    3. Hi, given the state of Rootsweb I can’t find the archive to see if there have been any replies. My feeling is that within the trade only a vatman or perhaps coucher would call themselves a papermaker, but ‘down the pub’ they might all do so. I think manufacturer is reasonable for an employer, but they might also call themselves a Master, especially during wage negotiations. Hope this helps, Colin — Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies. 2. Can anybody enlighten on the description – paper maker? Was this a blanket term for anyone employed at a paper mill (18th C) or was this a particular job such as Vatman, Mechanic, Coucher, Sizer etc. My ancestor was described as ‘paper maker’ until he bought his own mill in the 1790.s after which he became a ‘paper manufacturer.’

    1. [PAPER-MILLS-MAKERS] Tramps, Routes?
    2. Pauline, My papermakers were in evidence form 1772 in Northumberland where they remained for about 6 years. Their next sighting was in Shropshire (Few hundred miles away?). They often got messages by word of mouth about another Mill looking for workers or in some cases the owner of the mill where they currently worked might have a mill in a different county. They didn’t just ‘Tramp’ randomly in the hope of finding work, they usually had a location in mind. In many case too the whole family, wife and children accompanied them, no easy task at that period. Stage coaches would have been used or if there was a water link then the canals too would have been helpful. You could try looking at the various routes. Greta

    3. Mine were at Roth’s Mills in Markinch, one of the brothers was a manager at the paper mill in Leslie, one came here to get rich on esprit (spelling ?) grass paper only to find the area was moving to wood pulp from rags instead of grass. He eventually managed a Reading Pa. mill. One brother went to England and the last brother I can not find. The census may list him will have to construct a different search method just name and birth date does not work. However, having a number of publicity marks by both Portals and T H Saunders [who they absorbed] I’d say that the latter are a great deal more interesting. While there I was using ultrasonics as micro machining method on ceramic and for welding fine electrical connections . I shared the ultrasonic welding information with Charles as an improved method for attaching the the fine wire structures used in their paper making process .
