    3. Donna, For this response I'm including the ListServs that have been affected by your interesting comments on the town of Pillow and other counties involved in the discussion. It's easy for a subscriber to delete any duplicated messages received. I've driven through Pillow a fair number of times in my younger days and always had to be careful not to blink when I knew I was coming up on it!(:D) We lived in Point Twp. across the river from Sunbury, and us "Dutchified" people spoke of Pillow, Mandata, Malta and Dalmatia as being "Dowen pack uff Suntpury." My PENNSYLVANIA LINE p. 267 agrees that Pillow is in Mifflin Twp., Dauphin Co., but my AAA highway map clearly shows Pillow located north of the Dauphin-Northumberland Co. line, and that would place it in Lower Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland Co. Did AAA make a mistake? To resolve the conflict I looked up Pillow on the Topozone map, which portrays topographical features and boundary lines if you want to know about such things. The map at http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=40.64083&lon=-76.80278 clearly shows Pillow folded within a "half-circle loop" of the Mahantango Creek, virtually surrounded by steep mountain sides, except for the inlet and the outlet of the creek. Quite an unusual geological feature and worth looking at! I don't think there's another place quite like it, anywhere. When one looks at the surrounding topographical features, one can easily see why Pillow did not become a larger town! Its boundaries were set by nature. Since Pillow lies south of Mahantango Creek, the dividing line between the two counties, it must lie in Dauphin Co. The people who drew the AAA map made the mistake when they drew a straight line south of Pillow for the county line instead of circling around the north side of Pillow the way the creek does! Just a lesson on how to study topography when studying ancestral areas. It's enlightening.
