Valley. He had a son Jacob Bauder/Potter. There is a Jacob Potter, Sr. and a Jacob Potter, Jr., both on the 1830 Buffalo Twp., Perry County Census. This Jacob Potter, Sr. is the one who Harry Lenig's notes follow as the son of Georg Bader. I cannot defend or deny this information either. We also have noted : HH Hain Hist of Perry Co., PA Pg 933-934 BUFFALO TOWNSHIP (history of) "When the new county of Perry came into existence, in 1820, the assessment list of the township of Buffalo was as follows, Watts and Howe Townships still part of the township: (among those listed in the following order are)... George Bauder, 85 acres; Jacob Bauder (blacksmith); John Bare, 40 acres; Jacob Bauder (weaver), 14 acres..." I believe these Bauder's are my Potter's. The only other Potter's I find in the area are the English who were part of the General James Potter family. Best regards, Virginia Jones Arnold, MD Researching surnames: BAIR, BADER, CASSATT, DEVEREAUX, DOYLE, FIES, GALLAGHER, KENNEDY, McDONOUGH, POTTER, RYAN, SCOUT, SHAFFER, STEPHEN, UNDERKOFFLER, WALD, WALT, WHISTLER, WHITCOMB, ZIMMERMAN, AND ZERBE

    1. [PA-Perry] Is genealogy just a foolish hobby?
    2. Michael O Reck
    3. Is genealogy just a foolish hobby? I would argue that it is not. I think each of us is linked, in some mysterious dance, with past generations. It helps to know about our past because in each of our histories are stories and events that are deeply inspiring. By knowing our history we see how the values and ideals that our families have fought for are similar or different from our own. Our ancestor's stories of success interconnect with our own lives. We can learn also from the stories of the tragic mistakes, of their dreams gone awry. We can at times even see their mistakes repeated in our own lives. So like the author of Matthew's Gospel, I think that the study of our family history can be much more than just a hobby. Because each of us is the product of our parents and grandparents as we learn more about the people that came before us, we learn more about ourselves. In a constantly changing world the digging for the roots is, in the end, the quest for a stable, core identity. All modern Americans should understand.
