Hello Listers - Below is an overview of my Italian family, with a note regarding my "brick wall". Anyone with information regarding Giuseppe Papa, born 1946.10.10 in Sant'Angelo di Cetraro please contact me. Thanks for taking the time to look at this information. Cissi Cesternino ****** >From the archives of vital records of Cosenza: Michele Papa, son of Fedele Papa & Mariangela Paletta, married 1820.04.13 Emmanuele Di Cianni (a/k/a Emmanuela Cianni), daughter of Mauro Di Cianni & Maria Salamone They lived in Sant'Angelo di Cetraro, Cosenza, Calabria. Michele & Emmanuele had (at least) the following ten children I've identified via the vital records archive of Cosenza: DOB: 1. 1821.03.06: Mariangela 2. 1823.11.11 Benedetto 3. 1825.12.30: Cecilia 4. 1828.04.27 Pasquale 5. 1831.09.16 Maria Rosaria 6. 1833.02.11 Maria Rosaria 7. 1836.09.05 Filippo 8. 1839.03.03 Michelina 9. 1841.03.21 Mariangiola 10. 1846.10.10 Giuseppe Child 10: Giuseppe Papa I believe this is my great grandfather. If so, his son was Benedetto Papa, born 1880.01.25 (my grandfather) who was also known in the U.S.A. as Benjamin Papas. I believe there was at least one other child, Cristina. I cannot locate any marriage or other information for Giuseppe Papa and his family or Benedetto/Benjamin's immigration. This is the information I'm trying to verify. The most definitive information I have is regarding the family of Benedetto's great Aunt, Child 8 above: Michelina Papa married Pietro Maria Santoro, born 1839.09.15, son of Vincenzo Santoro & Teresa Di Cianni. Michelina and Pietro had two children: a. 1879.04.05 Rosa (Rose) Santoro died April, 1974 (from Social Security records) married Michele Gregori, born 1879.10.17 in Cosenza. When Michel Gregori came to the U.S., he went to stay with his cousin, Leopoldo Paletta; b. 1873.03.23 Vincenzo Santoro Rose (Santoro) Gregori & her brother, Vincenzo Santoro & their families were listed as all living together in the same house on Sand Lane, Staten Island in the 1920 U.S. Census. I've listed the info below. If you believe you are related to these families, I can send a copy of the census sheet. Sometimes it's easier to see the inter-familial relationships on the actual census listing. Line 62 Gregori, Michel Age 39 " 63 Gregori, Rose Age 39 Children: " 64 Joseph - age 19 " 65 Lewis - age 15 " 66 Albert - age 14 " 67 Alice - age 09 " 68 Julia - age 06 " 69 Edward - age 04 " 70 Vincenzo Santoro Age 45 (he was Rose Gregori's brother wife " 71 Filimina (possibly Paletta) Age 40 " 72 Ameal (Arneal or Amiel) Arrino Age 22 wife " 73 Michelina Age 20 (this Michelina should be the daughter of Vincenzo & Filimina Santoro) " 74 Child of Ameal Arrino & Michelina - Anglina - Age 3 " 75 Michelina Santoro, Age 84 listed as "Mother-in-Law". As Michel Gregori was listed first as the "Head" of this household, this listing should be Michelina (Papa) Santoro, Michel Gregori's mother-in-law., the mother of Rose Gregori & Vincenzo Santoro and, also, the great Aunt of Benedetto Papa, also known as Benjamin Papas.
Benedetto Papa was born January 25, 1880 in: Region of Calabria, Province of Consenza (south of Naples) Comune of Cetraro, in a little village of San'Angelo di Cetraro. Also known in America as Benjamin Papas, Benedetto died April 14, 1923 in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York. Benedetto was married to Julia Teeling; they had one son. I know little of Benedetto's family other than the following: Benedetto had a sister, Christina (Cristina), born in San'Angleo. She was alive & living in NYC at the time of his death in 1923. Benedetto's paternal aunt, Michelina Papa, married Pietro Santoro. Their daughter, Rosa, born April 9, 1879 in San'Angelo, was Benedetto's cousin. Rosa married a Mr. Gregori and lived in Staten Island as late as the 1960's. One of her children was Edward. I'm trying to find Benedetto's parents, birth record, immigration data or any other information, as well as connect with any existing relatives.. Other than the foregoing, I only know that we are related to the Paletta family. I have various photos of Benedetto, Rosa (Santoro) Gregori and her son, Edward Gregori, to help with family identification. Any information would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Cissi Cesternino
