I was born in Sunbury and raised nearby. Have been in Sunbury's Hotel Edison many times. The story they tell tourists is that this hotel is the first large commercially oriented building in the world that received electrical lighting. I never heard the story that Sunbury was the "first electric-lighted town," even though my home was in that area for fifty-some years. I wonder if the story of "whole-town" lighting might have grown by exaggeration from the early electrification of the Hotel Edison. If anyone can provide me a reference to an historical account of Sunbury city's electrical street lighting, I would appreciate it. Nelson R. Carmel - First Town with Electric Street lights Hi, This message is connected with genealogy in that my grandfather, Samuel Weary, worked with Thomas Edison in the setup and follow-thru of the first street lights in Pennsylvania which, family history says, happened in the town of Mt. Carmel. I notice that an internet search indicates that Sunbury was the first electric-lighted town. Which is correct? Thanks, Elida of Dixie
